Chapter 0003

Winter was Gerald's last girlfriend whom he dated the longest. While they were dating, Winter had always stuck to Gerald like glue, kissing and hugging him at every opportunity. It killed Desiree with jealousy every time she saw them together because she'd silently been in love with Gerald since she was a kid, but Gerald had never once looked at her.

But all that changed when Winter was run over by a car. She didn't die, but the accident was so severe that it caused a type of life-threatening brain damage that only one surgeon called Doctor Mathew Hussley was known to have successfully treated.

Gerald had been ridden with guilt because he'd broken up with Winter a few days before the accident. He'd located Doctor Hussley only to be told that the doctor couldn't treat Winter because he already had a lot of patients on his waiting list.

In his agitation, Gerald ended up offending the Doctor by telling him that since money was all doctors cared about, he would give the doctor any amount for the doctor to skip the patients on his waiting list in order to treat Winter.

The doctor had kicked him out of the office, refusing to treat Winter. The more time passed, the more Winter's condition got more dangerous, leaving Gerald devastated with guilt.

Seeing him so distraught, Desiree had sworn to do anything to change Doctor Hussley's mind. She soon discovered that Doctor Hussley was a very distant relative. But even with that, it took a lot of relentless begging before he finally agreed to perform the surgery on Winter.

At that time, Desiree's only intention was to save Winter's life to make Gerald calmer, but when Gerald came to her after the surgery saying that he was very grateful to her and would grant her one wish no matter what it was since he didn't like to owe anyone, she'd asked for the one thing she'd been dreaming about since she was a kid.

To become his wife.

It'd only been a wish; she hadn't expected him to agree. To her shock, Gerald agreed even though he made it abundantly clear that he didn't love her. Winter slipped into a coma even after the surgery, and the doctor said she might never wake up again. Despite this, Gerald didn't change his mind. That was how Desiree and Gerald ended up getting married.

"Winter," Desiree gasped in shock as she stared at the woman in front of her. "Winter, you're awake."

One year ago, Doctor Hussley had been so sure that Winter's chances of ever waking up again were very slim, so to say Desiree was shocked to see her awake and healthy was an understatement.

But her shock soon gave way to pleasure as she stepped closer to the bed. "This is a miracle, Winter. When did you wake up? How are you feeling? Oh, I'm so glad to see you awake."

However, despite Desiree's genuine concern, Winter only stared at her coldly and said hostilely, "Don't be such a hypocrite, Desiree."

Desiree froze, her smile dimming a bit. "Hypocrite?"

"Don't pretend to be happy that you've seen me awake. I know you were always wishing that I would die in the coma. You don't care about my health," Winter sneered.

Desiree nearly stumbled back at the venom coming from the other woman. "What are you talking about, Winter? I would never wish death on you or anyone else. And of course, I care about your health. I brought you to the hospital after your accident, remember? And I also did everything I could to get Doctor Hussley to agree to operate on you."

Instead of gratitude, Winter laughed mockingly, "I guess I'm supposed to be grateful to you, right? You didn't do all that to save my life. The only reason why you saved me was to make Gerald marry you because you loved him even when he and I were still together. You took advantage of the fact that I couldn't fight for what was mine and stole Gerald from me."

"You and Gerald were never in a serious relationship, Winter," Desiree pointed out. "Plus, he broke up with you before your accident."

Hatred burned in Winter's eyes as she said, "Oh, so now you're trying to justify stealing my man? How shameless of you! But karma is such a bitch. Gerald is going to be mine again soon."

Desiree's heart skipped a beat. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Just then, outside the room, a very familiar voice was saying, "Of course, Mr. Kranski. I'll send my assistant to sort out the final details."

Before Desiree knew what was happening, Winter suddenly grabbed her by the hand, pulling her on top of her. And then she began screaming.

"Please stop. You're hurting me. What have I ever done to you? Please don't hurt me."

"What the hell?" Desiree demanded, flabbergasted by what Winter was doing.

Suddenly, the door to the hospital room burst open. "What the hell is going on here?" Gerald demanded as he ran into the room.

"Gerald, please save me. She wants to kill me," Winter whimpered.

Desiree was still reeling with shock from what was going on when Gerald suddenly pushed her away from Winter, causing her to fall hard into a couch sitting in a corner of the room.

"Are you okay?" Gerald asked as he sat beside Winter on the bed, his eyes filled with concern. When he turned to look at Desiree, his eyes were filled with coldness as he demanded,

“What the hell are you doing here, Desiree?”
