Chapter 6

Warren froze. Then, he threw a cold look in Evelyn's direction.

"If you want to die, then by all means, do it."

A mocking look appeared on Evelyn's face. "Why do you think I haven't been through that? What if I told you I'd just lost 2000 ml of blood? Would you still force me to donate blood to her?"

"Evelyn, stop all this nonsense. The maximum blood loss during your period is typically around 60 ml. Next time, try thinking up a more plausible excuse."

Evelyn smiled bitterly. She'd already made it so clear to him, yet he still didn't believe her.

If he was concerned about her a bit more, he'd continue asking her about it. And if he understood her a little more, he would also know that she was never reluctant to help other people.

But this was the reality that showed if he truly loved her or not.

Clara's tiny scratch sent him into such a frenzy, and yet, she'd been through a dangerous miscarriage and even went under the knife for it, but he never realized.

Their conversation left Evelyn with the utmost pain in her heart.

Warren drove them back to the hospital. Just as he was dragging her to the ward, Evelyn suddenly caught sight of that man's figure at the entrance to the ward. She was so shocked that she stood rooted in place.

Before she passed out that day, she'd seen a vague figure coming to help her. She also heard a man's gentle voice in her ear, calling out to her.

She'd opened her eyes the best she could, and it was this man whom she'd seen the other day.

She could remember him very clearly. She had gripped his arms tightly as she uttered feebly, "P-Please, save me…"

By the time she woke up, Jazzie told her that a handsome young man in glasses had brought her to the hospital.

Evelyn laughed bitterly at herself.

She walked over to Chet and asked him softly, "Are you Clara's brother?"

Chet nodded slightly and said in a gentle voice, "Ms. Jefferson, if there's anything wrong with your body, I can—"

Evelyn closed her eyes solemnly. Why was fate being so cruel to her?

The person she'd been meaning to return the favor was none other than Clara's older brother.

Evelyn smiled bitterly and said, "Mr. Sullivan, can we please speak in private?"

Just as she was about to bring Chet to the stairs next to the ward, Warren grabbed her wrist and said, "Why do you need to talk to him? Just say what you want to say with me around!"

Evelyn laughed coldly. "You want me to say this in front of you? You're not worthy of this information."

"Evelyn Jefferson, since when have you been so unreasonable?"

"Am I the one being unreasonable? Or are you the one being inhumane now?"

Before Warren could respond, Evelyn shook herself free from his grasp. She then brought Chet to the stairway under Warren's angry eyes.

Evelyn's face was pale. She lifted her head and looked at Chet's handsome face. "I haven't had the chance to thank you properly the other day for saving my life. I never thought that the opportunity would present itself so quickly.

"Don't worry. I will donate my blood to your sister. But I have a request in return. I hope you'll keep it a secret that you saved me the other day."

Chet frowned. His voice was still gentle as he asked, "The baby was Warren's, wasn't it?"

Evelyn smiled calmly at him. "It doesn't matter who the baby belonged to anymore because it's gone. I just don't want that incident to affect my decision."

She didn't know how Warren would react if he learned about the news. But she wanted to prevent any further drama from happening. She just wanted to leave Warren as quickly as possible.

Chet's eyes turned dark. He felt as if he could see his mother in Evelyn. He asked hesitatingly, "But you lost a lot of blood, and it's only been a few days since then. Are you sure that your body can handle it?"

Evelyn chuckled bitterly and said, "That's my problem. I just want to repay your kindness. After this, we won't owe each other favors anymore."

"You don't have to do that. I'm not that kind of person. If your body can't handle it, I won't force you to do it."

"I don't like owing favors to anyone, Mr. Sullivan, especially those related to Clara. I hope you'll remember my one request as well."

After Evelyn was done talking, she nodded slightly at Chet before walking over to the nurse waiting by the side. "Let's go."

"Evelyn!" Warren grabbed her and pulled her back, his fierce eyes boring into her. "Why did you go looking for Chet? What is it you're hiding from me?"

Evelyn looked at him coldly and chuckled. "Why? Are you worried that I'd find another sugar daddy under your eyes?

"Don't worry. Even if I were desperate, I still wouldn't go after your friends."

Then, she flung Warren's hand off her and turned on her back, following the nurse into a separate room.

Warren didn't know why he felt as if his heart was being crushed. He glared at Evelyn's retreating back and slowly clenched his fists.

20 minutes later, Evelyn exited the ward next door. Her face was deathly pale. Even her usually pink lips had gone completely white. The light in her eyes was gone, and she staggered as she walked.

She resorted to holding herself up by clinging to the walls as she made her way toward the corridor outside.

Warren ran after her, bending down to scoop her up from her feet. There was a complex emotion riddled in his eyes. "I'll bring you somewhere to rest."

However, before he could take a single step, he heard the nurse behind him saying, "Mr. Larkin, Ms. Sullivan is very unstable now and is crying and screaming for you. Please go and take a look at her."

Evelyn looked at Warren, her expression devoid of any emotion. A haunting, self-deprecating smile hung on her lips.

When the nurse drew her blood earlier, she'd seen dark spots in her vision and came dangerously close to passing out.

She'd forced herself to walk out of the room normally. And when she saw Warren rushing toward her, a tiny spark of hope ignited in her chest.

She wanted to tell him that she couldn't stand it anymore. She wanted him to take her away.

But after hearing what the nurse said, she couldn't help laughing at her naivety. Warren would never choose her over Clara. That was a fact.

As expected, Warren only contemplated for a short while before setting Evelyn back on her feet. "Wait here," he told her.

Evelyn looked calm as Warren set her back down on the ground before rushing into Clara's ward. Then, she hung her head to hide her teary eyes.

"Ms. Jefferson, let me send you home."

Chet approached her to help, but she pushed him away.

She stared at Chet stubbornly and said coldly, "Mr. Sullivan, I just cleared my debts with you. I don't want to owe you another favor!"

Then, she held on to the walls as she slowly made her way out of the hospital.

She could feel her legs shaking and her vision turning blurry. She also felt as if she'd used up every single ounce of strength left in her.

However, she stubbornly made her way down the stairs.

She wanted to get away from Warren and the Sullivans.

But before she could go any farther, her body gave up on her, and she crumpled to the ground as her world turned black.

Just as Evelyn thought she was going to smash her face against the floor, someone shot out his hand around her waist and caught her.

She heard a man anxiously calling her name. "Evelyn!"
