Chapter Eight

"You haven't compensated the families?" Calvin asked a Beta, who stood in front of him. Today was his most dreaded day of the week. It was the day when his wisdom had to be used and stretched. He'd managed to solve a couple of problems from packs and he'd left the wolves satisfied. He was always tensed during this day.

"No, Calvin" replied the Beta.

The problem he faced now was with a family, who's child had been killed in a measly fight. The child wasn't able to shift into a wolf because he or she hadn't triggered their curse. The killer of the child had now triggered their curse.

In their world, humans who haven't began to shift into wolves had to trigger a curse. In order for them to do that, they had to kill someone. They had to kill either a human who hadn't began to shift, or a human who could shift into a wolf. It's called a curse because whenever a wolf newly began to shift, transforming during a full moon was very painful. The new wolf had to feel every bone in his or her body break and it caused excruciating agony. His or her sense would become heightened and he or she could hurt anyone who stood around, be it a wolf or human. No wolf could escape the full moon, so it was inescapable pain on every full moon.

"They refuse to be compensated" the Beta told him

"Why's that?" Some families who'd lost their loved ones due to murder had always acted that way, at first.

"I can't explain. We've tried but the mother of the child who died says her only compensation was bringing her child back to life"

Calvin let out a frustrated sigh, he'd been through this before. He'd have to summon the mother to his domain, the next week, but that'll just increase his work load. The last time he'd done this, his mate, Alexis was there to keep him company. Her presence alone, eased the burden he felt, he didn't really expect her to come to him now because she was still recovering and she literally had a memory loss. He'd just have to get through this alone.

"I summon the bereaved family. Tell them to meet me in my next session. They...." He trailed off when he saw someone enter. Who the hell was that? No one dared to come in while he was attending to his pack.... He looked closer. It was Alexis! She appeared now as if she just materialised from his thoughts.

"Alpha Calvin...." He heard the beta call him but he wasn't listening. His mate looked gorgeous. It looked as if she hadn't escaped from a traumatic event and she was just normal.... no, different! But in a good way. Suck on that, Raymond! He thought in momentary triumph.

He watched her shyly smiling as she approached him. Seeing her alone was making his heart palpitate.

"Good day, Calvin" she bowed slightly as she came next to him.

Acting on impulse, he pulled her swiftly, she let out a gasp as she landed on him.

"What--- what are you doing?" She whispered, straight faced. She seemed embarrassed by his open display of affection, in the midst of the Beta and some wolves he attended to.

"I missed you" he said as he grabbed her waist and made her sit on him. Still embarrassed, she tried to stand up, but he didn't let her.

"Sit. Please"

"But ---" she protested

"Please" his gaze bored deep into hers. He usually used this tactic with Alexis, in an effort to cajole her to submission, so he tried it now.

"Okay" she whispered. It worked on her. Maybe she hadn't forgotten about that one.

"Like I said, I summon the bereaved family, if you can't convince her to accept my apologies and compensation, then tell her to come to me. I'll do better in convincing her" he said to the Beta.

"Yes, alpha" the beta replied

"Any other problem?"

"No, Calvin. You've solved all of them for today. I'll come with the family in our next meeting " the beta said

"You can go now"

"Thanks" said the beta, then he left with the other wolves he came with as they were escorted out by the sentinels.

He and Alexis were alone to themselves now.

"Hi" he said to her "how are you feeling?"

"I'm doing well " he noticed as she looked down, and she had her hands balled into tight fists.

"Hey," he called as he held her hand, she immediately loosened the fist. "You can tell me if you feel uncomfortable"

"No, I'm --- I'm okay. I just feel hot, that's all"

"No, you're not okay. I won't rush you or pressure you to reciprocate my love " he said

"I don't need to rush you, you'll fall for me again, in a month. I can guarantee that" he bragged smugly and felt happy as she stared at him wide eyed, then burst into laughter.

"You can do that?" She laughed

"Yes. I've got charms, you know"

"Really?" She continued laughing and he joined her. His heart warmed, his mate was back and safe and he couldn't wish for anything else.

Their magical moment was put to a halt when a knock was heard on the door. It was an omega.

"Come in, talk and leave" he instructed

"Good day, Alpha Calvin, I was sent to announce the arrival of your brother Raymond and his escort, Amber "

He froze in his seat. Raymond dared to show up now of all times? Well, he was about to meet a huge shocker.

"Tell the sentinels to escort them in " he said and the omega left instantly.

"Hey, I need you to leave." He said to Alexis.

"Why?"

"I want your appearance before them to be a shock"

She stood up from him quickly. He didn't want her to, but he didn't have a choice, for that moment.

"Look, Alexis, I don't want them to know what happened to you. I don't want them to know that you have a memory loss" he said

"Okay" she replied

"So can you act? Like pretend you're fine "

"Sure." She forced a smile

"Go and meet Dante" he said as he watched her leave.

Damn, he didn't want to let her out of his sight but he just had to, for now.
