•CAMILLA•

“Miss Camilla,” the butler, Alec, bowed his head after opening the front door for me.

“Hey, Alec. Thank you.” I walked straight ahead and saw Paxton approaching in the hallway.

“Hey, Pax. Is Dad home? I need to talk to him.”

“What’s happening? Is there anything wrong?” He asked when he saw the frown on my face as I looked in the living room and then bolted my eyes to the staircase, leading to his study.

“There’s nothing wrong. You don’t have to worry about that,” I was frowning. I was angry and hormonal.

I was tired of Cecilia’s abuse and wanted to put an end to it all. I didn’t want to be abused by her in my father’s house anymore.

But before I could step onto the staircase to the second floor, Asher was already in my face.

I was angry at him. He was my brother and didn’t have to say all the things he said to me, all because of Cecilia.

“Get out of my way, Asher, I’m not here for you,” I hissed.

“Father is busy,” he responded.

“I don’t care; I will see my father if I want to see him. Now, get out of my way,” I commanded him.

“You’re not allowed to be here until you do what I told you to do. If you want to be a part of this family like everyone else, you must play your part,” he answered.

I chuckled. He amused me because the way he said that made me think we had to please Cecilia just like he was. Which made me wonder what he stood to gain.

“You’re bluffing, right?” I chuckled. “All these threats about disowning me as your sister because of Cecilia’s demands to be in charge of a project that I have no say in, what makes you think I care?”

“Then leave, Camilla,” he scolded.

“Dad!” I called at the top of my voice, looking up the stairs. “Dad!”

Asher grabbed my arm and tightened his grip as he led me down the hallway to the front door.

Paxton just stood there and watched, but before Asher could get me out of the house, my father’s voice halted him.

“That’s enough, Asher! Leave my daughter alone!” He commanded, causing even my heart to skip a beat.

“Why are you trusting her as if she’s your only child, Father?” Asher growled. “Not so long ago, your health was declining because she was nowhere to be found. You were on the verge of death because of her!” He pointed at me.

“First, you accused me of flaring our mother’s cancer when she got pregnant with me, and now this?” I scoffed. “I can’t allow you to put the blame for everything on me, Asher.”

“Your dearest papa didn’t want to tell you he almost died because of you,” he sneered as he leaned closer. “Camilla, you are a curse on this family. Your touch poisons everything, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you blackmailed Santino into marrying you.“

“How dare you?!” I snapped. “If you don’t get out of my way this minute to talk with my father, I’m going to yank your head against the wall.”

“The truth always hurts, sister. Coming back home was a terrible mistake. You should’ve stayed in the damp where you came from and left us alone.”

“Why do you hate me?” I breathed. “All I have ever done my entire life was to please you, Paxton, and Sakai. I treated you with so much respect because you’re older than me, but I don’t think I deserve the way you’re treating me, Asher.”

“I thought we had already had that talk. I never liked you from the moment our mother told us she was expecting another baby. We knew she was risking her cancer coming back or flaring up. If you weren’t born, she would still be alive.”

Hearing him say it again shattered my heart into pieces, and I felt my body growing weak.

“I said, that’s enough, Asher!” my father exclaimed as he walked toward us.

“Why, Father?” Asher shot back. “She deserves to be told the truth, and I’m going to say it the way it is! She killed our mother! Sakai and I were the ones who had to watch her lose herself after she gave birth to her. We watched as she struggled to regain her strength, and for 8 years, she tried to fight the cancer, but it took her! All that wouldn’t have happened if she wasn’t born!”

“If you say one more -“ My father groaned. “If -“ He grabbed his heart, groaning.

“Father, are you alright?” Asher asked as he grabbed his hand.

“Ahh!” Father shrieked before he fell to the floor.

***

“Well, Camila,” my stepmother seethed. “I hope you’re happy now that your father has suffered a heart attack because of you.”

“How can you say something like that to me?” A tear slipped down my eye. “He’s my father.”

“Yet,” she leaned closer. “You have been disappointing him ever since you were born. You’ve been a more troublesome child than the rest of his other kids. He’s in that hospital bed because of you.”

“If you’re looking for someone to project your insecurities and failures onto, Cecilia, I suggest you look in the mirror.” I shot back. “Ever since you came into our lives, you’ve been trying so hard to replace us in our father’s life.”

“If your mother were alive, I guess I would understand where your stubbornness and foolishness come from. If your father dies today, you’re going to lose everything that you thought you had, little Missy.”

“Excuse me, I’m going to see my father.” I walked past her as I headed to my father’s ward room and avoided going back and forth for no reason.

My heart broke when I saw him lying on that hospital bed, as if he wouldn’t open his eyes again.

I sat down on the chair near his bed and grabbed his hand. I caressed it gently, hoping that he would feel my touch and come back to me.

“Father, I’m sorry. I didn’t know that you had heart problems. I know I made things worse when I left home and refused to say my whereabouts. Please, open your eyes and tell me what to do to make up for what I did.”

“Cam - Camilla,” he groaned as he opened his eyes, tilting his head toward me.

“Daddy!” I squealed as I got up the chair. “My God, you’re awake. Should I call the doctor for you?”

“No,” he breathed. “Sit.”

I sat down and looked at him, feeling grateful that he up and was well.

“I’ve been conscious for some time now; I pretended to be still out because I didn’t want your stepmother and Asher creating more trouble for me.”

“I’m sorry, Dad. I didn’t know that my mother’s cancer -“

“Stop,” he interrupted me. “Her cancer was never your fault, Camilla. You are our child, and we loved you from the moment your mother found out that she was pregnant with you. I want you to know that your mother loved you, and she would have given her life for yours if she had to, just like I would.”

“Thank you, Dad.” I sobbed as I leaned my head on his shoulder.

“I want you to do something for me, Cam. In my study, you will find an envelope in my drawer. I want you to bring it to me tomorrow morning. Make sure that no one sees you, especially Cecilia.”

“Yes -“

The door creaked open as I was about to answer, and Cecilia, Asher, and Paxton walked in.

“Oh, my husband, you’re finally awake!” Cecilia squealed as she rushed to his bed.

I leaned back and watched as they all pretended as if I wasn’t in the same room with them.

CAMILLA•“Oh, baby, I hope you’re going to get well soon. You know that our home is not complete without you. In the meantime, I’ll manage our factories and make sure that everything runs smoothly,” Cecilia said to my father.“Thank you, honey, but I’m fine.” My father insisted.“You can rest, Dad, and trust Asher and me to oversee the hotels that you entrusted to our care. We won’t let you down. We will make sure that everything runs smoothly.”“Yes, Dad, including the Elysian Fields Mall that Paxton and I have been overlooking these past few months. We are going to make sure that we don’t let you down.”Do you see?” Cecilia beamed. “You can trust us to take care of the family business. You can tell Santino that I am a capable person for the project. I know the ins and outs of our business, Don.”I rolled my eyes as I walked to the door and left. There was no use. They all acted oblivious to my presence, anyway, so there was no need to be there.Luckily, we were at a very exclusive h

•SANTINO•“Giovanni will come back from his last day of campaigning as the mayor of Chicago and will go to see his son before heading to his house. He usually spends about an hour with his baby mama, probably getting some, and then gets home around 8 PM for dinner.”“How heavy is his security system?” I asked after Cole informed me about what he found about Giovanni’s schedule for the day.“He has a surveillance system around his property, including 3 security guards at the gate and 2 security guards on each floor of his 5-storey house.”“So, we have 13 security guards to take care of?”“Probably 16, including the 2 that he goes around with and the one who watches his surveillance cameras in the house. We have to figure out how we are going to get past that.”“Tony was Giovanni’s former bodyguard, so he knows the way around the house, including the secret entrances and exits. We will also get clothes that are worn by the security guards just so that we can blend too easily without dra

•CAMILLA•“My God, can you believe what’s trending?” Francesca scoffed as I walked into the living room and found her on her laptop.“What is it?” I asked, sitting down with my bowl of cereal.“Sasha Ross,” she looked at me. “She told the journalists that she left the Parus shopping store because two women were invading her privacy and making her uncomfortable. She called us opportunists.”I rolled my eyes with a sigh. “Well, I hope she’ll leave Chicago soon before we bump into Lucius. I don’t want to see him.”“Seems like she wasn’t planning on being in Chicago for too long. Her new location on her social media is New York City.”“That’s better.”“My God, we have to expose her, Camilla. She’s not related to you. I can’t believe she has the nerve to flaunt herself as a fake Ross on social media.”“We should let her do as she wants, Francesca. She won’t be able to keep her lie for too long, anyway.”“I just hate her fucking nerves. She must be arrested for this. I wonder what Lucius is

•SANTINO•“Shit,” I sighed as I picked up the pictures from the floor. She busted me.My cell phone rang as I put the pictures inside the envelope and placed it inside my bedside drawer.“Yes, Paul?”“I have four men with me, sir. Two of them are good with their guns; one is a martial arts teacher, and the other is Giovanni’s former bodyguard. They let him go after he was absent from work, attending to his sick mother.”“That’s good. Thank you, Paul. Please tell them to be in my office at the club by 9 in the morning. I have to talk with them in person.”“Alright, sir.”I hung up the call, and though I was angry that Camilla got inside my room and snooped around while I wasn’t around, I had to explain the pictures that she found.I went to the third floor and knocked on her door. She didn’t answer, but I could hear her sniffling.“Camilla, I’m sorry. I know what you saw was strange, but I wasn’t stalking you. You were gone for quite a long time, and I needed to know that you were okay

•CAMILLA•“Camilla, what are you doing in my room?”I looked at the pictures on the floor and felt my blood boiling. Yes, I invaded his privacy by coming into his room, but he had been stalking me for years! One picture was taken after a year I had been in Brooklyn, and during that time, I was already married to Lucius. My mind was all over the place, and my heart was racing. I was angry. I was fuming and knew that I wouldn’t be able to say the right words, so I walked out the door and said nothing to him. When I got to the third floor, I got inside my room and locked the door behind me. I kept pacing up and down, asking myself what the pictures meant.Santino and I shared only one night of pleasure, then we were strangers until he arrived home with my stepmother, and my stepmother told me he was my arranged husband.I remembered the day perfectly when he walked into the living room, and when he saw me, he scowled. It was clear he didn’t agree with the whole thing as well. He didn’t w

•CAMILLA•“Have you heard that Lucius Hall got married to Don Ross’s niece? It’s believed that his brother, Daniel, has a daughter, and she’s the one who just tied the knot with the billionaire in Florida.”“Really? I wonder why we haven’t seen the family together, especially Camilla Ross. She’s also the only daughter of Don Ross. I expected that she would have social media platforms to flaunt her fabulous lifestyle and wealth.”“Maybe she doesn’t like the spotlight. I’ve heard that she’s not ideal to look at. Makes sense why she’s being hidden from the public.”I scoffed as I turned off the podcast and got up from the couch. I put on my coat and went to get something to eat from the kitchen that I shared with Santino.“I don’t think that she should be in charge of the project. We both know that she knows nothing about the family business, Don. When are you going to realize that your daughter is a leech who wants to feed off other people’s hard work and not do anything for herself?!”

•SANTINO•“Haley?”She chuckled when she saw me. “I knew I had to lie about having a baby to see you. I can’t believe that you’re still a playboy, buddy.”“What are you doing here?”“It’s been a long time, Sanny. I had to come over and check up on you. The last time we saw each other, it was during Derrick’s funeral.”Derrick’s funeral was 2 years ago. He was one of my best friends, and a shootout killed him. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.“You know you didn’t have to lie about your name and being pregnant for me if you wanted to see me.” I opened the door in my office and let her in.“Well, you and I left things hanging the last time you returned to Chicago. So, how was I to know that you still wanted to see me?”I turned to her and scoffed. “Your brother didn’t want us together, remember? I didn’t want to make you choose between me and your family.”“Travis just wanted to see if you had balls. I guess you proved him otherwise.”“Does he know that you’re here?”She sigh

•CAMILLA•“How dare you, Alisha?!” Olivia roared on the phone. “After everything that my son did for you — picking you up from the damp and bringing you inside our home — you have the guts to send someone to threaten him so that he would sell his company to him?!” she snapped.“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I left your home as you instructed and allowed your son to be with the one he wanted. So, what do you want from me now?”She scoffed. “You’re going to regret this, Alisha. When my son regains all that he has lost, you’re going to come back and beg for his forgiveness. In fact, I give you a week. You’re going to come crawling back on your knees, begging him to take you back in.”“Olivia, tell your son to stop implicating me in his business because I will not take any more insults from either of you, and stop calling this number.”I hung up the call and got rid of the phone since I was no longer using my old identity.I scoffed as I thought of how Santino might have gotten
