When I came to I was in the emergency room in the hospital, a couple of concerned doctors around me, all of them with their back to me.
They were talking softly amongst themselves.
“We have to get that fluid drained. It’s putting too much pressure on the spine.” One doctor said.
“I agree, what was it that her mother said that they were doing?” another asked.

I woke the next morning in the bed with no idea how I had gotten there. The sun poured into the room through the open curtains but I had no desire to get up and close them. Instead, I pulled the covers over my head and stayed put. Gwen’s words kept repeating in my head. I thought of ways I could’ve handled it better, or maybe could’ve said something. It seems to me that it was a previous agreement between Miss Preston and Miss Sheldon as to who would take me to school and take me home in the afternoon. My mother was free most afternoons but Miss Preston still insisted on taking me home. On afternoons when my mother was home, a group of my school friends would drive along and we would form a study group at my house. It was easier for me to walk at home than at school. Gwen got me home at around two pm. She helped me into the house to the sitting room and handed me the TV remotes. I lay on the couch and scrolled through a couple of channels until I came across the Discovery ID channel. I watched a couple of episodes of Criminal Investigators before I realised I couldn’t hear anyone in the house. My phone was on the coffee table not too far from me. I sat up carefully and picked it up. There was a couple of messages including one from an unknown number. It read simply“How are you feeling?”
