Chapter 1

~~~AN ENGAGEMENT PARTY?~~~
~~~SLOANE’S POV~~~

People think heartbreak is loud. That when your world shatters there is screaming, crying, chaos.

But that is not true.

The moment your life truly breaks… everything becomes very quiet.

The air feels thick. Sounds stretch strangely. Time slows until every second feels like it is dragging its nails across your skin.

I learn that on my wedding night.

Two hours ago, my husband leaves our bed in the middle of making love to me. He kisses my cheek like nothing is wrong, slides out of bed, and tells me he has to handle something important downstairs. His voice is calm. Casual. Almost distracted.

I laugh softly and tell him not to take too long.

I think he will be back in a few minutes.

After all, Jophiel has been my world for five years. My first love. My first everything. The man I trust enough to save myself for. He is my husband now, and like a good wife, I wait.

At first it is easy.

I lie there in the silk sheets, replaying the evening in my head, smiling like an idiot. The wedding is perfect. The vows. The dancing. The way he looks at me when he says I am his forever.

But minutes pass.

Then more minutes.

And slowly the quiet of the house begins to change.

At first I think I imagine it. A faint sound drifting up from somewhere below.

Music.

Soft. Distant. Almost like an echo leaking through the floors.

I sit up slowly, frowning as I listen harder. The music is still there. Muffled through the floors, but definitely real. And every minute it grows louder.

That makes no sense.

The wedding ended hours ago. Everyone left. The staff cleaned up and went home.

So who the hell is playing music in my house?

I push the thought aside and climb out of bed, wrapping my arms around myself for a moment.

If Jophiel is going to take a little longer, maybe I can surprise him.

My cheeks warm at the idea.

I wait my entire life for tonight. I save myself for marriage, for the man I believe is my heavenly match. Jophiel knows that. He always says he respects it. That he admires my patience.

Five years together.

And tonight is finally ours.

I walk to the small basket on the side table and pick up a handful of rose petals I hide earlier. Slowly, carefully, I scatter them across the bed, watching the red petals fall against the white silk sheets.

Then I lean forward and trace three simple words across the centre.

I LOVE YOU

I step back and admire it, smiling softly to myself.

“Jophie will love this,” I murmur.

I even buy him a few gifts earlier in the day. They are hidden in the drawer beside the bed, waiting for him.

For some reason, I almost feel grateful he steps out for a while. Now everything can be perfect when he returns.

But the music downstairs keeps getting louder.

The bass thumps through the floor again, strong enough this time that I feel the faint vibration beneath my feet.

My smile fades.

That is not background music anymore.

That is a party.

A strange unease creeps into my chest as I glance toward the bedroom door. The house should be quiet now. Empty. Peaceful after the long day.

Instead, it sounds like something big is happening downstairs.

I walk to my wardrobe and pull out my soft pink robe, slipping it over the delicate lingerie I choose for my husband tonight. The silk settles against my skin like a second layer.

For a moment, I hesitate at the door, my hand resting on the handle.

Then curiosity wins.

Maybe some guests return. Maybe the wedding party decides to celebrate a little longer.

I open the door and step into the hallway.

The music hits me immediately.

It is louder now. Alive. Pulsing through the house like a heartbeat.

As I move toward the staircase, laughter joins the noise. Voices. Glasses clinking. Someone cheering loudly.

My confusion deepens with every step.

When I reach the top of the stairs, the massive sitting room comes into view below.

And I stop moving.

The room is decorated again.

Bright lights. Streamers hanging from the ceiling. Tables covered in champagne bottles and glasses. People dancing in the centre of the room as music blasts through the speakers.

A full party.

My eyebrows pull together in confusion.

“What the hell…?”

Then my eyes move across the room.

And I freeze.

My parents are standing near the bar.

My mother’s hand is pressed over her mouth like she cannot breathe. My father’s face is dark red, his jaw tight enough that the muscles jump in his cheeks. They both stare at something across the room with identical expressions of shock and rage.

My stomach twists.

Why do they look like that?

I follow their line of sight.

Friends of Selena and Jophiel are everywhere. Drinking. Dancing. Someone is literally twerking on a table like this is the celebration of the year.

“What are they doing here?” I whisper.

Before I can make sense of anything, Genevieve suddenly throws her hands in the air and shouts over the music.

“ENGAGEMENT PARTIES SHOULD ALWAYS BE AT NIGHT!”

The crowd erupts into cheers.

Another voice yells, laughing, “Their love for each other is intentional!”

My stomach drops so hard it feels like something tears inside me.

Engagement?

My hand tightens on the railing.

“Engagement…?” I whisper.

That makes no sense.

Selena tells me her boyfriend plans to propose soon, but definitely not today. Not during my wedding. She spends the entire morning helping me get ready. She stands beside me during the ceremony.

Selena would not do something like this.

Right?

I walk down the stairs slowly, my pulse pounding in my ears.

And then I see them.

Selena is sitting on someone’s lap on the far side of the room.

My husband’s lap.

Time stops.

My heart skips so violently it hurts. My eyes widen as my brain refuses to process what I am seeing.

No.

No.

That is not what it looks like.

Selena and Jophiel are close, yes. They always get along well. She helps him plan the wedding. She even helps pick the design of my dress.

But this-

This is different.

And then Jophiel leans forward.

And kisses her.

The room tilts.

Maybe he is drunk, I think wildly. Maybe this is some stupid joke. Maybe everyone is in on some ridiculous prank.

My brain scrambles desperately for any explanation that makes sense.

“Hey! You’re here!”

Genevieve suddenly appears beside me, shoving a glass of wine into my hand like nothing is wrong.

“Come join us!”

My legs move on their own, carrying me across the room even though my mind is still trying to catch up.

“Jophiel…” I whisper.

The name barely leaves my mouth before he looks up.

And sees me.

One hour and thirty minutes.

That is how long I wait for my husband upstairs.

And he spends it here.

Sitting with Selena.

People slowly start noticing me standing there. The music lowers. Conversations fade. Faces turn toward us one by one.

Some gasp.

Others look uncomfortable.

A few look… amused.

Like I interrupt something.

“Jophiel,” I say again, my voice shaking as I step closer. “Are you drunk? What the fuck did I just see?”

Selena stands immediately.

Her eyes meet mine.

But instead of guilt… they are sharp.

Territorial.

Like I am the one intruding.

“Do I look drunk to you, Sloane?” Jophiel asks calmly.

Someone snorts.

Another person laughs.

The sound punches the air out of my lungs.

“I just saw Selena sitting on your lap,” I say, my voice cracking. “And you kissed her. What the hell is this? Some kind of sick joke?”

My hand gestures weakly at the decorations.

“And what the fuck is all this? What is this party?”

Jophiel’s expression hardens.

“I’m sure you’re not blind, Sloane,” he says coldly. “Read the room.”

A sharp gasp comes from somewhere behind me.

My ears start ringing.

“Selena…” I whisper desperately. “What is going on?”

She smiles.

Slowly.

“It’s my engagement party, darling,” she says sweetly. “My fiancé proposed a few minutes ago and we’re celebrating.”

The knot in my stomach tightens painfully.

My voice comes out small.

“On my wedding night?”

My eyes flick between them, panic rising like fire in my chest.

“Selena… please tell me this is a joke.”

She laughs.

Then she raises her hand.

And on her finger…

Is my wedding ring.
