Lorraine's Pov

The air felt wrong tonight.

I couldn't explain it. One second I was locking up the office, keys jingling in my hand, and the next I had this crawling feeling on the back of my neck, like eyes were on me from somewhere I couldn't see.

I looked around. Nothing. Just the usual crowd, cars honking somewhere down the block, a couple arguing outside the coffee shop across the street.

Still, I drove faster than I needed to.

By the time I got home, my heart was pounding for no reason I c

Lorraine's PovThe car was quiet for the first few minutes, just the hum of the engine and the streetlights sliding across the windshield in slow streaks."So," Adrian said eventually, voice gentle, careful in that way he always was when he thought I was one wrong word away from breaking. "What happened back there?""Wrong place, wrong time," I said, staring out the window. I was trying so hard not to think about it. "Lorraine.""It's fine, Adrian." I dismissed abruptly. He didn't believe me. I could tell by the way his jaw tightened, the way his fingers flexed against the steering wheel. But he let it go, at least for a moment, the silence stretching thin between us until he finally asked the question I knew was coming."Who is he? That Callum"I went quiet. The thing is, I never told Adrian about my past. He knew almost nothing about me. I thought about lying, brushing it off the way I'd brushed off everything else tonight, but something about the exhaustion sitting in my bones ma

Lorraine's PovMy hands wouldn't stop shaking.I stood frozen against the wall, glass and splinters scattered across my floor, my mind still trying to process the sound of a bullet burying itself where my head had been seconds earlier. Callum crouched near the door, still tense, I could see he was trying to calm his wolf...OH MACE-"What is going on?" I demanded again, my voice cracking. "Callum, I swear to God—""I don't know," he said. And the worst part was, I didn'tknow if he was lying or not.Liam burst through the door moments later, eyes sweeping the room with a speed that wasn't normal, wasn't human. He and Callum exchanged a look loaded with things I couldn't decode."Check the perimeter," Callum said. "Find out who did this."Liam nodded once and moved to leave, but I caught his arm before he could."What is going on, Liam" I asked, my voice low, urgent. "Tell me something at least."Liam's jaw tightened. He glanced at Callum, waiting for permission I didn't understand the n

Callum's POV I couldn't meet Lorraine last night because as I was about to walk up, someone pulled up to her apartment.I watched the person come out slowly, and I recognised that face. Anna. She was in the city too? That made me lay low, I only wanted Lorraine to see me, not her friend. "You should've gone in anyway," Mace said now, low and unimpressed. "Instinct told you something was wrong. You ignored it for manners."I know."Don't do it again."I won't.I was here again the next morning, at her door step. I knocked once and waited. The door opened, and every rehearsed word I'd carried across disappeared.LorraineShe looked exactly like she was 7 years ago and nothing like it at the same time. Same dark hair, same sharp brown eyes, and lips.. My whole body reacted before my mind caught up. A pull low in my chest, sharp enough to steal my breath, like something starved finally catching the scent of food after years without it.Mace surged forward in my head, desperate, whining

I locked the door. Checked it twice. Told myself I was being paranoid. You're just tired, I thought. Long day. That's all.I dropped my bag by the door and sank onto the couch, and that was when everything from earlier finally caught up with me.Callum's son's face. The way his lips had trembled right before Liam picked him up.Please, I just want to find my momI pressed my palms against my eyes. OH LORRAINEHe's just a kid, probably six- seven years old, and I'd yelled at him li

Callum's PovThe human city hit different at night. Too many lights, buzz and not enough silence. My wolf hated it instantly. I had never fascinated the human world and now I'm forced here, because of this woman."Too loud," Mace grumbled the second we stepped off the jet. "Too many smells fighting each other. How does she live here?"She adapted. That's what humans do. "Adapt instead of fight, pathetic!" I said."She's not fully human."No. But she doesn't know think that either, not really.I pulled my jacket tighter and kept walking. No entourage. No announcement. Just me, Liam a few steps behind, and the kind of tension in my shoulders that came from being somewhere I had zero control over."Alpha, you're exposing yourself," Liam said under his breath as we moved through the crowd. His eyes kept scanning, the way they always did, cataloguing exits and threats out of habit. "No security detail, no pack backup. If anyone recognizes what you are—""I'd rather expose myself than bury

Callum's PovThe war didn't start with fire. It started with silence.I remember standing at the border of my late father's territory, watching three of our scouts get carried back in pieces. Not dead. But worse, marked. Someone wanted us to know they could have killed them and chose not to.That was the kind of enemy we were dealing with. Patient and cruel in a way that made your skin crawl before you even knew why."You're thinking about it again." Mace's voice rumbled low in my head.I have to."No. You don't. What's done is done." I ignored him and let the memory keep playing.Back then, Lorraine didn't have her wolf yet, still don't know if she does now. But she couldn't shift. Nothing to defend herself with except me. And I had a war on three fronts and enemies who specialized in finding exactly what you loved most and burning it to ash in front of you.My father had called me into his study the night everything changed. I still remember the smell of that room—old wood, whiske
