Her lips trembled. She slowly raised her hands, terrified of making any sudden movement.

“What are you doing? Why are you pointing that thing at me?” she asked with fear.

“Your ex wants you gone forever from his life. So I'm taking you out of this city.”

Anna stared at him with disbelief.

Jacob? Has Jacob really gone this far?

“Please,” she whispered, tears gathering in her eyes. “I haven't done anything to you. Just let me go. I have a job here. I have somewhere to be.”

“Keep quiet.” he hushed her coldly.

“Please, I'll pay you. Whatever he promised you, I'll give you more. Just let me go.”

The driver laughed. “Save your money. You're not going anywhere.”

Anna's heart pounded painfully against her chest.

Her phone was no longer within reach. The driver had taken it from her when she tried calling Georgia, and she had no idea where he was taking her.

She looked through the window, desperately searching for someone who could help.

Just then, another car approached from the opposite direction.

The driver swerved slightly, and the two vehicles came dangerously close before stopping.

Anna's eyes widened.

Was the other driver involved too?

The man in the taxi cursed under his breath and reached for his gun again.

The driver of the other vehicle stepped out.

He was a tall man dressed in a dark suit, his expression immediately turning sour as he examined the damage to his car.

“Hey! Can't you drive properly?” he shouted, walking towards the taxi. “Are you blind? You almost wrecked my car!”

Anna's breathing became shallow.

Something about that voice sounded familiar.

She slowly turned towards the window, trying to get a better look at the stranger.

And then she recognised him.

Her boss. Damn it! She didn't even know his name, yet she was suddenly praying he would look in her direction.

“Sorry, sir,” the cabbie replied, trying to sound calm. “We're actually in a hurry.”

“Then you should have learned how to drive before getting behind the wheel!” Her boss snapped. “Come out. You're going to pay for the damage you've caused.”

Anna shook her head frantically.

She tried whispering at him, but the window was closed. How was he supposed to hear her?

She quickly rolled it down.

The movement caught her boss's attention.

His gaze shifted towards the back seat, and his eyes met hers.

For a second, he seemed confused.

Anna's lips trembled.

“Please save me,” she whispered.

Her boss's expression changed immediately.

Before he could ask what was happening, the taxi driver jumped out, pulled out his gun, and pointed it at him.

“Come on! Get inside the car!”

Elliot looked at the weapon, then at the man holding it.

“Are you seriously pointing a gun at me?”

“Get inside!”

Instead of obeying, her boss moved forward.

He caught the man's wrist, twisted it sharply, and forced the gun out of his grip. The weapon dropped into his other hand, and he delivered a hard punch that sent the cabbie stumbling backwards.

A struggle followed.

Anna didn't wait to see how it ended.

She quickly opened the door and climbed out, her legs almost giving way beneath her. She hurried to the trunk, opened it, and dragged her suitcase out.

By the time she walked around to the front of the vehicle, the cabbie was already sprawled on the road, groaning in pain in front of the car, holding the gun.

He glanced up when he noticed Anna approaching.

“You? Anna Sinclair?” shocked to see Anna.

Anna stopped.

He raised an eyebrow, looking from her to the taxi and then back at her.

“What are you doing in that car?”

“I was coming…” She hesitated, suddenly unsure of how to explain herself. “Never mind.”

She crouched beside the injured driver and retrieved her phone from his pocket.

Her boss watched her with a puzzled expression.

“The police will be here soon,” he informed her. “What exactly is going on?”

Anna straightened, holding her phone tightly.

She wasn't in the mood to explain anything to a man who barely knew her.Besides, why was he questioning her like she had committed a crime?

“He was supposed to drop me at my friend's place,” she eventually explained. “Then he pulled out a gun and threatened me. Apparently, my ex-husband wants me out of the city.”

Her boss's eyebrows drew together. “Your ex-husband?”

“It's a long story.”

He looked at her suitcase, then at her visibly trembling hands.

“Get inside my car. I'll drop you wherever you need to go.” he said.

Anna barely acknowledged his offer.

She was already dialling Georgia's number.

Thankfully, the call went through.

“Georgia, where are you?” she asked urgently.

“Anna, I'm…”

Anna spotted a familiar car approaching and let out a relieved breath.

“Never mind. I can see you.” She ended the call and looked up.

He was still watching her, his expression unreadable.

“Thank you, sir,” she said quietly.

“It's Elliot. Call me Elliot Hayes.” He gave her a small smirk before turning towards his vehicle.

Anna watched him walk away. What an arrogant man. Even after saving someone's life, he still had to make sure they knew his name.

She rolled her eyes and returned her attention to her belongings.

By the time Georgia pulled up, the police sirens were already approaching.

The words sounded small in the quiet room, but she needed to say them. She didn't deserve to be cheated on. She didn't deserve to be insulted because of her body. She wished she could talk to her mother right now, tell her everything but her number was blocked, even if she goes to Indonesia to find them, they've left the apartment they used to live inside before. She wiped her cheeks and reached for the small book on the drawer. It was a notebook with a brown leather cover, her diary. She hasn't written much in it yet, but tonight she needed somewhere to put everything she couldn't say aloud. She opened to a fresh page, her handbag was in the living room, she went to carry it, picked her pen inside and sat on the bed. For a few seconds, she didn't know where to begin. Then she started writing. Dear Diary, I don't even know how to explain how I feel tonight. Today was supposed to be a good day. I went to work, Mr. Ell

The murmuring among the employees grew louder. “Miss Sinclair, we'd appreciate your cooperation. We can explain everything at the station.” The officer said to Anna. Anna shook her head, taking a small step backwards. “I'm not going anywhere until you tell me what this is about. I just arrived at work, and suddenly there are three police officers waiting around my desk. You can't expect me to follow you without an explanation.” she said. One of the officers exchanged a glance with his colleague before reaching into his pocket. “Your ex-husband, Jacob Williams, filed a complaint against you this morning.” the officer said. Anna's lips parted. “He reported that you assaulted his pregnant partner yesterday and threatened her life.” For several seconds, Anna couldn't speak. Then she let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “I'm sorry, what?” “You heard me, ma'am.” “He's lying!” Anna exclaimed, her voice rising. “I didn't touch that woman! I didn't threaten anybody. Wha
