Engel

"How many times am I going to keep telling you, Conrad, we can’t let the Andersons get their way on us; it is a stupid idea to even side with them." I spoke over the phone and didn't even hide my disapproval of the way Conrad, my brother, runs things. I was heading to the vineyard today before moving on from that.

The losses were massive, but I wasn’t going to allow that to be the reason we didn’t look towards a way forward.

Didn’t have a night's rest and was still very much wide awake.

"Are you coming over to the house? There are things I would like to discuss with you," Conrad said over the phone. I looked at my wristwatch; I didn’t have time to come around in the morning. "Tell Lazarus I will see him in the evening today," I instructed.

"Good morning, sir," Matthew, my driver, greeted. "Good morning, how is the family?" I asked swiftly.

"Like you would like to know that," Conrad chimed in as he mocked. He was right; I didn’t even want to know how Matthew's family was doing; it was no business of mine.

"They are fine, sir; my wife recently gave birth," Matthew announced suddenly, and I was shocked. I never got to know if he was married or if his wife was pregnant; I thought he wasn’t even married in the first place.

“Congratulations! Was it a boy or a girl?” I inquire, sounding concerned; how much I loved children and the joy they bring regardless of the mess they make.

As Matthew answered, “A girl,” my heart swelled. "Uhm, Matthew, after dropping me off at the vineyard, do go to your wife. I am sure it is best you stay with her and your little girl," I considered.

"Thank you, sir,"

I entered the car, and before Matthew could drive off, I was able to catch a glimpse of my wife. I kissed her forehead while she was soundly asleep; I am sure she didn't even notice my presence as I tried not to wake her up.

Lindsay is excellently beautiful, sometimes I wonder how she had chosen to love and end up with me. It was never for my money; I constantly told myself this; if not, she would not have agreed to sign the prenuptial agreement offered to her by my father before he passed a year later.

I love her immensely; she loves me too.

I understand the weight of not being able to bear a child was taking a toll on our marriage, but I wasn’t going to allow it to ruin us.

Matthew drove to the vineyard and left as I said that he should. I did a quick tour and spoke to the farmers around, ensuring that they would be duly paid for their work this season. Though how the fire had started in the first place was to be investigated, I didn't plan on holding anybody accountable yet.

After this I drove myself to the Ivory Creek Hotel and Spa; it was one of many hotels that belonged to my family in Bavaria, of which I now run by myself. Funny how the world works because I wasn’t expecting to see her there.

My ex. A few months if we didn’t break up, and I would have proposed.

"Engel," Rhea called with an alluring smile plastered on her lips as she stood at the receptionist while I was about to pass. "Fancy seeing you here," Rhea walked close to me; she looked beside me. "No bodyguards?"

I didn't fancy the need for security even though I knew it was very much needed; unlike me, my brothers pretty much used it, and the main family house was heavily guarded.

"It has been a long time," I said, holding out my hand.

"Such formalities," she chuckled, "You haven’t changed a single bit, Engel, a gentleman till the end." Rhea shook my hand. "It is nice to see you after ten long years. I heard you got married."

It was broadcast all over the news, both locally and internationally; how wasn't she going to know?

"And so did you," I implied, even though I wasn’t sure if she did. It has been ten years since we last saw each other. I am pretty sure she moved on with her life, as did I.

Rhea narrowly looked away; she changed the course of the discussion again. "I heard your wife is the simple, home-loving wife, a very large difference from the party lover that I am, wild as you once described me,"

I didn’t want her to bring up our past; those were those times. We were much younger, gullible, and had no worries to think of; now is different.

"Rhea, it was nice to meet you again. I am very busy; please excuse me." I ended the conversation swiftly as I moved away before she could speak up.

I never came to understand why she wanted to leave me; there was no detailed explanation, just a text stating that she no longer wanted to continue.

If ever such a thing were to happen again, it would break me into a million pieces. It took me years to struggle out of the hole I covered myself in, and had it not been for meeting Lindsay, I never thought I would be able to survive it.

Lindsay, Lindsay, Lindsay, she is all I think of every time that I wake, sleep, eat, and miss our touch on each other’s skin; no one compares to her.

I am aware of how taking over my father's properties and businesses has set our relationship back; still, I was confident Lindsay hasn't stopped loving me, that bright smile I return home to, and the happiness it brings me.

No matter how stressful it will be to return home, I ensure that I do just to see her, even if she is asleep.

I am in love with my wife.

LindsayThere was only one way out of this situation: to ignore them. There was no need to stay and listen to a single word they had to say. “Sister-in-law,” Conrad called out in a menacing tone, setting the stage for the impending, “How have you been?”I opted not to engage and simply headed home.“Lindsay,” Engel called my name softly, leaving me caught between dealing with both of them. Lazarus lingered near Conrad, whispering something in his ear. “Could we have a moment? I won’t take up much of your time,” Engel said when I refused to turn to him.“Engel is going to lose himself again,” I heard Lazarus murmur.I turned my head and asked, almost coldly, “What is it you want to say?” Engel seemed unfazed by my tone.“This isn’t a good place; we should talk in my car,” he suggested. I shook my head in refusal. “I’m too busy; I need to head home.”“I’ll drive you, and then we can talk,” Engel offered.“I don’t need your help at all, Engel. We can't keep going back and forth on this,”

Lindsay“Where are you off to?” I immediately asked Alessia as she came down the stairs. “Here and there,” she replied, not providing a straightforward answer. I decided not to press her, as it wasn’t a big deal; today was a day off for both of us to rest.“Why, what is it?” Alessia leaned on the counter, placing her new Balmain bag on it to relieve herself of the weight. I noticed but said nothing about where she had gotten the money, considering we were both struggling financially and scrambling to pay off debts.I couldn’t respond right away because I was preoccupied with arranging the order I had received that morning.“You did all this by yourself?” Alessia asked, clearly shocked by how quickly I had completed it, especially since we had just gotten the order an hour ago.“Yes, someone refused to help,” I replied.“I thought you were going to turn it down,” Alessia said, her face falling, reflecting regret.“Alessia, have you forgotten that we need money to move out of here? If n

Engel“Sir, are you sure you want nothing?” Mark asked for assurance, and I shook my head in refusal. “Lindsay’s is an excellent spot for great food; I recommend it.”Mark remained bent on speaking good of Lindsay’s restaurant, “Maybe next time, Mark, I am not hungry,” I admitted though I know I said I wanted to eat but I seemed to have lost the appetite having to see Lindsay again. It bothered me to see her. I never knew Lindsay knew how to cook. I know it is silly because I met her first working at her father’s pub but it differed from her.I understood how she had built herself up; she didn’t need me like Conrad and the rest of my brothers claimed. She would run back to me after a couple of months, but she never did. Meanwhile, here she was the entire time.“Mark, please take us to the other site; Conrad is over there waiting,” I said as I took one last look at the restaurant and forced my eyes to peer through the tinted glass door.It didn’t sit right with me, though I tried to sh

Lindsay“Mummy, are we going to the park now?” Jack whined as we reached the pawnshop. “We will,” I told him, as well as Jordan and Jake, who have both been silent since I cautioned them against fighting with each other.“Hello,” I greeted the lady at the pawnshop.“Hi, welcome. How may I help you?” She asked with a smile. “I need to have these sold off; how much do you think I could get from it?” I asked, placing all the jewelry I had gotten when I was married to Engel, apart from the designer bags and clothes I had before. This was the only thing I had left. The lady examined me as she continuously shook her head. “Do you have the receipt?” she asked. “Receipt?” I was utterly surprised, as it didn’t cross my mind that it would be necessary. The lady eyed me suspiciously, wondering if I had stolen the limited-edition items.“I don’t have the receipts. Is there another way we can go about it? Is it just everything that can’t be sold without a receipt?” I questioned, sounding desperate

LindsayFive Years Later“Business mogul, Engel Gunther—“I turned the television off immediately before I could hear the news.“Are you still bothered by him?” Alessia asked, after serving table six and placing the next order on the counter. “Who?” I asked, pretending like I didn’t know what was up.“You know who,” Alessia replied before taking the next order to their table and coming back again while I was cleaning up the kitchen. I wiped the sweat off my face with my face towel as the place was hot. “I think we need to get the other oven fixed; we can’t simply be working on this one.”“You have been working very hard, Lindsay; how about you take it easy?” Alessia suggested it, given how much I have been working nonstop.I was even looking for an extra job to add to this restaurant that I run, and I couldn’t seem to find one that would accept me because of my lack of experience and a criterion that stated that I was too old.“Alessia, you can’t request this from me,” I said, pacing

LindsayEngel agreed to my request, and this morning, he asked me to come down for breakfast. Since yesterday, I haven’t seen him because I assume he was busy with work; that’s alright.I went to the dining room, which was filled with every one of his family members, only to be received in the coldest of receptions. They blankly stared at me as Berenice murmured, “What is she doing here? This was supposed to be a family breakfast.”I ignored this as though I didn’t hear the rudeness in her tone as Engel smiled my way before coming to pull out a chair for me. “Good morning,” he said. I forced out a smile; I felt the weight of displeasure with me.It was soon hitting me I couldn’t give this family another chance, as each chance offered was a means to belittle me every time.“How was your night?” Engel asked, and I nodded my head slowly while answering, “It was alright; I didn’t see you yesterday after you left for work.”“I came, but you were already asleep. I left a message for you on
