The sharp smell of chlorine hit me and my stomach rolled. Even the soft lily scent of my own shampoo made me queasy now. I took a slow breath, trying to settle it, and kept walking toward room twelve—the gynecology department. Finding out I was pregnant had knocked the air out of me, but I was still clinging to the tiny hope that the tests were wrong. I wasn’t going to believe it until a doctor said the words out loud. I moved down the hallway, turned left, and spotted the sign from a distance. ROOM 12. Two women were already waiting. I was relieved it wasn’t packed—sometimes the line stretched way longer. One had dark curly hair and stood right in front of the door, arms folded, clutching a file to her chest. The other sat on the metal bench with a nice round baby bump. I dropped into the seat beside her and gave a small smile when she smiled at me. She kept glancing my way, curious, and it made me shift a little. “Hi!” she said brightly, her cheeks a soft pink. She looked like she was glowing from the inside. “Hello.” “Which month are you?” she asked, resting her hands on her belly. I wasn’t even sure I was pregnant yet. “I’m just here for a confirmation,” I told her with an awkward little grin. Her eyebrows lifted and she nodded like she got it. “And you?” I asked, nodding toward her bump. “Seven months,” she answered, pride lighting up her whole face. Seeing her like that tugged at something in my chest. She was genuinely happy about it, and why wouldn’t she be? She probably had a solid family, a husband who loved her—the simple silver ring on her left hand said enough. “Your boyfriend didn’t come with you?” she asked out of nowhere. I tensed up instantly. Just hearing the word boyfriend made my shoulders tighten. I didn’t really want to answer, but I shook my head anyway. “Why? Is he busy?” she pressed, like it was her business. I turned it back on her. “Where’s your husband? He didn’t come?” “He ran to the store for vanilla ice cream,” she said, calm and easy. The woman with the dark curls was called in when the couple inside finished. They walked out looking thrilled, smiling at everyone as they passed. “You know, I got pregnant with Anya when I was only eighteen,” the woman beside me said suddenly. It caught me off guard. “My boyfriend dumped me the second he heard. My parents kicked me out—they were so ashamed. Life got really hard. I even booked an abortion because I wanted to get rid of the whole mess.” She paused, eyes softening as she looked down at her belly. “But something stopped me. It felt like Anya was talking to me herself.” She gave a quiet laugh. “I thought I was making a huge mistake, but it turned out to be the best decision I ever made.” She turned back to me. I reached over and gave her hand a gentle squeeze. I hadn’t known any of that, but parts of her story felt way too close to mine. Her words left me unsure. Before I walked into the hospital I’d already decided that if I was pregnant, I’d get an abortion. Now I wasn’t so sure anymore. “So if you’re feeling lost or can’t decide,” she added softly, “just listen to your heart. It always knows the answer, even when you don’t.” She was basically telling me to think twice. “You talk a lot,” I teased, and she laughed. A few minutes later the curly-haired woman came out and it was the pregnant woman’s turn. She glanced down the hall one last time, like she was hoping someone would show up, then headed in alone. Her crocs squeaked on the tile floor. “You’ll get a call tomorrow morning for your results,” Dr. Gregory Sutton told me. “Make sure you take these supplements. The nausea will probably stick around, so have them right after you eat.” He scribbled the names on a notepad, tore the sheet off, and handed it over. I was still in the hospital gown. He’d run two tests—one urine, one blood. The urine test came back positive, just like the two I’d done at home. Three positives weren’t a coincidence. I was pregnant. The doctor said he was eighty-nine percent sure. Once the blood work came in tomorrow, the last bit of doubt would be gone. “What about… the abortion procedure?” I asked, the words sticking a little. Dr. Sutton looked up over his big octagonal glasses and stopped writing. “Once we’re certain, we can talk about that. It’s safe within the first twelve weeks. After that it gets riskier.” “Can it happen this week?” I blurted out, fingers twisting together in my lap. “There’s a good chance I’m pregnant.” “Sure. Just make the appointment and we’ll handle everything here.” I nodded, staring down at my knotted hands. It was probably the safest choice. The smartest one. There was no way I could look after a baby right now. I could barely look after myself. I changed back into my clothes and left the hospital. The whole trip had drained me. I didn’t have the energy for the rest of my classes. Back in my dorm I flopped onto my single bed and groaned as my body ached. My stomach growled, but the thought of getting up and walking to the café felt impossible. That’s when my phone rang. I checked the screen before answering. “Hey,” I said, voice flat. “Hey! You don’t have plans tonight, right?” Clara asked, her cheerful tone usually enough to lift anyone up. Not today. I felt like I was underwater. “Not really. Why?” “I scored free tickets to the Aphrodite Show!” she squealed so loud I had to pull the phone away. “We’ve been dying to see it forever, Elara! We’re finally going!” If I weren’t drowning in this pregnancy mess, I would’ve been just as excited. But I wasn’t. “Sorry, Clara. I can’t tonight. I don’t feel great.” “Whoa, what’s wrong? Are you sick?” “Something like that…” I mumbled. I couldn’t bring myself to spill it. Clara still had no idea I was pregnant. I hadn’t told a soul. “Elara, don’t mess with me. I can hear it in your voice—there’s more you’re not saying.” She knew me too well. “I just don’t feel like going, okay? Sorry I’m ruining your plans.” “Nope. You’re coming. If you don’t, I’m showing up at your dorm and dragging you out myself.” I let out a small laugh and rolled onto my side. “Clara…” I hesitated. I wasn’t sure why I couldn’t tell her yet, but it didn’t feel right. “You’re such a pain in the ass,” I teased instead. “Exactly! So be ready at seven. I’ll pick you up.” I rolled my eyes even though she couldn’t see. “Fine.” “That’s my girl,” she said, sounding happy. “Gotta run. See you!” “Yeah, see you.” I tossed the phone aside and draped my arm over my eyes. Maybe being around her would help. As I closed my eyes, the pregnant woman’s words floated back through my head. “If you’re unable to make a choice or a decision, listen to your heart. It always has the answer to your unrequited question.” Did my heart already know what I wanted? Did it?My heartbeat quickened the second our eyes met. A strange flutter spread through my stomach, and it felt almost wrong to keep looking at him like I was crossing some invisible line. I wanted to turn away, but his gaze held me there.I swirled the half-full glass of white wine in my hand, unable to stop watching him.“What’s he doing here?” I asked Lily.Like most of the women in the room, Lily was completely captivated by Adrian Blackwood.“He’s one of the sponsors. A big name in Garnet,” she said dreamily.I already knew that, but it still didn’t explain why he was at this party.“But why is he here? Sponsors weren’t even invited.”“Who knows? I’m just happy I got to see him. He’s so handsome… My heart can’t handle it.”I sighed, finished off my wine in one gulp, and set the glass on the bar.The party had been thrown together at the last minute to welcome Adrian for his huge investment in the movie. I hadn’t packed anything fancy since I thought this trip was strictly work.My phone
Victor came striding toward me with a deep scowl etched across his face. Lily shifted nervously at my side. “So you’re here. How?” he demanded, hands shoved deep into his khaki pants.“Same way you are,” I shot back.“Where’s that guy?” he asked, glancing around as if he expected the intimidating stranger to pop out any second. “Who was he anyway? You know him?”“Why do you care so much about my business?” I replied, crossing my arms over my chest. One of his eyebrows shot up. The usual smug smirk was nowhere to be seen his face actually looked serious for once.“I’m not concerned, Elara Vale,” he said in that irritating tone of his. “Just figured you must’ve done something for him to pull you away like that. Who is he? Your sugar daddy or something?”“He is not my sugar daddy!”Victor sneered. “I think he is. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit.”Talking to him always made my blood boil. He was the biggest asshole I’d ever met. I huffed, spun on my heel, and walked away without another word
I’d never stepped foot inside a private jet before, but here I was, sitting in Adrian’s. I still couldn’t quite believe how I’d ended up here. After that possessive confession in the car, my knees had turned to jelly and I didn’t have the strength to say no when he offered to fly me to the Maldives with him.I kept worrying about what Zara would think. Even though Adrian had promised he’d already spoken to her, the panic wouldn’t leave me alone.I tried closing my eyes to get some sleep, but I could feel Adrian watching me the whole time. I shifted in my seat and pressed my lips together. A soft chuckle came from beside me, so I finally gave in and opened my eyes.“What?” I asked.“You’re cute,” he said with a quiet laugh, his eyes warm with affection. My cheeks heated up instantly, and I tried to hide it. This man could make me blush with barely any effort.“Stop staring at me and let me sleep,” I muttered, shooting him a look. His lips twitched in amusement as he closed the laptop o
He smirked that dangerous, devilish smile that always turned my knees to jelly. Everything suddenly made sense. Adrian was the boss who’d asked to see me, and this serious-looking man had to be one of his bodyguards.“You called for me… why?” I asked.Adrian leaned closer in his seat. For a split second I thought he was about to kiss me, but he was only pulling the door I’d left open shut.Heat flooded my cheeks. Mortified, I looked away.He settled back and said, “Because I wanted to see you, Moonshine.”Every time he called me that, something fluttered inside my chest and stirred up a whole storm of feelings.“I-I was clear last time,” I said quickly. “We shouldn’t be meeting like this. There can’t be anything between—”He didn’t let me finish. His mouth crashed into mine.My eyes flew open and my toes curled as his warm lips claimed me. His arm slid around my back, pulling me closer while he took full control of the kiss. I tried to resist, but it was pointless. A soft moan escaped
I froze, completely thrown off.“What?”That was the last thing I’d expected to hear.None of it made any sense.I glanced over at Victor. That smug little smirk was plastered on his face as he winked at me.Asshole.“He can’t stand me. Why would he say that?” I asked, still baffled that he’d told Zara not to replace me.Zara just shrugged, like it was nothing.“You should be grateful. Whatever his reasons are, at least you get to keep the job, right?”“Yeah… but—”“Get back to work, Elara. And don’t forget what I told you,” she said, already walking off.My shoulders slumped.I really didn’t want to work with him at all.The idiot had made me his makeup artist just to mess with me and keep me on edge.I shot him a glare while he lounged there, clearly loving every second of my discomfort. There was nothing I could do about it, so I took a deep breath and headed over.Vivian hadn’t shown up yet, which was a small mercy no snide comments to deal with right away.He was sprawled in the
ELARAPeople have no clue how much their dirty looks and hushed whispers can destroy someone. I felt every single one of them. Thanks to Adrian’s surprise visit and Vivian’s explosive outburst, I’d become the hottest topic of gossip throughout the entire company. Now everyone saw me as the shameless homewrecker who tried to steal Vivian’s man the so-called power couple the media couldn’t stop talking about.I kept wondering how long it would take for them to get bored and move on to the next scandal. When I found out Adrian had shown up right after I left him, I was hit with a mix of shock, curiosity, and nerves. Stacy wasn’t sure exactly what happened between him and Vivian, but she figured he’d come to clear the air. She was the only one in the whole place who actually believed me and didn’t look at me like I was guilty. I couldn’t even begin to tell her how grateful I was for that.I kept my chin up and ignored the murmurs as I walked through the foyer. Zara had called me earlier w
I hadn’t kept up with any of my high school friends except for Clara Bennett. It still caught me off guard sometimes, how we’d stayed close through all the hard times. When her parents split and she fell apart senior year, I never left her side. And when my own parents kicked me out six years ago a
**SIX YEARS LATER**“It looks gorgeous!” Freya Evergreen beamed as she admired her reflection in the mirror. The smoky eyes, sculpted cheekbones, and soft nude lipstick gave her that expensive, polished glow that always turned heads. She turned to me with a bright smile. “I love what you did! If yo
“…what were you doing at the hospital? What abortion?” Mom’s voice was shaking so hard it filled my ear.“Mom, calm down. I’ll explain everything, I promise. I’ll tell you tonight when I come over for dinner.”“You really know how to give me a heart attack. Fine. Just come early,” she sighed.“Bye,
I watched the kids tearing around the field, chasing the football like it was the most important thing in the world. Their shouts and laughs filled the air, and something about it warmed me from the inside. Just seeing their huge grins and hearing all that pure joy made me smile without even trying
