The day had come. The day I had heavily anticipated for years, the day Callum would announce me as his mate and Luna publicly. There were many dragonflies in my belly and lots of jumbled nerves. I paced around my room, thinking of whether he was going to show up. He hadn't replied to my last letter, which was a lot to take in. "Perhaps he wants to surprise you?" My subconscious whispered. I facepalmed myself, knowing Callum knew I was not too fond of surprises. I decided to get dressed and hope for the best, since today was also my birthday. Callum's favorite color was red, and it seemed like a befitting color to wear.Alpha Callum was the definition of sweet and fiery hot. He was perfect, the kind of man who knew how to push a lady's button, and he was mine alone.
I giggled at my thoughts, applying the final touches of my makeup and wearing the necklace that Callum had gifted me. He made with tourmaline crystals, which he had hunted by himself, and he had given the order to the best jeweler in the city. I heard the trumpet sound, indicating the arrival of some important guests. Was it Callum? My heartbeat sped up in anticipation and delight. I stepped out of my room and walked down the corridor to appear on a wide-span balcony overlooking the outdoor ballroom. Everything was just the way I wanted. The lights were dazzling, and the music was just right. Everything was terrific, but just one thing was left to complete my perfect day. Callum. The announcer looked up, and I nodded twice at him to signify my entry. "Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Miss Lorraine Slater of the SilverLake pack," He thundered. I walked gently down the stairs, gripping the stairwells and my eyes roaming around to see whether he had arrived. My heart fell with a twinge of disappointment. The waiter served me wine, and I moved around to welcome the guests to my party, all the while searching for him with my eyes. I was also looking for my best friend, Anna. "He isn't going to come," a part of me said in defeat. I sighed and continued greeting my guests. Many of them complimented my unusual style of color, congratulating me yet sympathizing with me. I could only smile.A loud commotion ensued, causing me to wonder what had caused it.
Could it be Callum? A slow smile graced my lips. "Announcing the grand Alpha, The great Callum, and his wife and the future Luna of the SilverLake pack, Lana," the announcer said. I must have heard wrong. My heart rate suddenly increased as I looked towards the entrance to see Callum in a black suit with his arm wrapped around a strange woman's waist. She was prettier and more elegant than I was. I looked in disbelief, and sheer betrayal as murmurs began to go round the room. "Luna? I thought Lorrraine was his mate," someone murmured "Well, that's a big surprise his mate was right her waiting for him," Others said. I had assumed that I was Callum's mate, yes I was. He had claimed me two years ago under the full moon. Our romance had flourished, and I had nurtured the hope that today would mark the culmination of our love story and the day he'd finally mark me to strengthen the bond. But what was going on right now? Was this a prank or perhaps a significant PR? I looked towards them again. He had taken glasses of wine for himself and Lana and was preparing to announce because he was clinking the glasses, perhaps to voice out my worst fears. "Ladies and gentlemen…" His deep voice reverberated around the hall. I glanced at him and then at Lana, wondering whether I was dreaming or this was happening. "I present to you the future Luna of your pack and my fiance, Lana." Instantly, I felt myself breaking down. There was a sharp pain in my chest that made it difficult for me to breathe. Anna came from nowhere to stand at my side immediately."Anna-" I muttered, my voice breaking. Sheheld onto me tightly, but it wasn't helping. I needed to speak to Callum.
I struggled to get to the front of the crowd and ignored the painful chattering of the group. He can't do this to me. He promised me forever. Why was Callum turning away from me when I did nothing? Maybe it was all a mistake. Why would Callum consider another woman and bring her in as his mate? A mix of betrayal, intense sadness, and anger spread through me. I struggled to keep down the bile rising in my throat or the tears threatening to spill from my eyes. We were supposed to get married, I would be Luna, and we would live happily with our five pups. What was going on?Lorraine's PovThe car was quiet for the first few minutes, just the hum of the engine and the streetlights sliding across the windshield in slow streaks."So," Adrian said eventually, voice gentle, careful in that way he always was when he thought I was one wrong word away from breaking. "What happened back there?""Wrong place, wrong time," I said, staring out the window. I was trying so hard not to think about it. "Lorraine.""It's fine, Adrian." I dismissed abruptly. He didn't believe me. I could tell by the way his jaw tightened, the way his fingers flexed against the steering wheel. But he let it go, at least for a moment, the silence stretching thin between us until he finally asked the question I knew was coming."Who is he? That Callum"I went quiet. The thing is, I never told Adrian about my past. He knew almost nothing about me. I thought about lying, brushing it off the way I'd brushed off everything else tonight, but something about the exhaustion sitting in my bones ma
Lorraine's PovMy hands wouldn't stop shaking.I stood frozen against the wall, glass and splinters scattered across my floor, my mind still trying to process the sound of a bullet burying itself where my head had been seconds earlier. Callum crouched near the door, still tense, I could see he was trying to calm his wolf...OH MACE-"What is going on?" I demanded again, my voice cracking. "Callum, I swear to God—""I don't know," he said. And the worst part was, I didn'tknow if he was lying or not.Liam burst through the door moments later, eyes sweeping the room with a speed that wasn't normal, wasn't human. He and Callum exchanged a look loaded with things I couldn't decode."Check the perimeter," Callum said. "Find out who did this."Liam nodded once and moved to leave, but I caught his arm before he could."What is going on, Liam" I asked, my voice low, urgent. "Tell me something at least."Liam's jaw tightened. He glanced at Callum, waiting for permission I didn't understand the n
Callum's POV I couldn't meet Lorraine last night because as I was about to walk up, someone pulled up to her apartment.I watched the person come out slowly, and I recognised that face. Anna. She was in the city too? That made me lay low, I only wanted Lorraine to see me, not her friend. "You should've gone in anyway," Mace said now, low and unimpressed. "Instinct told you something was wrong. You ignored it for manners."I know."Don't do it again."I won't.I was here again the next morning, at her door step. I knocked once and waited. The door opened, and every rehearsed word I'd carried across disappeared.LorraineShe looked exactly like she was 7 years ago and nothing like it at the same time. Same dark hair, same sharp brown eyes, and lips.. My whole body reacted before my mind caught up. A pull low in my chest, sharp enough to steal my breath, like something starved finally catching the scent of food after years without it.Mace surged forward in my head, desperate, whining
Lorraine's PovThe air felt wrong tonight.I couldn't explain it. One second I was locking up the office, keys jingling in my hand, and the next I had this crawling feeling on the back of my neck, like eyes were on me from somewhere I couldn't see.I looked around. Nothing. Just the usual crowd, cars honking somewhere down the block, a couple arguing outside the coffee shop across the street.Still, I drove faster than I needed to.By the time I got home, my heart was pounding for no reason I could point to. I locked the door. Checked it twice. Told myself I was being paranoid. You're just tired, I thought. Long day. That's all.I dropped my bag by the door and sank onto the couch, and that was when everything from earlier finally caught up with me.Callum's son's face. The way his lips had trembled right before Liam picked him up.Please, I just want to find my momI pressed my palms against my eyes. OH LORRAINEHe's just a kid, probably six- seven years old, and I'd yelled at him li
