My mind went completely blank, the background noise of the restaurant fading into a sharp, high pitched buzz.

No. This has to be a joke. A hallucination from sleep deprivation.

But as I stared across the white table cloth, the harsh reality didn’t melt away. Lael didn’t look like a drowned rat anymore. He looked effortlessly handsome, ridiculously expensive, and completely untouchable by the disaster two days ago. The only thing that hadn’t changed was the lethal, and calculating look in his eyes.

“Avery, honey, are you alright?” My mother asked, her hand gently touching my arm, anchoring me. She was looking at me like I had seen a ghost.

“I…I am fine,” I choked out, forcing my eyes away from Lael to look at his dad.

“Richard, this is my daughter, Avery,” my mom introduced proudly, beaming at the man beside Lael. “Avery, this is Richard De La Fontaine. And his son Lael.”

“It’s my pleasure to finally meet you, Avery,” Richard said, standing up fully to offer me a warm genuine handshake. He had a strong build, but unlike his son, his expression was kind. “Your mother hasn’t stopped talking about how brilliant you are.”

“Thank you, Mr. De La Fontaine. It’s nice to meet you.” I managed to say, my voice sounding incredibly small even to my own ears.

“Oh please, call me Richard,”he insisted with a smile before gesturing to the guy next to him. “And this is my son, Lael. I believe you two go the same university?”

I stiffened, my gaze reluctantly sliding over to Lael. He was leaning back in his chair, a glass of water rolling between his fingers.

“Yeah,” I said with a fake, sweet smile plastering on my face. “Who wouldn’t know Lael? He is North Ridge hockey god. Though, from what I have seen around campus, he’s actually much better at scoring off the ice. Especially either the faculty.”

My mom blinked, laughing softly but a little confused. Richard just chuckled, completely missing the loaded insult. “Well, he certainly has a reputation for being focused on his own goals.”

But across the table, Lael entire demeanor shifted. The lazy, amused look vanished instantly. His eyes turned into two pieces of sharp, cutting blue ice.

Suddenly, a heavy dress shoe kicked my shin hard under the table.

“Ow—“ I choked, biting the inside of my cheek to keep from yelping out loud.

I glared at him, but Lael just stared right back, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle was violently ticking. He didn’t even flinch. He just gave me a look so dark and lethal it felt like a physical treat. It was loud and clear: Shut your mouth right now, or I’ll shut it for you.

“Avery, did you say something?” My mom asked, tilting her head as she noticed me grimacing.

“Nothing,” I squeezed out through my teeth, keeping my eyed locked on Lael. “Just….caught my leg on the table. It’s a bit tight under here.”

“Oh, it’s definitely tight,” Lael murmured, his voice low, rough purr that didn’t travel past the white table cloth. He finally took his feet off my shin, but he didn’t stop staring. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. “But Avery is right, Dad. I am always focused on my goals. I never miss a target.”

Before I could even process his creepy arrogant threat, Richard clapped his hands together, looking absolutely thrilled. “That’s what I like to hear! Because with the wedding just around the corner, you two are going to need to work together. Especially with the big move next week.”

My stomach violently flipped. The big move next week?

I blinked looking at Richard back to my mom, my heart suddenly doing a frantic dance against my ribs. “Wait. What big move?”

My mom smiled, a little sheepishly, and squeezed my arm. “Oh, sweetie, I wanted to tell you tonight when we were all together. Richard and I decided there’s no point to wait until after the wedding. His estate has more than enough room for all of us, so we packing up our apartment. We moving in with them next Wednesday.”

The air left my lungs in one sharp gasp.

Moving in? Next week?

I stared at her completely horrified, but I couldn’t say what I was actually thinking because of Richard. I couldn’t just scream, “Hey Mom, we can’t move in with them because your new step-son is a psychotic hockey player who I drenched with freezing water while he was making out with his coach!”

I couldn’t even picture it. Living under the same roof as Lael De La Fontaine? Sharing a hallway with him? Waking up and seeing his arrogant face at breakfast table every single day? It sounded like a literal death sentence.

“Isn’t it wonderful, Avery?” My mom beamed, completely oblivious to the silent panic attack I was having. “You don’t have to worry about your long commute to campus anymore, either. Richard’s place is barely ten minutes away from the university arena.”

“Yeah,” I choked out, the word feeling like sand in my throat. I slowly turned my head to look across the table. “Wonderful.”

  • Don’t Tell Our Parents    A Little Update About the Story ❤️

Hey everyone ❤️ I want to be honest with you about something. I’ve been thinking a lot about the story, and I feel like somewhere along the way, I lost the plot and the direction I originally had in mind. I know I’ve already written a lot, but I don’t want to keep writing just for the sake of updating when I know deep down that the story could be so much better. You, my readers, deserve a story that you can genuinely enjoy and connect with, and I care more about giving you that than simply rushing to finish. I’m also trying to prove my place on this platform and show that my stories are worth reading, so I want to be proud of what I’m putting out there. That’s why I’m considering starting the story again and doing it properly this time. I know starting over may not be what everyone wants, and I completely understand if you’re disappointed. But I hope you’ll trust me enough to give the story another chance. ❤️

My knees felt like water, but Lael’s hands locked around mine with an iron grip, holding me anchored to the marble floor."Twenty minutes, Avery," Lael murmured, his thumbs smoothing over the back of my knuckles in a rhythm that was equal parts comforting and terrifying. "We go upstairs, change into something presentable, and we sit side-by-side in front of that camera. If you hesitate for even a second, my father will smell blood in the water.""What if he asks about the blog?" my voice trembled, raw and barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning. "What if he asks who leaked it?""We accuse Leon," Lael said flatly, his dark eyes flashing with a ruthless edge. "We tell Richard that Leon is trying to sabotage our relationship because he's threatened by us coming together. It's plausible, it fits Leon's bitter personality, and it shifts the spotlight off the 'fake' part of the rumors."I let out a shaky exhale, staring up at him. "You really have an answer for everything, don't

I barely slept that night.Every time I closed my eyes, Lael’s words echoed through the quiet darkness of my bedroom. You’re just as deep in this web as I am, partner. The worst part about him wasn't his arrogance or his maddening ability to manipulate everyone around him—it was how easily he peeled back my layers and pointed out the dark, messy motives I tried so hard to deny. When my alarm finally went off at seven in the morning, I dragged myself out of bed feeling like I’d been hit by a truck. I dressed in simple blue jeans, a soft cream knit sweater, and my usual sneakers, pulling my hair back into a claw clip. I didn't bother putting on much makeup, just enough concealer to hide the dark circles under my hazel eyes.Downstairs, the estate was bathed in early morning sunlight. Lael was already leaning against the kitchen counter, casually sipping black coffee with his car keys resting beside a freshly printed stack of Sociology flashcards. He looked infuriatingly well-rested in a

I held his gaze for a second longer than I should have, the silence between us stretching tight and fragile. My heart was thudding so hard against my ribs I was terrified he could hear it echoing in the massive, hollow gym. Then, the absurdity of the whole situation caught up to me."Right," I muttered, breaking the spell as I grabbed my tote bag and slung it over my shoulder. "Because you're such an altruistic protector. You're doing this out of the goodness of your heart, not because you need me to pass Sociology so Richard doesn't pull your trust fund."Lael's lips twitched, the intense, dangerous look vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. He flipped open the leather folder, scanning the legal jargon with a bored expression. "A guy can have dual motives, Avery. Passing Sociology is a bonus. Watching Leon's jaw clench every time I put my arm around you? Priceless.""You're sick," I said, stepping off the bleachers and snatching my half-empty iced coffee from the metal bench. "I'm

The echo of the basketball hit the gym floor over and over, heavy and methodical. Feran caught a rebound off the backboard, spun it on his index finger, and threw a quick glance between Lael and me before tossing the ball back."You guys need a room or something?" Feran called out, his voice bouncing loudly off the high rafters. "Because the tension in here is thick enough to choke on, and I came here to shoot hoops, not act as a buffer for step-sibling angst.""Shut up, Feran," Lael said, not even looking back at him. His eyes remained locked on the rim as he caught the pass and sank another effortless jump shot.I leaned back against the top metal bar of the bleachers, clutching my half-melted iced coffee like a shield. "I am not having step-sibling angst. I am having you're-an-insufferable-jerk angst.""Right. Keep telling yourself that," Lael muttered. He dribbled past Feran, drove the lane, and scored a fast layup before turning around to wipe his forehead with the hem of his dar

He just scoffed, his grip on my wrist tightening just enough to guide me out the heavy glass doors toward the athletic center. "Please. As if you'd risk your precious GPA just to spite me."I glared at him, but I kept my mouth shut as we crossed the courtyard. We rounded the side of the field house toward the main arena where the hockey team usually prepped. The parking lot was dead quiet, and the giant double doors were completely locked tight. No fans, no loud music, no team buses—literally nothing.I stopped dead in my tracks, pulling my wrist out of his grip and looking around the completely deserted concrete lot."Uh... Lael?" I said, turning to face him with my hands on my hips. "Where is everyone? Where's the game?"Lael casually shoved his hands into his sweater pockets, a lazy, unbothered smirk pulling at the corner of his lips as he leaned against the brick wall."There isn't a game," he said smoothly. My jaw literally dropped. I stared at him for three full seconds, complet
