Before it all
Knock! Knock! The sound of knuckles rapping gently against the hard wood of the door tore the immaculate silence. There was an ongoing exam for the third year students of John Hewitt High school. The exam was meant to determine the future classes for the senior year and the students worked hard for this particular day. The intelligent ones desire to belong in the star class while the others’ goal was to simply pass the brain-wrecking exam and survive the whole year knowing that they are rightfully placed and will not be retained. Of course, they can retake the exam but those who cannot bear the humiliation of failing on the first take, are far more pressured than those who are taking it easy--- relying on the second take is unacceptable for the student elites. It was also a social suicide. Those who retake had no chance of making it big on the school hierarchy. A system similar to caste where the lowest are the nerds, the unpopular, the poor and the ugly. That is where Allie McA

Heiress on the loose
The manor stood gloriously in the middle of rolling fields. It’s bricked walls stood the test of time. It survived a lot including the attack of it’s vile enemies. Rustic and magnificent in size and in splendor, it is one of the many medieval infrastructures that didn’t crumble because it is still occupied by it’s original owners. Eccentric and powerful, they come from old money. One of the oldest and noblest families in the Britain. The Red’s. The whole place was gloomy. The head of the family, Henry Red was nestled in his colossal bed, surrounded by a flock of people all donned in black ensembles except for the doctor who was in white. The doctor came from the nearby city hospital. Doctor Francis Somber had been Henry’s doctor since he had his license. He came from a long line of physicians and his predecessors had been trusted and reliable Red doctors since. “How is he?” A bony man asked. “He is getting weaker. But I am giving him the necessary medications that will make the pa

Mistaken identity
“Principal Atkins, I think there is a huge mistake here.” Allie declared, eyes darting from the man who bowed to her and to the school principal who was equally intrigued of the turn of events. “Yeah..me too.” Principal Atkins shared the same sympathy. Earlier that morning, he got a phone call from the British Embassy stating that there was to be a very important diplomatic visit to happen in his school and it was imperative that they acted with full cooperation. What came as a much larger surprise to the principal was that he was not talking to the secretary of the ambassador but the ambassador himself. Before he could even lodge a question, the man on the other end of the line was quick to read between the lines and probably because he had done this so many times that he knew what it required to lessen the questions and get it over and done with. “Heed our request and we will be more than glad to sponsor your annex expansion.” “O-of course. Consider it done.” It seems like the

No chill Ice
“Where is Dad?” Ice asked their housemaid when dinner was served. For tonight, he was having steak and beans and chilled Cabernet Sauvignon. “He is not back yet, sir Ice. He was summoned to the Manor.” Upon hearing the current whereabouts of his father, Ice threw the glass of wine that was served to him and growled loudly. He was no longer surprised that his father woukd be out late from his shift but knowing that he is in the manor---it triggered his long withstanding rage. He despises that place and he despises the Reds for many things. Ice is Francis’ only son. While his father had a disposition and the understanding and patience of a saint---his son was the complete opposite of the father. Ice’s fuse is short and his temper contradicts his name. “Very well.” He pushed the plate away, sending the cutlery in shambles and the housemaid to tremble. “ I will not eat here.” “But, sir..” “Tell Dad, if he comes home that I am out in the pubs and tell him to not bother, I might hang w

First clash
“What?!” “You heard me, son.” Francis said with conviction. For the past years, they had not spoken like this. Face to face. As much as Francis would love to spend some time with Ice, his son have developed a very successful strategy of avoiding any possible conversation between them. He knew that Ice hated him and he could not blame the boy for doing so. While he was an adequate and a very good provider, he was absent for most of his son’s life. That was something that money cannot buy and lost time will never be reimbursed. He was so busy serving the people with his profession and he was dedicated to the pack that he didn’t notice the rift that was between him and Ice had turned into a gaping hole over the years. The boy used to adore him. Back in the day, Francis was so eager to finish his shift to spend the remainder of the day with his very pregnant wife. They were looking forward for the boy to complete their little family. Things had turned out pretty bad when Ice’s mother

Ice’s POV:I am not gonna lie. My life might be in turmoil and many may believe that I am a fan of chaos but I am not a liar. Honesty for me is valuable and I have cut off a lot of friends previously because they think it was no big deal for me. Well, obviously, that is straight up bonkers. The very first time in my life that my wits were blown is here. In New Jersey! I refuse to believe that I traveled miles to simply experience a situation that is beyond my control. I love control. I think my tongue literally rolled backwards to my esophagus, my knees wobbled that I had to grip the wooden desk where she was. To be very honest, I have had my fair share of unforgettable moments---but none of them had an impact like this to me, physically and something else that I cannot put my fingers on to.My insides felt like they were tied to a braid so tight that I can barely breath by an invisible force and after doing so, it also managed to light up a fire in the pit of my stomach. A heatles

Spewing lies
Allie’s POV:That day that I was pulled out in the classroom where I was taking the big exam along with my classmates and after they made a comical scene when they mistook me for someone else in Mister Atkins’ office---I ran home and I did not mention any of it to my mother. Today was another day of the same mistake. It happened in the library where I was allowed to be alone because it was the rule. I felt stares from other students but they can do nothing inside. It was like a sanctuary for me where they can stare at me but not do anything about it. The only downside was the amount of students waiting outside to either take a good look at me or throw jokes at me, because, like me, half of them was buying the whole royal story while the other half was on my team---we think they had the wrong girl.Nonetheless, it made me visible to the school populace and I do not like it. I was basically invisible, a wall flower, a nobody because of my social standing at school. I was the perfect tr

Blast from the past
Barbara’s POV:Candy barged in the moment Allie walked out of our trailer. She is no longer hunched and her body movements, faster and limber. Her cane stood beside her like she had no need for it.With only the two of us around, there was no need indeed.“What?!” I snarled, annoyed that she came in unannounced once more. At times like this, I often wonder if I made the right decision when I left London with her with my pregnant belly. Candy is my cousin and my best friend who is just three years older. The weighed blanket flung to one side of the bed and I stood up. Yes. I could walk, I am not an imbecile and yes, I lied to my daughter but I have my bloody reasons.“They’re here. They’ve found Allie.” Candy did not beat around the bush. She went ahead with the head shot. I froze on my feet. This cannot be happening! Not after all these years! We were careful! The memories of London came flashing back to me like an avalanche.I once belonged to the Red pack. My parents were stable h

Future Duke worries
Henry Red’s POV:I never married. All my life, I was treated with care, people made me feel that I am fragile when I was younger. My father did not want me around commoners children because he said I have to study well and exercise my authority at a young age. He said I was above them, that I was special and that so much was expected of me. Maybe that was how he was raised. Father was a just man and he is a fair ruler. Even the king and queen would honor his wisdom and even as young child, I have seem the highest royal visit our manor to seek my father’s advice. He is loved dearly for his wisdom and he wanted me to be just like him.But no two persons are the same.I studied hard, I train hard because that was my birthright. My father had raised me even without my mother, she died shortly after I was born and the duke of the Red manor never remarried. I honestly think that he did not want to because he was thinking about me. But it was not the reason why father remained a widower.

Caught!
“What the f*ck is happening here?” Allie exclaimed, her eyes focused on Barbara’s lower extremities that were functioning all too well.“Language, Allie!”“Seriously? You care about my language but not the fact that I am standing here, staring in full surprise at my mother whom I believe was supposed to be handicapped but it turns out it’s a prank?! I don’t think language is the main problem here!”There was a long silence as Barbara refused to meet her daughter’s eyes. Candy, who was standing by the door when Allie barged in was slowly stepping sideways, tip toeing and hoping that Allie won’t notice herself slithering away.“You are not going anywhere.”“A-allie..” Candy smiled awkwardly, “I don’t have anything to do with this, this is between you and your mother.”“Sit down.”“I have something in the oven.” “I don’t care if your trailer burns down!”Allie was not in the mood for jokes. She was betrayed and she deserves to know every bit of truth about her. Not the ones that were al
