LOGIN“Did you get anything from the scouts you put on her?” I ask Anders.
“Not yet, I thought I would call them now so we could all hear the report together.” He pulls out his phone, flicking through the contacts and hitting call, putting it on speaker before placing it on my desk. The call rings twice before it’s picked up.
“Yes Boss?” the voice on the other end asks in a hushed tone.
“Hey Rodrigues, I have Alpha Zales and Gamma Colin here with me, we wanted a status report from you on Willow Doyle.” Anders prompts his scout, a smile in his voice. I watch Colin open a notebook, his pen poised to take any notes.
“Sure thing, Morning Alpha Zale, Gamma Colin. I’m about to swap shifts with Darian who’s just arrived so with your permission I’ll include him in the debrief as well.” Rodrigues requests formally, but I know if I wasn’t here, he would have cut to the chase faster.
“Permission granted.” I reply quickly to speed things along.
“Willow left the offices of Drakon Designs at approximately 5:40 yesterday afternoon. There was a moment I thought she sensed me as she went to car, she started searching the car park, and I was watching from across the road, she didn’t detect me but I think it’s best to keep a distance when tailing her. She drove directly home to a residence on Bakkar Road. There was an unidentified male waiting for her on her porch stairs. She seemed to know him well and didn’t show any signs of distress, so I didn’t intervene. The male is a police officer judging by the squad card he left in later that night at approximately 9:45 pm. During the time that he was there a pizza was delivered, I couldn’t see into the house properly but the few glimpses I managed, they sat on the couch eating the pizza and drinking beer. At about 10pm the downstairs lights went out, a light then turned on in the second story front left window. It was on for approximately 20 minutes before it went out. There was no visible activity until 7am the next morning when Willow exited the house and drove to the office. She arrived at approximately 7:45 and has not left since.”
“I’m assuming you got photos of the male for us to run a search on him as well?” I query, hoping he did, and I can find out who this unidentified male is that is circling her. For safety reasons of course.
“I did Alpha, I’ll text them to Beta Anders with my write up. Is there anything else you need?”
“That’s all thanks Rodrigues; finish your hand over with Darian and then get home to your mate and get some rest.” Anders ends the call and looks at me – waiting.
“I thought you said she was single.” I look pointedly at Colin and his brows raise in surprise.
“Out of all the information we just went through…you’re first thought is if she’s single. Zale my man, don’t tell me you’ve finally gone and got a crush on a she-wolf.” Anders teases, a smug smirk on his face as he looks between Colin and me. Why is it that me hearing about a male sitting on the stairs of her house, eating pizza and drinking beer with her has me so on edge? The second that Rodrigues mentioned him I wanted to get up, march over the Willow’s office and demand to know who he was – not exactly sane behaviour for me.
“What I actually said, was that she was single as far as we knew and has never been married. She might have a boyfriend; the databases I searched won’t be able to tell me that though they only record what’s registered and boyfriends are not on the list. There is no male outside her father listed in connection to her that I have found.” Colin explains that same twinkle in his eyes that Anders has, which I deliberately ignore.
“Well as much as we now know, we still don’t know enough. We need to get closer to Willow Doyle and her father – We need an in so winning the Drakon Designs account is now crucial. I don’t care if we have to sign them up at a loss – close on the account.” I order them both, giving them the leeway needed to get the contract signed so we have easy access to her for the next few years – something tells me she isn’t going to fold into line. Colin and Anders nod there understanding, but stay seated, giving each other meaningful looks – more than likely deciding who is going to break whatever news they have for me. “What is it – spit it out you two, I don’t have time for you to rock paper scissor it through your link.”
“Ah…it’s about the rogue epidemic. We have another two cases to add to the list.” Anders starts, his voice soft and sad.
For the last twenty years a sickness has been plaguing wolves across the region, slowly eating away at their clan and pack bonds until they forget who they are, where they are form and are unable to shift back to their human form – essentially becoming wolves and rogues, but without the inherent rogue violent tendencies.
No one can figure out where the illness came from, how it spread, or how to cure it. It doesn’t have any markers other then the bond deteriorations and breaks – nothing to predict where it will hit or who it will hit. No pattern that we can find to try and stop it or reverse it. We have our best healers working to find out more, but it’s been fruitless so far.
It's starting to feel hopeless.
“Where?” I prompt, from the look on his face this is worse news than just a wolf succumbing to the rogue condition.
“Cedar Falls, and it’s not where that worries us, but the who.” Colin joins, his face is a mask of pain and fear. I wait patiently in silence for them to continue, seeing that they need to compose themselves, my anxiety is starting to rise.
“It’s an eleven-year-old boy, only been shifting for three months. He’s the youngest case we have to date and that would be enough, but it gets worse. The second case is a newly mated female, and she’s four months pregnant.” Anders words drop into the silence of the room with a deafening boom even though he whispered.
This is the worst news we could have – a pregnant female and child. The first cases of their kind. So far there hasn’t been a case under twenty, and never a pregnant female. I sit back in my chair with an exhausted thump, all energy sucked out of me.
How can we fight this when it keeps shifting and changing the way it is?
Anders and Sandy unpack the trolley, taking plates of food and placing them down in front of everyone before pouring wine and retaking their own seats. Sandy’s eyebrows raise and she smirks when Ander steps deftly around her to claim the chair open beside Thomas. On the plate in front of me is a perfectly cooked steak, some sort of cheesy potato stack and a side of almond sprinkled broccolini. It looks delicious and I am hungry, but my nerves are still making my stomach churn a little, so I decide to take a sip of the wine instead.Dad’s voice has stopped and there is silence in the room again – slightly less awkward this time – and we all take some time to eat while Alpha Gerald and Luna Seraphina processes what they have just heard.“So, you never actually saw Juniper at all, not even a flash of her or her wolf?” Seraphina’s soft voice trembles as she poses the question, she already knows the answer to.“I’m afraid not. All I heard was Willow crying and saw lying there covered by th
Willow After the chaos Zale created during my call from Finn, which I can’t spend too much time thinking about now for fear of embarrassing myself further. I guess everyone knows we are together, Zale made sure of that with his possessive display. Now everyone has settled down into awkward spurts of conversation – for the most part I have been silent. It’s been a tense twenty minutes that we have been sitting here in the restaurant waiting and I can’t tell if my need to pee is from anxiety or because I have drunk two glasses of water. Zale has been holding my hand, his thumb stroking the back of it in comfort and trying to keep the conversation going by asking Dad and Thomas about their work. It helped to start off with but the longer we wait the harder it is for me to keep my nerves in check.“You’re getting extra jumpy Wills, need a break?” Dad checks with me and look down and realise my leg has been tapping the floor like a drum and my fingers drumming on the table. I decide to gi
Florence, the owner of the restaurant has a large round table for us, settings all ready and two wine buckets on the side with bottles chilling in them, along with a small drinks table as well. We have used her restaurant more than once for confidential or council meetings, so she is used to the set up and need for absolute privacy now.“Where should we sit?” Wills inquires, standing awkwardly by the table, her hand running across the back of a chair, nerves showing again – and all I want to do is give her a hug. But I’m not sure if that will help or if that is what she actually needs.“You can sit anywhere you like, but I would recommend facing the door, that way you won’t have to turn when they enter and it’s the safest position in the room.” I move around and pull a seat out for her, letting Conall and Thomas decide where to sit. They move to the right of her, leaving the seat on the left empty for me to take. After offering drinks, I pour us all water and then sit down, taking her
“Dad and Thomas will be out in a few minutes.” She says and then leans against the car beside me.“I got your email today – did you have to give up your project because of me?” I ask, trying to make conversation but also hoping I’m wrong. I don’t want to be a barrier for her work, that will not help our situation at all.“I did actually, but only because it’s a conflict of interest – plus Tristan is ready for an opportunity like this so it’s not a huge loss.” She gives me a soft smile when I frown at her answer.“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to affect your work – I don’t want to hold you back.” I say as I take her hand and give it a comforting squeeze.“Don’t worry about it, my boss Draven was completely understanding.” She suddenly turns to me, her eyes bright. “Which reminds me actually, I need to do some research on other…well other non – wolfen beings.”“Other non-wolfen beings?” I ask, baffled, not exactly sure what she means.“Mmm hmm, you know, like other shifters or fairies or vam
“Oh, my goddess, she looks just like Juni.” She utters and sobs again, leaning into my chest as I fold her into my arms holding her as she breaks down and trying not to breakdown with her too. I purr a little to give her extra comfort, to help calm her down as she rides through the range of emotions she’s feeling. It’s been so incredibly hard, not have a single word. To not know if Juniper’s ok or not, to feel our bond to her strained but intact, to know she’s out there still but be unable to pull on that tether to find her. And now, when I was starting to think we would never find her we are gifted with this – a granddaughter – a connection.“Sera, there’s more. Look closely at her eyes.” I direct and she pulls back sniffing loudly as she zooms in on the photo of Willow to see her mismatched eyes.“She’s a Toniar.” She states, looking back at Solomon holding the case secured in her hands, her mind connecting the dots. “You brought the book, didn’t you?”“I did. It’s a good way for us
“I…don’t know…I’m not…sure I’m ready.” Thomas whispers and I see Anders sag with relief and then slowly, tentatively take one of his hands. All of the tension slides away from the hallway and I take two more steps back, keeping out of view as they start to talk properly and Thomas acknowledges their potential mate bond for the first time.“I can work with that – it’s not like we have to get mated tomorrow. We can take it as slow as you need, you can set the pace” He offers, moving even closer and I have to admire his ability to manoeuvre himself into the position he wants without other being aware until he is just there.Sneaky and impressive. “I know this all new and lot to deal with, but we have time to get to know each other and for you to learn about wolfen mating. I just need you to talk to me, even if it’s to tell me you need a little alone time - instead of pushing me away.” Anders rubs his hands up and down Thomas’ arms soothingly, holding his gaze until Thomas finally nods a
