Fire On Ice

SIRI

He was marvelous. A force of fire on ice.

He was fast, aggressive, violently knocking away anyone who tried to take the puck from him. He took on people built like a wall, and he didn't even flinch. He didn't waver.

There was beauty in his aggression and violence.

I didn't care about the other players on the rink. I didn't care about the thousands of fans cheering and singing. I only cared about him.

Jackson.

My eyes followed him all over the rink, and not once—I mean, not once—did I look away from him. I didn't look away even when he was winning or losing. I didn't look away when he scowled, smirked, grimaced, or looked so fucking smug.

He was perfection. A perfection I feel like I didn't deserve because I didn't want to taint him with my ugliness or bitterness. I wanted him to remain perfect, but… but for once in my damn life I wanted to be selfish.

For once in the endless bitterness and agony I call a life, I wanted to be held the way Jackson holds me. I wanted to be looked at the way Jackson looked at me, like I was all he could see. I wanted to be selfish and hold onto him even if that meant tainting him.

“Go, Jackson!” I cheered as one of his teammates scored another goal. It wasn't him who did, but I cheered for only him. I was here for only him, and not because I've suddenly developed a love for hockey. “Whoo!”

“You can’t do life alone,” the old woman's words echoed in my head. “So love while you can.”

I wasn't sure if this was love, but I wasn't going to question it. Michael’s words haven't stopped haunting me. They were there, right there beside her words: “You are fucking pathetic and will only ever be a plaything.”

The words haunt me every time I think I might have a chance with Jackson, but I've decided to leave the past where it belonged. I decided to let go of that ghost and move on.

Even if this doesn't last, even if these feelings make me pathetic, I don't mind. As long as I get to enjoy this moment, I don't care about the future. I was going to remain in the present, where he was.

The game ended, and his team won. As they cheered and celebrated, his eyes found mine. He didn't even search. He just turned and met my eyes immediately. He smiled, that smile that makes my heart stop and my lungs expand. There was a light in his eyes as he kept staring at me, a boyish charm on his face.

I smiled back, still cheering, not bothering to hide my excitement or feelings.

I was done hiding.

I was so done hiding.

~.~

The next stop was Stockholm. And… before the flight, we had a heated argument.

“Why won't you fly with me, Siri?” Jackson asked in a low voice as he stood in the middle of the room, his expression tight.

I couldn't look at him. I busied myself with packing my things into my bag even though everything was already well arranged.

“I already explained everything to you.”

“It sounds like a bloody excuse to me,” he gritted out.

“Well, it’s not.”

“Will the sky fall on our heads if my teammates see us together? Huh? It’s not exactly written on our foreheads that we’re fucking you know.”

I zipped my bag closed with more force than needed, finally turning to him. “Yeah, it’s not. But tell me, Jackson, how many of your teammates have a woman traveling with them?”

He hesitated. “That–”

“Zero, right?” I cut him off, my voice taking on a harsh tone. “So what will they think when they see us together?”

His fist clenched around the handle of his luggage. “So that’s it, then? You don't want to be seen with me because what? I’m your dirty secret?”

I gave him a hard look. “In case you haven't noticed, Mr., what we’re doing isn't actually right. We’re supposed to be stepsiblings, remember? So yes, this is a secret! It has to be. Nothing good will come from advertising to the world that we know each other, Jackson. Nothing good will come from being seen with me.”

Right before my eyes, his emotions got shut away. His face fell until it was… blank.

That… scared me.

“I thought we were making progress, Siri,” he said, his voice soft but somehow hard at the same time. “I thought we were finally past that push and shove.”

I took a step towards him. “We–”

“I’ll see you in Stockholm, then,” he said, turning away, and I watched his back as he left.

When the door closed behind him, I groaned, hitting the poor bed that had done nothing to me.

Why couldn't he understand?! Why was nothing getting through that thick skull of his?

He couldn't be seen with me!

Especially with his team.

Michael used to be on the hockey team before he transferred. Half of them knew him. Half of them were involved in the whole shit show. So they knew what happened. They saw the video.

So a tainted person like me couldn't be seen with Jackson. It would ruin his reputation, and I didn't need that! I couldn't let that happen!

I sat on the floor, sighing deeply.

“Why can't you understand I'm trying to protect you?”

~.~

He got to the hotel before me.

“I brought you something to eat,” he said when I stepped in, unpacking without looking at me.

“Jackson, I–”

“I know you wouldn't have eaten anything, so eat while it’s still hot,” he cut me off gently, still not looking at me.

My shoulders dropped, my grip tightening around my bag strap. I stood there without moving, staring at him as he moved and ignored me. The longer I stood there while he acted like I wasn't even there, the angrier I got.

“You’re being fucking childish,” I spat, and he froze with his hand halfway into his bag.

Very slowly, he turned to me, his expression cold enough to freeze hell. “What?”

“You’re being childish, Jackson,” I repeated, my voice sounding harder.

Yeah, fuck Toria and her stupid advice. Fuck that happy ending nonsense. Sure, I do want a happy ending with him. I want a happy beginning, middle, and ending with Jackson. All of that and more! Damn it, I had even been thinking of the perfect future together with him. Yes—and fuck you—I’ve been thinking of going somewhere with him, getting a house, three dogs, and maybe one cat. We could live like that for a few years, then get married, and decide if we wanted kids. I'd already mapped out the perfect future, the perfect ending. So yeah… Use him? USE him? How on God’s green earth can I use him when I was in love with him? I was madly in love with that man, and it made me realize that I was never in love with Michael. No. No, I was just in love with the attention and the idea of love, the idea that someone finally wants me. But this painful shit with Jackson? This soul-crashing devastation? Yeah, this was love. This was love in its purest, fucked up form.So how was I going to us

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Stay And Use

“I thought you might be gone already,” Toria said as we settled into my hotel room. “Jackson already booked my flight,” I said, opening a beer. “I leave in two days.”“Hmm. So what are you going to do till then? Stay cranked up in here?”“Probably.”“I could show you around, you know.”I thought about it for a second and shook my head, sipping my drink. “Thank you, but no.”I had thought about leaving and just going to tour on my own, but every time I thought about the possibility that I might run into him out there, I shook off that thought. Maybe I would have seen him with his hand around another woman’s waist, laughing with the boys and acting like that night didn't happen. But seeing him on screen tonight, I don't think any of that might have happened. I wanted to ask Toria what happened and why he looked that way, but then I might sound like I care, which I very much do, and I wanted to stay cool and keep up this nonchalant act until I was out of here. And so I sipped my drink

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my

CONTENT WARNING: This chapter contains references to domestic abuse and may be triggering to some readers. Reader discretion is advised. ~.~“I can think of a few things that can make you quit hockey,” my father said, his voice relaxed, but his face was filled with hell. He stood chest to chest with me, and I fought every instinct screaming at me to lower my eyes, to pull back. I fought them and stood perfectly still, not letting that dark look intimidate me.“What?” I spat. “Are you going to pay the coach to kick me out of the team? Then I'll just find another team to join.”“Jackson, please,” my mother whispered, and that just made my fists clench harder. Why was she calling me back and not her husband? He was the one threatening to take my dream away from me! My hopes for a better future, and still I was the one being called back? Did she really think I would just roll over and accept this bullshit? Bloody no. “That is way beneath me, Jackson,” he said in a low voice, acting li

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Just A Little More

SEVEN YEARS AGOThe sun had long since set, and the neighborhood was dark by the time I strolled in through the back door, my shoes tied together by their laces and hanging around my neck, my hands shoved into my pockets. Hopefully my parents were asleep by now, and I wouldn't have to deal with either of them. It was exhausting to look into their eyes these days and act like everything was fine when I harbored a little bit of hatred for my father. Okay, maybe it was more than a little bit, but I won’t tell if you don’t. I spent time at Jacob’s house long after practice, then came home and lied through my teeth, saying the coach sucked us dry with practice, which is why I was so late. You can’t blame me. The atmosphere in this house was depressing, and hearing my father whistle while he smoked his cigar, acting like all was right and fair in the world, was pissing me off when I could see my mother was losing weight, when I could clearly see she was losing her shine. She just needed
