Chapter 2

Claire Pov

I couldn't let go of the thought as it kept ringing in my head. I don't know why but father wasn't telling me the vital thing I needed to know. Why he desperately doesn't want me any way close to Alpha Nathan. Could it be that they shared an ugly past? Or the fact that it's just a birthmark to all werewolf alpha's to hate each other for no good reason?

I decided to talk to my mother about this, since she must have a reason why this is happening. She was busy knitting some thing on a white fabric which almost looked like a handkerchief.

"Hey," I said as I walked in. "You're busy?"

"Hey," she sighed. "Wanna work on this. It's been a long time since I did this."

I sat in the bed beside her. "Let me see what you've done." I said.

She gave me a look. "It's beautiful." I complimented.

"It's always beautiful. Thanks by the way."

I smiled. I thought of a way to start the conversation about alpha Nathan and dad, but a part of me just wanted me to shut the fuck up. And the other, was just as desperate as I am to know.

"You wanna talk to me about some thing?" She asked without looking at me.

"Yeah." I heaved. "There's some thing bothering me and I need an answer."

She paused, throwing her gaze at me. "What is it? You know you can always tell me what your problem is."

"I know. But..."

"But what?" She asked, sounding curious to know.

"I feel like you will keep me hanging just like father did." I said, coldly.

She smiled. "Your father and I are not the same. I understand your feelings more than he does."

I didn't say a word.

"Talk to me, I'm listening."

"It's about the party last night." I finally started.

"What happened to it?" She asked.

"While I was dancing with a friend, I perceived a smell. It was different from any other I have ever perceived. I went to search for who's scent it was, then I met him. I had never seen him before until that night. We were halfway to getting to know each other until father interfered. He refuses to let me talk to him. You've got to see the way he pushed him off like he's some kinda monster."

"No, that's not good. Did you get to know his name?" She asked.

"Yes, I did." I replied.

"What's his name?" She asked again.

"I don't really know his full name. But I heard dad call him Alpha Nathan." I said with certainty.

Mom was quiet for a moment, leaving me to wonder why. Could it be that she knows some thing too? She doesn't look only speechless, but shocked. Or... Could it be that she knows Alpha Nathan? Do they share a bad past with him?

"What's wrong, mom?" I asked, hoping she won't keep me hanging just like father did.

"Claire, your father is right not wanting you to have any thing in common with alpha Nathan."

"What happened between you guys? Did he do some thing wrong?" I asked inquisitively.

"Well, sweetheart, it's a long story. Honestly, Alpha Nathan was..." She paused, leaving me in curiosity.

"Was what?"

"He was my mate before your father met me." My mouth opened but no word left my mouth. "Some thing conspired between your father and Alpha Nathan, so your father took me under custody. I think then, he needed some thing from Nathan. Nathan did give it to him but ummm... It was already too late."

"Too late?" I asked. "I don't understand. What was too late?"

"Saving me. I discovered your father was my true mate and not him. I also got to know a lot of things I didn't know about Nathan. And I knew if I stayed any longer with him," she shakes her head. "I'll be doomed."

"But..."

"He looks innocent?"

She knew exactly what I wanted to say. "Yes. And... he was nice to me last night. Mother, I felt some thing between us, like there's this bond that joins us or some thing. I felt the spark too, could it be? Could it be that Alpha Nathan is my mate?"

"Yes." She said, sounding cold.

"Is there any way fate can be changed?" I asked.

"Some times, but not every one are lucky for a change of fate."

Then there has to be a way. I said to myself. I couldn't resist the bond I shared last night. It was so strong that it was able to get my attention despite the distance. What if this is my only chance? What if this is my appointed time to be mated?

What if there isn't a second chance for me? Will I just let this go like that?

"You don't have to worry so much about it. I have a bad feeling about Nathan's return, there's got to be a reason for him showing up."

I don't know why she had said that, but I wanted to know why. Could it be a good reason? Or a bad one?

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

"It's either he has come to take me back, or he has come to take revenge."

"But why will he want to take you back? You're married already."

"Alpha Nathan has always loved me, that he was able to offer the gem of eternity to your father in order to have me back."

"Why then does he want revenge?" I asked.

"I don't know. But whatever reason he's got, I don't think it's good. That is why you must be careful with him. Whether he is your mate or not doesn't count. Alpha Nathan might have an innocent look, but trust me, you don't wanna find out what's on the inside."

I'd say, mother's words freaked me out. I was beginning to believe her words, finding every possible way to hate alpha Nathan and refuse him out of my life. But then, the more I keep pushing the feelings off, the more it comes.
