Chapter 6

Rachel's POV

I jumped and rushed to my window. Unfortunately, I moved too fast. The world seemed to spin in all directions. I grabbed the windowsill to steady myself.

"Woah..." I groan. I shut my eyes, and I waited for the world to go still again. All of a sudden, the piercing blue eyes I saw in my dreams flashed before me again.

"Fuck!" I startled and opened my eyes again. "What the fuck is going on!" I yelled out.

Jessica must have really did a number on me. Great. The last thing I need is brain damage from this. I would never hear the end of it with Jessica. Worse, Beth would continue to tell everyone it's another disability I have from not being born to fated mates.

Lost in my thoughts again, I almost forgot why I was at the window. As soon as the thought registered I heard another scream. I opened my window and was hit with the strong smell of smoke. I cough and back up.

After a few forced coughs, I blink to clear my vision and I peered back out the window and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

I saw people from my pack scrambling around. The screams were coming from different directions. I could hear more and more screams as people started running towards my house.

I tried to peer beyond the buildings to see where the smoke was coming from. It looked like the cloud was being blown from the North. Maybe one of the houses caught fire? If so, why is so many people fleeing and heading towards the packhouse?

Our packhouse sits about 150 yards away from my house. I remember my dad picking it out because he wanted to make sure that if ever there was an emergency, his family had the best chance of reaching safety first.

I watched men run north while she wolves carrying children darted south. They ran through our yard and headed straight for the pack house. But why?

"ROGUES ARE CLOSING IN!!! EVERY WOMAN AND CHILD TO THE FUCKING PACK HOUSE NOW!" Screamed one of the patrol guards.

Rogues?? Terror shoot through my body. I turn to run for my door and stumble down the hallway.

"DAD! BETH! JESSICA!" I scream out. But no answer. I dart across the hall to Jessica's room and bust through her door.

Her blinding pink walls, pink bed decor, and silver tassels hanging from her ceiling greet me. But that's it. No Jessica.

I fly down the stairs and bolt into the main room, once again screaming out their names. Still no one answers.

I run through every room on the bottom floor. Including the closets, but they aren't here.

The screaming outside is getting louder and louder. My heart is racing, and I begin to panic. I tried to block out the thought that they left me behind. Maybe they went outside to help. After all,. My father is the Beta. That makes more sense, I tell myself.

Everyone here, including me and even the children, are trained in combat. No one expects children to fight, but it's a safety measure to buy them time, and their skills give them something to build on as they grow.

Everyone has a job during an emergency. Patrol and men go towards the danger. Women and children take shelter in the packhouse. I must get to the packhouse.

I rush to the mud room to grab my tennis shoes. I throw myself to the floor and scramble to get them on. I just got ready to lace my last shoe when I hear someone burst through the front door.

My heart stops and I hold my breath.

Who is here with me?
