Lindsay Maxwell had once been happy in her marriage until a twisted turn of events ruined it all for her. She can't say, but lately, she has noticed her husband, Engel, has become distant and less affectionate; their marriage has been a cold place in their empty mansion. All she wants is to be separated from him. Engel Gunther, first of the Gunther sons with an alias of the devil himself, when his beloved wife turns her back on him, Engel is forced to show a side of him he has withheld for long, his greed getting the best of him just to keep Lindsay with him. To him, he was protecting his most prized possession; to her, he was hurting her.

I love my husband; I mean, there was a time when I did. At times I would get excited over the bare minimum he would do, get excited over him preparing breakfast in bed, and bring home my favorite flowers he would pick up from the florist shop on his way home from work. He was my everything. I have grown to understand that not all good things last, as the sweeter they get, the faster they turn sour. Our relationship was like that, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth that wouldn't go away. My stomach twisted into knots every time I laid my eyes on him. It was exhausting. I had to let go and move on, even though it hurt like hell. So many times I had thought of calling it quits, but I just couldn't; he is a Gunther. I reminded myself I needed the awakening. "Till the wheels fall off." I laugh at such fake promises. Certainly, it had fallen off at the very moment I said โI do.โ I just never paid attention and deceived myself about how things would get better, convincing myself Engel, my husband, still loved me. Engel can be very vocal when it comes to showing affection, but lately, he just never minded at all. I am starting to feel maybe somebody else has his attention, which is fine; all I want is to be freed. "Mrs. Gunther, Sir Engel has returned home. Would you like me to set the table for dinner?" Zainab, the house help, asked while I was stepping out of the room in my nightwear. "Let it be; he probably ate at the Gunther family house. I am not sure he will bother having his meal tonight, I told her, and Zainab nodded. My chest tightened as I held back the feeling burning inside of me; the fact I knew this and pretended not to mind hurt me, but not anymore. I went downstairs to see him; after all, I should welcome him home. Engel wasn't there in the living room. "I thought you said my husband is back," I asked Zainab as she was heading to her room. "He is. Sir Engel has gone to the study," Zainab informed. My eyes went to the study; someone had turned on the light. I heaved a heavy sigh. How important work must be for him to ignore his wife, couldnโt even tell me he was home. I mean, am I not important enough? I knocked on the door twice before opening it; he didnโt quite say that I should, but I did anyway. "I heard you were home," I managed to smile at him; it was all performative to show that I was still very much in love with him even though it was simply just a lie. Engel raised his head from what he was doing as he placed the file to the side and took off his glasses. "I came home not too long ago. I thought you would be asleep, which is why I didn't bother to disturb you." "It is 9:45," I told the time through the grandfather clock; it was his blatant excuse that made me think he must think I had nothing to do, which is why I slept through the whole day and even this early. I needed the disturbance; I needed to know if he still wanted me. "Indeed," Engel responded, not picking up my subtle jab at him. "You should be asleep, especially since tomorrow you will be paying a visit to the doctor," Oh, this is what it wasโฆ my monthly visit to check if I ever would get pregnant for the first son of the Gunther family. I have been pressured for the past two years since we tied the knot, not by Engel himself but by his family, especially his mother. Engel never spoke up for me about the constant abuse I received from them, and they never stopped to remind me that I was from nothing and the least I could do was provide the Gunthers their first grandson. I told Engel of this, and although he made an effort, it just wasnโt enough, as it always continues, whether it was through occasional dinners or random visits. For the doctorโs visit, it was done at the end of each month. This time around I had gone earlier since I hadnโt seen my monthly flow; it was better to get my heart broken as soon as possible. I wasnโt pregnant. It breaks me to know I will be called a barren woman by these obnoxious privileged Gunthers who feel they have the right to belittle everybody they come across, all because they are rich and own half of Bavaria; as crazy as that sounds, they do. Donโt even get me started on the extended families too; those are even worse. "If you want me to come with you to see the doctorโ" "That wonโt be necessary," I cut him off, my tone firm; it startled him, as he probably had never had me talk back to him before. "Why?" Engel has never followed me to any of the doctorโs visits. Why all of a sudden was he bothered about it? I should have stayed in the room and not bothered about seeing him this evening; now I justโฆ I just maybe will cry myself to sleep. "How long are you planning on staying up?" I changed the topic; I didnโt want this to linger for much longer than it should. "Throughout the night," Engel responded. "Throughout the night?" I was deeply concerned; he had already worked the day off, and now he was pulling up an all-nighter. "I think you should slow down and get some rest," I suggested, even though my input wonโt matter much to him in his life unless his family speaks to him. I was his family, but I guess Engel was stuck in the family he knew of for several years, and I was still a stranger to him. "The vineyard caught fire last week, so I am trying to see if our accounts are right; we might have incurred lots of losses this season," Engel replied, "I will not be able to rest tonight." I didnโt even know the vineyard caught on fire in the first place; he never bothered letting me know. "Is there anything I can bring for you? Maybe coffee?" "No, I already had enough." I nodded, "I will head to bed now." I turned to leave. I was almost reaching out for the door when he called, "Lindsay." Engel's voice was soft and calm, a perfect tone for the night. I turned to answer him, "Do you need anything?" Engel was hesitant; he shook his head. "Nothing, just that I love you," he smiled. Four years ago, my heart would have beat so fast at this; now, it didnโt even flutter, "I love you too." I spat out those empty words that were.LindsayThere was only one way out of this situation: to ignore them. There was no need to stay and listen to a single word they had to say. โSister-in-law,โ Conrad called out in a menacing tone, setting the stage for the impending, โHow have you been?โI opted not to engage and simply headed home.โLindsay,โ Engel called my name softly, leaving me caught between dealing with both of them. Lazarus lingered near Conrad, whispering something in his ear. โCould we have a moment? I wonโt take up much of your time,โ Engel said when I refused to turn to him.โEngel is going to lose himself again,โ I heard Lazarus murmur.I turned my head and asked, almost coldly, โWhat is it you want to say?โ Engel seemed unfazed by my tone.โThis isnโt a good place; we should talk in my car,โ he suggested. I shook my head in refusal. โIโm too busy; I need to head home.โโIโll drive you, and then we can talk,โ Engel offered.โI donโt need your help at all, Engel. We can't keep going back and forth on this,โ
LindsayโWhere are you off to?โ I immediately asked Alessia as she came down the stairs. โHere and there,โ she replied, not providing a straightforward answer. I decided not to press her, as it wasnโt a big deal; today was a day off for both of us to rest.โWhy, what is it?โ Alessia leaned on the counter, placing her new Balmain bag on it to relieve herself of the weight. I noticed but said nothing about where she had gotten the money, considering we were both struggling financially and scrambling to pay off debts.I couldnโt respond right away because I was preoccupied with arranging the order I had received that morning.โYou did all this by yourself?โ Alessia asked, clearly shocked by how quickly I had completed it, especially since we had just gotten the order an hour ago.โYes, someone refused to help,โ I replied.โI thought you were going to turn it down,โ Alessia said, her face falling, reflecting regret.โAlessia, have you forgotten that we need money to move out of here? If n
EngelโSir, are you sure you want nothing?โ Mark asked for assurance, and I shook my head in refusal. โLindsayโs is an excellent spot for great food; I recommend it.โMark remained bent on speaking good of Lindsayโs restaurant, โMaybe next time, Mark, I am not hungry,โ I admitted though I know I said I wanted to eat but I seemed to have lost the appetite having to see Lindsay again. It bothered me to see her. I never knew Lindsay knew how to cook. I know it is silly because I met her first working at her fatherโs pub but it differed from her.I understood how she had built herself up; she didnโt need me like Conrad and the rest of my brothers claimed. She would run back to me after a couple of months, but she never did. Meanwhile, here she was the entire time.โMark, please take us to the other site; Conrad is over there waiting,โ I said as I took one last look at the restaurant and forced my eyes to peer through the tinted glass door.It didnโt sit right with me, though I tried to sh
LindsayโMummy, are we going to the park now?โ Jack whined as we reached the pawnshop. โWe will,โ I told him, as well as Jordan and Jake, who have both been silent since I cautioned them against fighting with each other.โHello,โ I greeted the lady at the pawnshop.โHi, welcome. How may I help you?โ She asked with a smile. โI need to have these sold off; how much do you think I could get from it?โ I asked, placing all the jewelry I had gotten when I was married to Engel, apart from the designer bags and clothes I had before. This was the only thing I had left. The lady examined me as she continuously shook her head. โDo you have the receipt?โ she asked. โReceipt?โ I was utterly surprised, as it didnโt cross my mind that it would be necessary. The lady eyed me suspiciously, wondering if I had stolen the limited-edition items.โI donโt have the receipts. Is there another way we can go about it? Is it just everything that canโt be sold without a receipt?โ I questioned, sounding desperate
LindsayFive Years LaterโBusiness mogul, Engel GuntherโโI turned the television off immediately before I could hear the news.โAre you still bothered by him?โ Alessia asked, after serving table six and placing the next order on the counter. โWho?โ I asked, pretending like I didnโt know what was up.โYou know who,โ Alessia replied before taking the next order to their table and coming back again while I was cleaning up the kitchen. I wiped the sweat off my face with my face towel as the place was hot. โI think we need to get the other oven fixed; we canโt simply be working on this one.โโYou have been working very hard, Lindsay; how about you take it easy?โ Alessia suggested it, given how much I have been working nonstop.I was even looking for an extra job to add to this restaurant that I run, and I couldnโt seem to find one that would accept me because of my lack of experience and a criterion that stated that I was too old.โAlessia, you canโt request this from me,โ I said, pacing
LindsayEngel agreed to my request, and this morning, he asked me to come down for breakfast. Since yesterday, I havenโt seen him because I assume he was busy with work; thatโs alright.I went to the dining room, which was filled with every one of his family members, only to be received in the coldest of receptions. They blankly stared at me as Berenice murmured, โWhat is she doing here? This was supposed to be a family breakfast.โI ignored this as though I didnโt hear the rudeness in her tone as Engel smiled my way before coming to pull out a chair for me. โGood morning,โ he said. I forced out a smile; I felt the weight of displeasure with me.It was soon hitting me I couldnโt give this family another chance, as each chance offered was a means to belittle me every time.โHow was your night?โ Engel asked, and I nodded my head slowly while answering, โIt was alright; I didnโt see you yesterday after you left for work.โโI came, but you were already asleep. I left a message for you on
