The lights snapped on.

Rose blinked hard, her vision clearing—

And then everything inside her went still.

The man standing in the doorway wasn’t a stranger.

Her breath caught.

“…No.”

Jason’s grip on her tightened instantly.

“You know him?” he asked sharply.

Rose couldn’t answer.

Because she did.

Ethan Cole.

Standing there like nothing had changed.

Like he hadn’t disappeared from her life without a trace.

Like he wasn’t now holding a file with her name on it.

“Rose,” Ethan said softly.

Jason stepped in front of her immediately.

Blocking him.

“Don’t say her name,” Jason said, voice low.

Ethan’s gaze flicked to him.

Calm.

Unbothered.

“And you must be Jason.”

That made Jason’s posture harden.

“How do you know me?” he asked.

Ethan lifted the file slightly.

“I make it a point to know things that matter.”

Rose stepped out from behind Jason before he could stop her.

“How are you here?” she demanded.

Jason’s hand caught her wrist.

“Rose—”

She pulled free.

“I’m talking to him.”

That alone shifted something.

Jason didn’t like that.

Not one bit.

Ethan noticed.

Of course he did.

“I didn’t come here to fight,” Ethan said.

Jason let out a cold laugh.

“Funny way of showing it.”

“Enough.”

Daniel’s voice cut in.

All three of them turned.

He hadn’t moved far.

Still standing near the side of the room.

Watching.

Observing.

Like this had all been expected.

Because it had.

“You’re escalating unnecessarily,” Daniel said calmly.

Jason turned fully toward him now.

“Unnecessarily?” he repeated. “You let him in.”

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Rose’s heart dropped.

Jason stepped forward. “Why?”

Daniel’s gaze shifted briefly to Rose.

Then back.

“Because,” he said, “he’s relevant.”

Ethan smirked slightly.

Jason didn’t.

“Relevant to what?” Rose asked.

Daniel’s eyes settled on her now.

“To you.”

That word landed heavier than it should have.

Rose’s chest tightened.

Jason stepped closer again, his voice sharpening.

“This isn’t a game, Daniel.”

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“No,” he said. “It’s not.”

Ethan moved slightly further into the room.

Not aggressive.

Just… intentional.

“You’re both looking at this the wrong way,” he said.

Jason snapped his attention back to him.

“Then explain it.”

Ethan’s gaze returned to Rose.

“She deserves to know what she’s standing in.”

Jason’s patience snapped.

In one fast movement, he grabbed Ethan and shoved him back against the wall.

“Jason!” Rose shouted.

But he didn’t let go.

“You don’t get to show up out of nowhere and start talking like that,” Jason said.

Ethan didn’t fight back.

Didn’t even try.

He just looked at Rose.

“Still the same,” he said quietly.

That was enough.

“Let him go.”

Rose’s voice was firm.

Jason didn’t move.

“Jason.”

Something in her tone made him stop.

Slowly—

Reluctantly—

He released Ethan.

The tension didn’t drop.

It shifted.

Ethan adjusted his shirt calmly.

“You always did have a temper,” he added.

Jason’s jaw clenched.

“Say that again.”

“Stop it,” Rose cut in.

She stepped forward now.

Fully between them.

“I’m not doing this,” she said.

Her eyes moved between all three of them.

“Not when none of you are actually telling me what’s going on.”

Silence.

Then—

Daniel moved.

Just one step forward.

But it was enough.

The room shifted with him.

“You want clarity,” he said.

Rose met his gaze.

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Show her.”

Jason turned sharply. “No.”

Daniel didn’t even acknowledge him.

Ethan hesitated for a second.

Then opened the file.

Jason moved instantly—but Daniel’s voice stopped him.

“Let it happen.”

That was the first time his tone changed.

Not calm.

Commanding.

Jason stilled.

Not because he agreed.

Because something about it said—

Don’t push this right now.

Ethan pulled out a document and handed it to Rose.

Her fingers hesitated before taking it.

Then she looked down.

And everything inside her dropped.

Her name.

But not in any format she recognized.

A classification.

A code.

A file number.

Her breathing slowed.

Too slow.

“What is this?” she asked.

Ethan didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“It’s where this actually starts.”

Rose looked up.

“That’s not an answer.”

Daniel held her gaze.

“It’s the truth.”

Jason stepped forward again.

“Rose, don’t—”

She didn’t look at him.

Her eyes stayed on Daniel.

“Say it clearly,” she said.

A pause.

Then—

“You were never just hired,” Daniel said.

Silence.

Jason’s expression tightened.

Rose felt it immediately.

That shift.

That confirmation.

She turned to him slowly.

“What does that mean?”

Jason didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Rose’s chest tightened.

“You knew,” she said quietly.

His silence stretched too long.

“Rose—”

“You knew,” she repeated.

Her voice didn’t break.

But something inside it did.

Jason ran a hand through his hair.

Frustration. Conflict.

“It’s not what you think.”

“Then explain it.”

He didn’t.

Ethan watched closely now.

And Daniel—

Still calm.

Still in control.

“Choices define outcomes,” Daniel said.

Rose looked at him.

“What choice?”

Daniel gestured slightly.

“Him.”

Ethan.

“Or him.”

Jason.

Jason’s eyes darkened instantly.

“This isn’t a choice.”

Daniel didn’t react.

“It already is.”

Rose’s pulse pounded.

This wasn’t just information anymore.

This was direction.

Control.

And she hated it.

“I’m not choosing between people,” she said.

Daniel tilted his head slightly.

“You already are.”

Silence.

Rose looked at Ethan.

Then Jason.

Two very different dangers.

Two very different truths.

Her voice came out steady.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

Jason exhaled slightly.

Relief—barely there.

Ethan didn’t react.

Daniel studied her.

Then—

Very slowly—

He nodded.

“Then we proceed differently.”

That didn’t sound reassuring.

Rose’s grip tightened on the document.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked at her.

“It means,” he said calmly…

“You’re going to see everything.”

The lights flickered.

All screens in the office turned on at once.

Rose turned sharply.

And froze.

A video was playing.

Old footage.

Grainy.

A lab.

People moving quickly.

Voices shouting.

And then—

A younger version of herself.

On the screen.

Rose’s breath left her completely.

“No…”

Jason stepped forward.

“What is this?”

No one answered.

Because Daniel was watching her.

Not the screen.

Her.

And quietly—

Almost to himself—

“Now it begins.”
