If Lena had listened to me, if she had just killed him when I asked her to, I wouldn't have to be sneaking around a house that belongs to a man I despise.I enter the kitchen and there she is, plating a bowl of soup. The smell is bland. No seasoning. White people soup for a sick person. She doesn't even look up when I walk in. The disrespect."Give it to me," I say.Maria finally looks at me, eyeing me with pure disgust. The feeling is mutual."No," she says flatly, in that thick Italian accent. "I am taking it to Madam Lena.""This is for Lena, isn't it?" I snap, stepping closer."Yes.""Then I'll take it to her. She's my daughter."Maria holds the tray tighter. "No. You will not take it to her.” she says, “Lena needs real care. You can't provide such care, so you should leave. Go sit."Excuse me?
Dante's POVI stand by the window in our bedroom — her bedroom now, I suppose — watching her. She's sitting up against the headboard, the blanket pulled up to her chest and she hasn't said anything since Cara left."Lena?"She blinks. "Hmm?"“I asked if you wanted water," I say. "You didn't answer.""Oh. No. I'm fine."She's not fine. Something is off. Ten minutes ago, she was snapping at me for arguing with her about everything. Now she's suddenly quiet.I walk closer, slowly, so I don't spook her. I sit on the edge of the bed."Are you in pain again? Do you want me to call the doctor?"She shakes her head. "No.""Lena."She finally looks at me properly. Really looks. Her eyes roam across my face — my forehead, my eyes, my mouth, my jaw — so tenderly, and just the way she used to look at me in the mornings when she thought I was still asleep. For a second, my heart stops.Does she remember?"Tesoro?" I whisper. Her ey
Lena's POVOne week ago I thought I was 22. And I woke up with no memory of the past two years of my life. Now I'm sitting in the backseat of a black Maybach that probably costs a fortune, next to a man who says he's my husband. It's been a week.A very long, very confusing, very painful week."This seatbelt, is it too tight? Are you in pain, amore? Do you want me to tell Dante to stop? We can stop if you're in pain."My mother leans over me for the fifth time in ten minutes. Her perfume is so strong It makes my head throb."Mama, I'm fine," I say, trying to be patient. "The seatbelt is fine.""But you're wincing. I saw you wince. Dante, she's wincing."From the other side of the car, Dante doesn't even look up from his phone. His jaw tightens."Cara, if you keep poking her stitches, she ‘will’ be in pain," he says, his voice low and calm but with that edge he always has when he talks to my mother."I'm not poking! I'm caring for my daughter! Something you clearly don't know how to do
Lena's POV*"Because your father is dead."The words don't make sense at first. They just... hang there in the air between us. Like he spoke them in another language.I stare at him."What?" My voice is a whisper. He doesn't repeat it right away. He just looks at me, and his jaw is so tight I can see the muscle jumping. "Lena…..""No," I say, and I shake my head. The movement makes the room spin. "No. No, you're lying.""I'm not lying to you.""You are! You have to be!" My voice gets louder without me wanting it to. "My dad can't be dead. He can't be. I just saw him yesterday. He got me a cake….” "Lena, you need to calm down.""Don't tell me to calm down!" I snap. "Don't you tell me to calm down! You're lying! You're lying to keep me here!"He reaches for my hand and I yank it away."Don't touch me!""Tesoro, please…""Stop calling me that! My name is Lena! Stop!"The heart monitor next to me starts beeping faster. Beep-beep-beep-beep-beep. It’s loud and annoying."Where is he then?
Lena's POV*The man doesn't stop. He's coming closer and closer to the bed and my heart is beating out of my chest."Stay back!" I say. "Don't come closer!"He freezes mid-step. His eyes are locked on mine."Lena?" he says. His voice is low, "Tesoro, it's me.""I don't know you," I say. I press myself back into the pillows. My whole body hurts. "Step back. Don't touch me."He looks like I slapped him. "What are you talking about? I'm your husband. Don't you remember me?"I look at him again. Tall, dark hair, sharp jaw, eyes so dark they're almost black. His hands — God, his hands are stained with blood.I feel no recollection. Nothing. My mind is blank.I turn to the nurse, panicked. "I don't know this man! I don't know him, where's my father? Where is my family?""Lena, calm down," he says, and he reaches out again."Don't touch me!" I shriek. I flinch so hard the IV pulls. He puts his hands up immediately. "Okay. Okay, I won't. I won't harm you, I swear.""I don't know that!" I snap
Dante's POVThe monitor is flatlining and all I see is red."LENA!"I shove past the two nurses in the doorway. One of them tries to grab my arm. "Mr. Moretti, you cannot….""Get off me!" I get to the bed and my knees almost buckle. Her lifeless body stares back at me. Her skin is paper-white against the white sheets, and her lips are parted. The white dress is gone, she's in a hospital gown now, and there are tubes everywhere. In her nose. In her arm. The monitor over her bed reads zero. A long, flat, horrible line.Beep....No. No beep. Just that one long sound."She's gone?" I hear myself say.One of the doctors puts a hand on my shoulder. "Mr. Moretti, we did everything we could. She lost too much blood. Her heart….""Don't fucking touch me," I snap, shaking him off. I rush forward and grab her cold hand. I rub it between both of mine. Hard, like I can warm it back up. Like I can force life back into her."Lena? Baby, come on," I whisper, and I don't care who hears me. "Lena, wake
