Chapter 6

DIMITRI

"I should not have lost control," Dimitri snapped at himself as he transformed back to his human form and looked down at fragile body of Kira. She was totally out of it. "But why did she had to call him a dog?" he added to himself. "Does she not know!"

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Dimitri huffed and opened the door.

"I heard your anger from a long way away," spoke Taron, Dimitri's first beta, his closest ally and protege. "Who offended you to enough to lose control?" he asked seriously.

"Her," Dimitri spoke as he controlled his temper.

Taron tilted his head to see the fallen form of Kira. "The poor girl lost her consciousness, did she?" he asked curiously.

“I cannot even fathom how stupid and mellow she is,” Dimitri spoke. He felt angry, but not at Kira now, but at himself. He was not supposed to lose his cool like this.

“Is she mellow or unaware of our existence?” Taron demanded as he entered the room and walked up to the fallen form of Kira. “Why do you have this human with you anyway? Don’t you know that having a human is mere stupidity?” Taron asked intrigued.

“She was in the Hew, they cannot auction a human, and she cannot be unaware,” Dimitri spoke, though he himself knew it was not true. If Kira was like him, then she would not have fainted at the sight of his wolf. Her reaction said that she was unaware of the world he belonged to…

“But didn’t she say she was kidnapped? What if she is a human and was just sold due to lack of candidates?” Taron reasoned coolly. “These hosts are not very popular for their ethics, isn’t it?”

Dimitri did not like the sound of it.

“She is like us,” Dimitri spoke after a thought.

“How do you know it?” Taron asked, his interest piqued.

“I just know,” Dimitri huffed, even though he himself did not know why and how he knew it. He just did!

“Anyway, she is hurt, poor girl has been rendered unconscious at least three times in the last twenty four hours. Even for us, it is not healthy,” and Taron simply picked her up and placed her back in the bed.

Why! Why oh why did it pricked Dimitri so much to see Kira in Taron’s arms. There was nothing romantic in it, there was no attachment from either side, and yet, seeing him touch her angered Dimitri.

“Why did you buy her in the first place?” Taron demanded once he had covered Kira with a sheet. “Fifty K is too much even for her!” he raised his eyebrows. But Dimitri was not listening, he was staring at Kira, who was sleeping peacefully but still had a shadow of fear on her face.

Taron stared from Dimitri to Kira and then back to Dimitri, and patted Dimitri’s shoulder.

“What?” Dimitri spoke with a start.

“I got my answer, brother,” Taron patted his arm shoulder again. “Anyway, boss, I will dig into her parentage and will find out what is she, okay?”

“She is just a slave,” Dimitri spoke half-heartedly. “You don’t need to ---”

“Just a slave?” Taron asked with raised eyebrows and stared at his alpha. And then after a pause spoke, “as you say, boss.” And with a smile, he left.

KIRA

Kira woke with a start. She was aching all over. Last time when she had fallen unconscious, Dimitri had caught her, or she hoped at least, but this time, Dimitri was… he was… she panted as the memory of a big, scary monster flashed in front of her eyes. Dimitri was not human, he was … she gulped as she turned her face to see the man who was lying beside her. His eyes were closed and it seemed he was sleeping. Kira’s heart was thudding in her heart as she tried to free herself from the sheets that were covering her and tried to step out of the bed. Dimitri moved slightly but continued to sleep.

Exhaling softly, slowly, very slowly Kira crawled out of the bed and looked out of the window. It was still dark and it seemed dawn was about to crack.

‘Okay!’ Kira thought to herself, ‘It is still middle of the night, I was wrong before to think it was morning!’ she thought. ‘If it is night, I can runaway…’

She walked up to the door and much to her astonishment found her luggage placed by it. Someone had cleaned out her hotel room and brought her belongings here. She even saw her purse on the cabinet next to the TV unit. She picked it up and looked inside. Her passport, her wallet, money, everything was still in it.

Heaving a sigh of relief, Kira put the sling of her purse around her neck and opened the door as quietly as she could.

The door did not even make slightest noise and opened with ease.

‘Was it even locked?’ Kira wondered as she stepped out and pulled it to close it just as quietly.

Once out, she ran… she ran like her life depended on it, which it literally did!

“How can I help you miss?” the man at the reception called out. He was half dozing but hearing her running feet he woke up and stood. “Are you okay miss?” he asked again.

Something in his expressions said he would tell Dimitri immediately about her departure, so she composed herself and started to walk casually. “Oh, just out for a morning walk!” she smiled.

“Without any shoes, miss?” the man asked with raised eyebrows.

“Have you never walked in the morning grass? You should try it, it is very refreshing and peaceful,” Kira simpered as she walked out of the hotel, hoping sincerely that the man bought her lies.

She ran out the main doors, she ran out the gate… but there was nothing in sight. Sea was gushing right in front of her, its waves rising and falling rapidly under the pull of the moon, and the road, the muddy road lay barren on either side.

‘Which way was airport?’ she wondered and randomly choosing a side, she started to run.

The small rocks, mud and all other things that people threw on the road irritated her feet, resulting in small angry blisters, but she did not stop. She ran as fast her legs and flimsy dress – in which she was very cold now – allowed.

She was hoping she was far enough to leave Dimitri and his men behind when suddenly she heard footsteps behind her. Someone was walking casually, slowly, almost leisurely, whistling at ease.

Dread filled her as she turned.

Dimitri, in his white shirt and pajamas, was walking at a steady pace, as if he had no care in the world.

“I don’t think this road is peaceful and refreshing for a bare feet walk, is it?” Dimitri spoke as he stood in front of her, almost smiling.

Kira was panting heavily. She clutched the stitch in her side and bent double when Dimitri pulled out bathroom slippers of the hotel and showed them to her.

“For your feet,” he smiled lazily.

Kira stared at his gesture in horror, but took the slippers nonetheless.

And then with even a wider smile, he added, "Didn’t I tell you I will KILL YOU if you tried to run away from me?”
