LILYâS POV
Even though my arms throbbed painfully and I felt exceedingly weak, I continued to scrub the floor for hours.
Stopping for a break was not an option; if I tried to rest, I would suffer further punishment and torment.
Well, this was not a big deal for me because I was already used to living this way.
I was an omega and likely never would be part of the lives of Alphas and lunas.
âLily, come here right now!â Marthaâs voice cut through, bringing me back to reality. She was the head maid and one of my abusers. âThe prince is going to get engaged today and you are making me late with your slowness.â
âIâm so sorry. I will work faster,â I said with a slight nod, hoping she would make an issue out of this, which she didnât.
My biggest fear had finally come to pass. By midnight, Alpha Darius would be getting engaged to Selena, an influential Alphaâs daughter, and it broke my heart a great deal.
At the same time, I would be turning eighteen.
My fingers trembled as I turned to see my stepsister, Maya, dressed in an elegant gown, with her blonde hair curled to perfection. She wrinkled her nose at me like I was something disgusting.
"Sorry," I muttered, taking a step back.
Maya had always hated me. Ever since my father, a disgraced Beta, had been executed for treason, my stepmother had ensured I was treated like an outsider in my own home.
"I don't know why they let you serve here," she sneered. "You should be grateful we didnât throw you out like the trash you are."
I folded my fingers into a fist, forcing myself to remain silent.
"Come, Maya," a feminine voice cooed. "Donât waste your breath on someone so beneath us."
That was Selenaâs voice.
She walked into the room, looking all beautiful, regal, and powerful, she was the perfect match that was chosen for Darius.
There was always disdain in her eyes when she looked at me, she hated me and knew it. I wanted to return the hate, but I couldnât. Not when she had everything I never would.
"Are you ready for tonight?" Maya asked her excitedly.
"Of course," Selena smirked. "After all, I will be Luna soon. The rightful Luna."
Her words made me feel a pain that I thought I could control.
I bent my head, trying to get out of there, but just as I turned to leave, I felt a strong grip on my wrist and my breath hitched at the contact.
"You better be careful, Lily. I have been hearing rumors that you have a crush on my man," she whispered. "A girl like you shouldnât be caught staring at the future Alpha because you can never fit into the position of standing next to him as Luna.â
I swallowed hard, yanking my wrist from her grasp.
"I wouldnât dream of it," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Selena tilted her head, studying me. Then, slowly, she smirked. "Weâll see about that."
âThereâs nothing to see. Go and be with your man, no need for insecurity.â
My breath hitched.
A delicate, glowing mark had appeared on my skinâa swirling pattern of silver and moonlight, intricate and breathtaking.
My fingers trembled as I traced the design.
âThe markâŠâ I whispered.
It was the mark of an unborn Luna. The symbol of a destined mate.
Dariusâs mate.
A choked laugh bubbled from my throat, my heart pounding wildly. Fate had chosen me. Me. Not the noble daughters who vied for his attention. Not the polished princesses who fluttered around him at court.
Me.
Excitement surged through my veins. I needed to tell him.
I threw on a cloak and rushed out, the chill of the morning barely registering as I ran. The palace grounds were still quiet, save for a few early risers. My feet barely touched the ground, my mind already painting the moment Iâd show him.
I could see it now, his sharp features softening with realization, his lips curling into that rare, breathtaking smile. âLily,â heâd say, voice thick with emotion. âItâs you. Itâs always been you.â
And then heâd pull me into his arms, and kiss me.
I reached the palace courtyard, breathlessly. The festival banners fluttered in the morning breeze, the golden fabric catching the sunlight. My eyes darted across the grand yard, searching for himâ
And then I saw him. He was dressed in an ornate royal suit, standing at the altar.
Beside Selene.
The world tilted.
No.
No, no, no.
I took a step back, the stone path cold beneath my bare feet.
"DariusâŠ" His name slipped past my lips, barely a breath, drowned by the hum of the crowd.
He was holding her hand. His fingers curled around hers with quiet possession.
The priest spoke words I couldn't hear. The audience watched in reverent silence.
And then Darius opened his mouth to speak but I quickly rushed in, trying to stop him, to reveal to everyone that I was his rightful mate.
âThis marriage cannot happen!â I screamed at the top of my voice and immediately cornered all the attention on me.
Everybodyâs eyes were now on me and it made me shake in fear. I hadnât thought about this part.
âWhat the hell do you think you are doing?â Maya said from behind me. âYou better come up with a sick joke to wrap this shit up and get out of here, Selene is mad already!â
I scoffed, of course, this was the only thing she was good at, dismissing me, treating me like trash, and standing for her friend, instead of me, her flesh and blood.
I ignored it and looked back at the crowd, then at Darius. âSelene cannot marry Darius, she is not the destined Luna, I can proâŠâ
Before I could continue, Selene charged at me. I wanted to open my mouth and speak but she dragged me by my sleeve and in the process, my top yanked it down, exposing my upper arm.
My stomach dropped as the tattoo of the future Luna glowed before the eyes of everyone.
Gasps filled the hall and the room seemed to freeze.
"What is that?" Maya shrieked.
Selena's eyes darkened. "It seems we have a problem."
From people curious to know how I had the Luna mark to rumors of me being a crook and a cheat like my father, filled the hall.
It all happened so quickly and the next thing I knew, guards seized me, yanking me backward as Selena turned toward the double doors leading to the throne room.
"Darius," she called sweetly. "Thereâs something you need to see."
I was panicking so badly. This couldnât be happening.
Before I could protest, the guards dragged me forward, forcing me through the doors of the royal court.
Darius was standing at the center, next to his father, the Alpha King. I couldnât tell if I was sure but he looked scared and concerned.
"What's going on?" he asked. âWhy did you pull off such a stunt?â
Selena stepped forward, pretending to be concerned. "No need to keep asking her questions, we already found the truth." She motioned for the guards, and one of them grabbed my arm, yanking my sleeve down again.
Darius stared at the tattoo for a while, and his entire body became still. I waited for him to say something, just anything and soon, he finally spoke with a cold voice.
"What truth?"
Selena sighed dramatically. "It seems this low-life maid has been planning on how to scam her way into the family and enjoy royalty. The tattoo is fake and we were able to find out from the details, look closely and you will see that it is not healed. She recently got the mark from a tattoo artist, to use and deceive us. And before she can think of denying it, we found the artist.â
The words came like a heavy blow. None of it was true, she was lying.
Darius's expression was hard to read but he kept looking between me and the mark. "That can't be right."
My throat became tight. âSelene is lying, trust me."
I tried to defend myself but Selena let out a smile. "How about we call the artist who drew the tattoo on her.â
I didn't know what I expected him to do, maybe try to defend me, question the truth, or anything. He did none of them, instead he decided to shatter me completely with his next words.
âThere is no need for that. I can never even make her Luna. Her father was a traitor and she is just an omega, a servant. So I, Darius of the Moonshade Pack, reject you, Lily, as my mate."
The moment the words left his lips, a sharp pain knotted in my chest. I gasped, doubling over as agony ripped through my body, tearing at my soul.
Tears blurred my vision as Selena wrapped her arms around him, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
"You made the right choice, my love," she whispered to him and he hugged her, not sparing a glance at me.
I fell to the floor, feeling broken and rejected.
Pain, that was all I was made for. Nothing else defined me.
I heard laughter, hushed tones, and mumbles.
âHow dreamlike and pathetic of her.â
âImbecile!â
âA scam just like her father.â
âPayback for all this was due.â
I didnât care about what they said, the only person I paid attention to was Darius.
He stood there, void of emotion as he watched me writhe on the floor. He had no look of concern and there was no form of hesitation. He had spoken those words so easily, so carelessly, like I had never meant anything to him or existed.
I forced myself to look up, but the tears made my vision blur. Selena was pressed against his side, her arms wrapped possessively around him. She looked down at me with amusement, a slow, satisfied smirk curving her lips.
"You should have stayed in your place, Lily," she murmured, just loud enough for me to hear. "Now, youâre nothing."
Nothing.
I had always been treated like less than everyone else. But this was worse.
"Lily Astor," the Alpha Kingâs voice boomed, cutting through my haze of pain. "You are hereby stripped of all titles and privileges within this pack. From this moment forward, you will serve in the lowest rankânothing more than a palace slave."
A sharp gasp escaped me. No.
My gaze snapped to Darius, desperate for him to do something to stop this but he remained silent.
"Guards, take her away," the King ordered.
I barely had time to process his words before rough hands grabbed my arms, yanking me to my feet. My knees buckled from the pain, but they didnât care. They dragged me across the grand hall like I was trash, shoving me toward the servantâs quarters.
I di
dn't fight them.
I was too broken to resist.
As they hauled me away, I stole one last glance at Darius.
Dariusâs POVI stood frozen, watching Lily getting dragged forward, her wrists bound in iron shackles. I could see that she was in pain but she did not fight, nor did she scream. She simply stared at me, her silence more damning than any curse she could have spoken.I could have stopped this.I could have fought for her.But to do so would mean defying my father, the King. It would mean breaking my arranged marriage to Princess Selena, abandoning my title, and forfeiting my claim to the crown. It would mean disgrace upon my family, my honor, my birth, my future. So I did nothing. My heart gripped as the palace guards led Lily down, the love of my life was gone and I had to let go. Selena and I finally got back to the chambers to celebrate our marriage night but my mind was away, it was still on Lilyâs ordeal. Selena leaned in, her breath warm against my ear as she whispered, âYouâre thinking about her, arenât you?âI stiffened. âI donât know what you mean.âShe chuckled, though th
Lilyâs POVMy fingers rubbed on my lips, as I kept on rolling in bed, finding it hard to sleep. I kept on thinking about the kiss. Why did Darius kiss me? Was he remembering? The way his wolf reacted to me, the way his fingers brushed my skin like he knew me, the way he kissed me. I was glad and sad about it at the same time. What if he happened to reject me again? No, maybe I just had to avoid him, instead of getting myself hurt a second time.I wouldnât be able to survive it.The morning came too soon, and I forced myself to act like nothing happened. The halls were silent as I made my way toward the kitchen. The sun had barely risen, and most of the palace was still asleep.I exhaled in relief. This was the only time I felt at peace before the chaos of the day began, but my relief didn't last long because the moment I turned back, I collided with someone.Hard. I stumbled back, the basket slipping from my grasp as the contents inside it fell out."Not again! Watch where you're goi
Lilyâs POVI walked slowly inside the room as I closed the door gently behind me. I knew Alpha Darius' stare was on me as I looked up at him. He was seated at the edge of the King-sized bed placed in the right corner of the big room, close to a large window that flooded the room with rays from the moonlight which made the room bright. I couldnât help but admire the beauty of the room, the room was neatly arranged as an Alphaâs room should look like. I never had the opportunity to enter the room ever since Alpha Darius moved in after his fatherâs death. I knew life wouldnât have been the same if he hadnât lost his memories during the war which led to the killing of his family. I walked closer towards the bed as I pressed my feet against the soft carpet covering the floor. We looked at each other in silence for a while before I finally lowered my gaze to the floor as I tried to figure out why he invited me to his chambers. My heart began to beat fast as he walked closer to me, and my mi
Lilyâs POVI stood dumbfounded as Alpha Darius released my face from his grip. I looked at Selene and saw her eyes burning in anger. That was when it dawned on me that what I was actually avoiding had happened. I knew she was going to punish me by making life in the palace more miserable for me than it was before. I stood confused for a while as Selene looked at us in silence as my heart pondered on whether I should run out the room or remain inside. She let go of the door knob as she banged the door angrily behind her, the room vibrated and the windows shooked from the impact of the door on the frame tightly fixed on the wall. She charged towards us as though she was going to pounce on me, and my wolf growled silently as though it sensed that all wasnât well. I knew Alpha Darius would never allow her to touch me, not when he was right there with me.âI have warned you to always knock on the door and wait for my response before entering my room Selene. How dare you barge into my roo
Darius POVLilly already out of the room, I could only imagine how she'll felt after being attacked so harshly by Selene who doesn't seem to no longer know her place within the walls of the palace,My eyes fixed on Selene as she walked up to me with an angry face staring at me without even a blink. âWhat's that about? Why is that lowlife in the same room with you?â. She asked with a firm gaze at me as I stared at her,âWhat are you talking about? She's my maid so of course, she's got every reason for her to be here, why the constant complaint?â, I asked with a calm voice, moreover Lilly was no only here and Selene was able to control her rage and did nothing more,My eyes still fixed on Selene as she kept on rumbling about what she thinks had transpired between myself and Lilly, it wasn't a good thing. Selene wasn't willing to backed down with her voice getting louder,âShe shouldn't be trusted, Darius! Although it might not look at it, but I'm telling you now that the girl is off no
Lilly POVI was still unable to sleep and kept rolling on the bed, severally, the thought of Darius kissing me so vivid in my head, I could feel his lips on mine as I placed my hands on my lip,There was a bit of joy in me knowing that I had shared a kiss with Darius, something that I had always wanted and someone I've longed to be with,It was just a few years back that we were separated, with me going to jail after being framed and Darius getting engaged with someone he doesn't love or share even a bit of feelings with,Selene acting all arrogant each time she sees me and Darius, how I wish I were as strong and powerful just like other strong warriors, then dealing with Selene wouldn't have become a problem then,The cold that had filled my skin made my entire body to be weak as I spent days in the dungeon, which was very unfair, âWould things have been different had I confessed my feelings to Darius on time?â. I thought, still laying in the bed,Alpha Darius, someone I had longed
Darius POVI opened my eyes and the first thing that came to my mind were the unanswered questions about who Lily really is. Everything about her had been bothering me for a while and I couldnât take it anymore. I tossed and turned on my bed in frustration. âI need to confront her and get her to tell me everything she knows,â I mumbled. I stood up from the bed and grabbed one of my robes from the closet wearing it as I walked towards the door. I strode out of my room, my feet pressing against the soft carpet as I climbed down the stairs, heading to Lilyâs room. The morning sunlight casted long shadows on the walls which made the hallways bright and the cool breeze blew my robe as it flowed behind me. Chatters from the maids and guards filled the air as they moved around the big palace busy with their various chores. As I walked down the hallways, the soft murmur of a group of maids gathered a few rooms away from Seleneâs room drew my attention. They were talking in hushed voices. I
Lilly POVI stood, unable to say anything as Darius went back leaving me behind, the forest was awfully quiet, which wasnât at all comfortable for me to stay alone. I hissed and looked around, surrounded by tall trees as I began to hear the flap of bird wings, more than one, and it was due to my wolf instinct.âHow could he go without even looking back, even for a bit? Have had to go through a lot these past few days because of him, and yet I am the one who ends up getting punished for itâ.I murmured with an unhappy face. Darius begins to get more curious, which wouldnât do him any good. âHow long would I be able to keep lying to him? He is surely going to find out someday⊠but until then I'll have to keep lying to himâ.The forest began to get more quiet as the sounds of the birds slowly went down, and it had been the one making me a little comfortable in the forest as I felt surrounded by others. The thought of my young age popped into my head, when dad had brought me out with him
Seleneâs POVI stood rooted to the spot when it dawned on me that the healer and the guards returned to the palace safely. My men were nowhere to be found. I had paid the men from Trevorâs Den a huge amount of money to carry out the attack perfectly. âWhat could have happened?â I thought. I tried my best to keep a straight face as the healer approached the palace. I was shocked to see that the healer was very young. Darius looked so happy as though he had won a jackpot when he saw them. He kept chanting âThank you moon goddess, thank you moon goddess. I quickly entered my room unsure what to do as I pace up and down around the room. I wondered why all my plans kept failing. The men had promised me that they would try all they could to stop the healers from coming to the palace. But they arrived looking unscathed as though there was no obstacle during their journey. I figured that I had to go to the Trevorâs and confirm what happened and why their mission failed. But I didnât kno
Darius POVThe guards arrived with the healer putting a smile on my face as I stared at them walking closer to me. The look on my face was filled with smile just seeing them.âFinally, Lilly will be fineâ, I thought with a smile on my face as I stared at them.Luke walked up to me with the healer who was not what I had expected, he was a young kid who was very well vast in medicine and could be called a sage doctor given how good his skills were.Claudia brought the healer closer, who with a smile was just staring at me as we both locked eyes together.âYou must be the healer, right?â I asked curiously.âYes I am, are you surprised? Don't I look like one?â The healer asked with a light smile on his face,I chuckled at his questioned as it was precisely what I thought, he didn't seem like the doctor considering how he looks and, moreover, who knows what his age is.I looked around with the crowd all cheering for Luke and Claudia that successfully brought the doctor to the palace. Furth
Selene POVI got to my room with an unhappy face after Darius had successfully got me angry, the look on his face shown he was distressed about Lilly, I could clearly see the change in his behaviors.Lilly had been laying unconscious for a week now, although she isn't dead yet. I wish I could just strangle her with my bore hand until she runs exhausted.Darius still hasn't remembered who Lilly is to him, but, he's way of caring for her seems usual, it's like he had remembered and kept it to himself. Lilly is supposed to be dead if not for that use of poison that doesn't seem to be working.âHow could he find such a healer? I can't let things slip from my hand this time!â I thought and rushed out of the room, headed straight to the kitchen.Furthermore, I arrived in the kitchen only to meet other maids already on duties, the look on their faces as they set their eyes on me shown they weren't pleased with me.Furthermore, I chuckled and walked into the kitchen and began looking around f
Dariusâ POVAs the Lukewarm water poured on my body from the shower washing away the soap I used to scrub my body, my mind flashed back to all the dreams I had before Lily was poisoned. âCould there be something about Lily that Selene is hiding from me?â I thought. I walked out of the bathroom a few minutes later. I cleaned my body with a clean white towel I placed on the bed before I entered the bathroom. I walked to the closet and grabbed a blue robe with a simple design. My eyes fell on the plate of food on the medium-sized table in my room as I wore the robe. I uncovered the plate and took three spoonfuls of the food and covered it immediately. I needed to go check on Lily whilst I waited for the guards to return with the healer. I walked briskly to Lilyâs room with my robe flowing behind me. Conversations in hushed tones were reduced within the palace walls ever since Selene threatened to punish anyone who mentioned anything about the poison. As I opened the door, I was surpr
Dariusâ POVMy mood had been down ever since the doctor told me that nothing could be done to save Lily. My mood was lifted when Lucas broke the news about the healer who could cure Lily of the poison. It was as though a heavy weight was lifted from my chest.âGet me Claudia and Luke. I need them to escort this guard to the healerâs town.â I said to Lucas. âWhat about me and Damien?â He asked, looking at me in confusion. âIâll be needing the two of you around the palace. Luke and Claudia are the ones I can trust after the two of you.â âI have heard you, my lord.â Lucas answered as he turned to leave immediately. âAre you sure about what you just said young man?â I asked the guard again as I looked at him closely. âYes, my lord. Iâm very sure.â He answered as he bowed his head. Different thoughts ran through my mind as I reminisced over everything that had happened for the past few days. From Alpha Lucien coming to threaten me and Lily battling her life for days.I was still conf
Author's POVThe look on the doctor's face changed as Darius stared at him, He could tell that the doctor didn't bring any good news from his side. âCome-on, doc, tell me, were you able to get the cure?â, Darius asked with my eyes wide open.Lucas, unable to stay calm after hearing the Darius' words and seeing how worried he was, then tapped the doctor on his shoulder.âWhere you are able to get the cure?â, Lucas asks curiously,The doctor sighed deeply. âNo I wasn't, finding a cure for her is very hard, who so ever poisoned her surely needs her deadââIt's a very deadly poison, and she's only alive due to her wolf side, she's a forceful lady, else other's would have died within secondsâ.âWhat the hell are you saying, doctor? How useless can you be, huh? All I asked was for you to find out a cure for her Poison and yet, you came back here empty-handed?â, Darius asked angrily in a loud voice. The rage in Darius began to come out as he immediately held the doctor by the neck and pushe
Darius POV,The thought of what the doctor said filled my head, not being able to get a cure for Lilly, I could see her just laying unconscious unable to say or do anything.I stood staring at her with Selene standing there worried also, the look on her face shows she was worried about Lilly, which wasn't normal. I turned facing the doctor with an unhappy face.âCan't anything be done at all? I'm sure surely that something can work," I asked with a worried tone.Although the doctor had repeatedly said that no nothing can be done and even finding a cure would be very difficult because it's a rare poison, I had hope that she'll be okay.Selene seeing my state, then walked up closer to the doctor with an unhappy face.âCome-on doc, how sure are you that nothing can be done to treat her Poison?â Selene asked with a calm voice.âIt's just like I have to the alpha ma'am. Currently, nothing can be done, but I do believe that with more time, hopefully a cure can be foundâ, The doctor replied,
Seleneâs POVI was glad that my plan worked out when I heard the maid scream out loud. I quickly tried to compose myself so Iâd not look suspicious to anyone. I smiled inwardly when I saw Alpha Darius rushing to the kitchen. I had secretly ordered one of the maids to pour the poison I got from a neighboring pack in Lilyâs drink. The poison will destroy her organs one after the other, and destroy her blood. The seller had told me that even the best healer wonât be able to cure her. âWhatâs the dose? I mean how much could kill her in no time?â I asked the seller as he handed me a small bottle containing a black liquid.âHalf of the content will destroy her in no time. You can use half of it and keep the remaining for future purposes.â He replied with a devilish smile on his face.I had secretly set out of the palace on the day I caught Lily in Dariusâ room to the neighboring pack. I lied to Darius that I was going to visit a friend. I decided that the day of the event would be a great
Dariusâ POVâHelp! Someone help!!â The screaming continued as everyone began to rush towards the direction where the voice was coming from.My heart began to beat faster as the screaming continued. When I saw the person who was screaming breathlessly, I figured she was one of the palace maids.âWhat is the problem? Why are you causing commotion in the middle of a party?â I asked as I walked closer to her. She bent down a little with her hands placed on her knees as though she was trying to catch her breath. âIâm sorry my lord. Itâs Lily. I donât know whatâs wrong with her, she just collapsed in the kitchen.â She said as her voice trembled. âWhatâŠ? She collapsed? What happened to her? Why?â I questioned her as my heart began to pound loudly. âI have no idea what happened to her, my lord. We were doing the dishes together when she collapsed.â She replied, her tone laced with fear. I began to look at the maid suspiciously as I wondered how Lily could have just collapsed without any
