Chapter 3

Penulis: Madam Fenghuo
The day before I left, I had finished packing everything.

I planned to leave first thing in the morning.

That evening, Umberto showed up as usual with two slices of cake, one for me and one for Beth.

Beth's eyes lit up. She didn't even bother with a fork, leaning in to take a bite straight off the plate. Cream smeared across her lips.

"This is so good. Blueberry is my favorite."

I stared at the cake on my plate but didn't touch it.

When I first met Umberto, he smiled and said we were alike. He was the youngest son in his family too.

His parents only ever noticed his older brothers. He was always the one left out. From then on, we were always together.

Then he came looking for me and met Beth. From that day on, there was always a third person in our games.

Even so, I was still willing to hang out with him.

Because he would buy two identical pieces of candy and prepare two birthday presents.

But little by little, that changed.

Both birthday gifts became princess dresses in Beth's favorite style.

Just like this blueberry cake.

Umberto frowned. "What's wrong? I went out of my way to get this. Aren't you even going to try it?"

I watched Beth finish hers, then slid mine across the table. "I don't like blueberries, and I'm lactose intolerant."

Beth was the one who loved blueberries.

Umberto paused and cleared his throat. "I could've sworn you used to eat blueberries."

"Are you still upset about the castle we bought for Beth yesterday?"

"We didn't have enough money for both places, so we bought Beth's first. Besides, you don't get to demand a gift. Why are you so angry?"

My face went still as I listened.

So the castle had been a joint purchase between him and my brother.

I used to eat blueberries because I didn't want to hurt his feelings, but I had told him more than once that I didn't like them.

None of them had paid attention.

He only knew I was lactose intolerant because Beth had once used it as an excuse to claim the cake he bought for me.

But he had already forgotten. All he remembered was that Beth liked blueberry cake.

I wasn't angry about the castle, and I wasn't hurt because he had forgotten I hated blueberry cake.

I was simply exhausted. I was done being the fourth wheel in their little game.

That evening, our parents held a farewell banquet at the Family hall. It was supposed to introduce us formally and announce which businesses Beth would be taking over.

I waited at the estate gates for three hours. The driver never came.

So I went back to my room and finished organizing my things, including the coming-of-age gift my grandmother had prepared for me before she passed.

She was the only person in the entire family who had ever paid attention to me. I didn't open the box, just placed it in my suitcase.

Then Mother's call came.

"What is wrong with you? Look at the time!"

"The driver didn't come," I said quietly.

Silence held for a few seconds before Mother's voice softened. "The driver had to pick up Beth's gown. Call a car and get here yourself."

She hung up.

I looked down at my old dress and worried whether my parents would scold me for it.

Sure enough, by the time I reached the Family hall, they were parading Beth from guest to guest and explaining which businesses she would run.

The moment they saw what I was wearing, their faces darkened.

They didn't call me over. Didn't so much as say hello. Since they clearly had no intention of introducing me, I found a seat and sat down.

A little while later, Beth turned and looked my way.

I noticed her smile at once, her eyes crinkling. But more importantly, around her neck hung a dazzling aquamarine necklace.

I shot to my feet. That was the coming-of-age gift from my grandmother!

The Don looked at me. "Are these men with your family?""Yes." I nodded. I knew perfectly well that their recklessness today would bring them serious trouble."I don't like having my peace disturbed. I'm sorry." I stood and bowed deeply. "I can't accept your offer to run the operation. I want to stay here."My refusal clearly left the Don disappointed. He stood, pulled his leather gloves back on, gave me a long, measured look, and smiled."If you change your mind, you can come find me anytime."He was about to leave when his gaze fell on the two men on the floor. He asked me, "Want me to take care of them?"I thought about it. There were many ways to handle it.The simplest, bloodless option was enough. I had already made peace with the past. None of it mattered to me anymore.Seeing that I didn't say anything, the Don smiled faintly and motioned for his men to let them go. Then he left with his bodyguards. The moment the Don left, my brother reverted to his old self. "Tell me exactly

Over the next few days, he didn't leave. But he didn't bother me either. He just stood outside the coffee shop every day, rain or shine, keeping his vigil.Less than a week later, my brother took up the spot beside him. He still carried himself with the same haughty air, but his eyes darted away when he saw me.Umberto had to shove my brother before he would come near me. When he finally did, he sneered, "I thought you'd run off to do something important. But this pathetic little shop is all you've got? Let's see how long it lasts."I didn't dignify him with an answer. I gave him one look and walked around him. That only made him angrier. He stepped into my path. "Adele, lose the attitude!""The one I have. Don't like it? Don't look at me."His hand shook with rage. He raised it to slap me, but Umberto caught his arm and warned him to control himself.Only then did he rein himself in."You think you're so impressive, don't you? How did this Family ever raise an ungrateful brat like you

By noon, I had reached a tiny town at the far northern tip of Sardinia.Trees and vines lined the asphalt road like strokes of green paint. I crossed the town square and found the landlady I had contacted in advance.I rented a house. After the paperwork was done and I had moved in, I felt a lightness I had never known before. At last, there was no one shouting in my ear. I opened my window each morning to birdsong. The landlady noticed the bruises on my legs and brought me ointment. After all those years, a stranger's kindness was the first real warmth I had felt.I had saved plenty of money while studying abroad. Two weeks later, once my injuries had healed, I rented the empty storefront downstairs.I opened a coffee shop and adopted a little black cat.I planted wild climbing roses by the door. They were nothing like Beth's stiff, showy red roses or her style of decor. The girl next door came to do her homework in my shop every day. Whenever she got stuck, she asked me for help.Aft

The elder who had praised Beth seconds earlier changed her tune instantly. She scoffed. "And here I thought Beth was impressive. So it was favoritism all along, while the truly gifted daughter was treated like garbage.""Exactly. We all saw it.""Beth, that necklace you're wearing, it's Adele's, isn't it?"Beth ducked behind Mother, instinctively lowering her chin to hide the necklace at her throat. My brother still hadn't recovered from the photograph."Impossible! There has to be a mistake.""She never even had a decent tutor! She never came to the library with us. How could she possibly have won all those awards?"I'd never had a tutor because our parents only thought of Beth. It had never occurred to them that I might need help too.But without that option, all I could do was push myself as hard as I possibly could. As for the library, they never invited me anywhere during our years abroad, not to parties and not to the library. It was always just the three of them.I was the one l

My parents were still at the banquet with Beth, drinking with the Family elders. They bragged to everyone about the businesses Beth was taking over and her plans going forward, making sure to ask each person to lend a hand. The elders were delighted with Beth. "That girl has intelligence written all over her. The Family's future will be in your hands."My brother stood beside them, beaming with pride."Now I've got a capable partner. Together we'll take the Family's business worldwide.""If Beth ends up inheriting Father's position someday, I'd be happy to serve as her right hand. Whatever makes Beth happy."Everyone was still basking in the moment when a man in a razor-sharp suit strode into the banquet hall, his expression grim. Several guests recognized him at once.He was the underboss of Cagliari's Cassano Family, the syndicate our clan had once approached for a partnership only to be dismissed as too small-time.The Cassano operation spanned the globe. Grandmother had prepared two heirlooms, one for each of us.Mine was an aquamarine necklace, while Beth's was a ruby rose brooch. Both were one-of-a-kind Ricci Family heirlooms. But Beth had gambled hers away on horse races while we were abroad. My eyes stung with tears. "You stole my necklace!"I lunged for the clasp.Beth backed away, and Mother immediately stepped in to block me."What the hell are you doing?! This is a formal event. Have you no manners!"Mother's voice was razor-sharp.I shouted back, "You stole my necklace!"Mother shot back, "What do you mean, your things? Everything here belongs to the Family!""Grandmother gave it to me!" My voice rose.It was the only thing in that house that belonged to me alone, the last piece of Grandmother I had left."It still belongs to this Family. Why are you shouting?" Mother pulled Beth aside and smoothed her mussed hair."You don't need to dress up for anything. You don't get to decide what happens with the Family's belongings."I s
