Avery's POV

Jade had not said much to me since the incident at the library steps.

Not about Liam, not about the argument, not about what I had told her. She had come back to me a few days later with an apology that looked real even if it was not complete, and we had found our way back to something that felt like ourselves again. We had been careful with each other since then in the way you were careful with something that had recently broken and we were painfully aware of the cracks.

What I had

Liam's POVJace had a rule about new situations. He had explained it to me before I left for Crestwood. I thought he was clearly joking for the first two minutes but as he continued to talk, I realized he was serious."Keep your head down for the first month," he had said. "Just watch. Learn the room. Figure out who matters and who is just loud. Then you can start making moves."I had been keeping my head down.I had let the film session go. I had walked away from the corridor conversation with Colton and told myself it was the smart play, that Jace was right, that there was nothing to gain from making it a thing before I had established myself properly. Besides, he was the captain and I would stand to lose a lot by challenging him. I had focused on the training sessions and the playbook and getting the offence running the way it should and I had been disciplined about not giving Colton any form of reaction at all. This was now two and a half weeks of keeping my head down. Two and a

We had been careful with each other since then in the way you were careful with something that had recently broken and we were painfully aware of the cracks. What I had not accounted for was how much attention she was paying to me.Jade had always been observant. That was not new. But there was a difference between her normal attention, the kind that came from loving someone and knowing them well, and the kind she was running now, which was sharper and more deliberate and had a specific subject.I felt it the way you felt someone watching you from across a room without looking up. Small things. The slight pause before she answered when I mentioned the project.

Liam's POVI had been on enough teams to know the difference between a captain of a team who wanted you to succeed and one who needed you to know your place.Colton was the second kind and I had known it within the first week of being here in this new team.He was good at his job. I was not going to pretend otherwise. He ran routes cleanly, he knew the playbook better than anyone on the offence, and he had a way of commanding a huddle that most players had to earn over years. Technically, he was exactly what a wide receiver captain should be. But there was something else underneath all of that, something that had nothing to do with football and everything to do with the fact that I had walked into the starting position that everyone had apparently understood was untouchable.I did not take the starting spot from him. The spot was always mine. I was recruited for it and he knew that before I arrived. But knowing something and accepting it were two different things, and Colton had not m

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   033: Leaving

Avery's POVHe is my best friend, Liam had said. He had such a craveable relationship with his dad.I was lying there in a motel room in a wig and a mask next to a man who did not know my real identity, and somehow that sentence had gotten through every layer of armour I had and landed somewhere soft in my chest. That was a problem.I stayed quiet for a moment, looking at the ceiling, letting the words settle and trying to work out exactly how much damage they had done. The answer was more than I was comfortable with. Then I decided to change the subject and asked, "Does it come naturally to you? Trusting people?"He thought about it. Not quickly, not with the kind of easy confidence that usually meant someone had not actually considered the question. He actually sat with it."No," he said. "Not quickly. Not most people." He looked at the ceiling. "You?""No," I said."How long does it take you?""Longer than this," I said honestly. He nodded like that was a fair answer and did not pu

Avery's POVHe did not answer straight away.I had asked about Jade like I was asking about a random stranger I didn't know. He was quiet as if there was an elephant in the room for a second or two before he picked it up. I lay still and waited and told myself I was just curious, that it was a natural follow-up question from everything else we had been talking about, that it had nothing to do with the fact that his stepsister was my best friend and I was lying next to him wearing a mask. But I genuinely wanted to know what he thought about her."She is struggling with the idea of me and my dad," he said. "I understand why though. Her mum remarried quickly and moved someone into her house and she did not have much say in any of it. That would be hard for anyone." He paused. "She is not wrong to feel what she feels. She is just bxng a brad though and directing all her negative energy at the nearest available targets instead of making peace with the actual situation.""So she's upset wit

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   031: Getting to know each other

Avery's POVI was still coming down from an all time high caused by the series of mind blowing orgasms I received. My wig and mask were still very much in place and Liam's arm was still across my back, tracing all manner of shapes. I lay there for a moment and listened to his breathing and thought about what I had just told him.I was breaking my rules one by one each time I saw him. Why would I get personal and tell him things that he could use to find me?The information had come out before I could stop it. He had asked and I had answered reflexively and now I couldn't take it back. The strange thing was, I did not want to. I wanted to talk to him and tell him things about me because I was developing feelings for him. At least he still didn't know my real identity because that would be a disaster."Are you still awake," he asked after a few minutes of silence."Yeah," I said.He shifted slightly and I turned around to put my arm on his chest. I was lightly stroking his chest hair. T
