Freya's pov

“I'm really sorry. I know you were hoping for a different result but the test shows you are not pregnant," the doctor said softly, like she was scared it would break me.

Maybe it did.

It wasn't exactly the news I was expecting.

I couldn't feel myself for a moment. I just felt numb, waiting for her to tell me she was wrong and they were not my result.

“Are you sure?" I asked, my chest tightening. I couldn't even look at her face because if I did, I might cry. I was so close.

How could I be empty again? What was wrong with me? Is it wrong to want something that was mine? To be called a mother?

She nodded. "Yes. Luna Freya. I am sure.”

My hands trembled under the table. Luna? It almost felt like a mockery. I was nothing but a disappointment. A disgrace.

I still couldn't believe what I was hearing as I whispered. “But I have been feeling sick. I even fainted two days ago…I thought… I thought maybe…”

I was finally carrying his pup. My mate's pup. Alpha Thorne. I would finally be useful. I needed to be useful or else he would discard me again, just like my family did.

Because after three years of trying, praying, counting days, swallowing herbs and tonics, avoiding my favorite foods, you would tell me I wasn't pregnant?

My father had called me cursed. I didn't believe it then but he was right. I was barren and still I had no wolf.

The doctor sighed and pulled her chair closer. “Uh… stress can also cause fever and dizziness. Your body has been under a lot of pressure and I would recommend you take some time to rest.”

How could my body be under pressure? It had done nothing but fail me.

I stood up to leave. What was I going to tell Thorne? I couldn’t tell him. No, he mustn't find out.

“Wait!" the doctor called as my hand rested on the doorknob. She stood up from her chair and opened a small cabinet. She brought out a glass bottle with pale silver liquid and placed it in my hand.

“What is this?"

“That's the fertility elixir I told you about and you are to take this once in a day, take more rest and eat well. Hopefully you should see results soon,” the doctor said with a smile that I couldn't help but return.

So what? I had to trust this little thing and wait for my body to cooperate? So what if my husband runs out of patience entirely before then?

But I didn't say anything else and just nodded because that was what was easier to do now.

My legs shook as I walked. My heart was ripping into pieces that no one could see. This wasn't the way I had imagined the day to go.

The only thing stopping me from breaking apart was the elixir I clutched close to my chest.

As I turned the corner, the voices of the nurses filled my ears.

“That's her?... The Ruinfang Luna?"

“How many times now?"

“Fourth time this year. Negative again, from what I heard"

"Poor thing. I am hearing her husband is well… you know”

“With a wolf that never surfaced? I'm not even surprised. What Alpha wants a barren Luna who couldn't even…”

I forced myself to keep walking, just keep walking, don't stop.

But even after I left them, the word barren Luna followed me all the way to the door.

I cried. I couldn't hold it anymore. I was just like a dry land who couldn't grow anything no matter how much it tried. I had told myself that love could be earned if I just tried hard enough.

As I pulled open the door, I froze, standing beside the opened door of a packed black car, was my husband, Thorne and my sister, Ravenna.

What were they doing in the hospital?

They were laughing. It made my chest burn. He didn't smile like that with me.

They were talking to a doctor who stood in front of them. I didn't know how but my legs kept moving forward and the next words I heard stole my breath.

“Congratulations, Alpha Thorne," the doctor said, his hands in his pockets."The pregnancy is very healthy”

I stilled. Pregnancy? The Alpha whispered something into my sister's ears and she smiled sheepishly.

No. No. No.

It couldn't be what I was thinking. My husband and my sister together?

No way.

He wouldn't do that to me.

Maybe I should have left, and ignore what was so clear in front of me. The betrayal but my legs were already moving towards them even when everything in me was screaming to go home.

“Who is pregnant?" I screamed.

The doctor looked between us uncomfortably and left without another word from him. Smart.

“Freya…” Thorne began to say without bothering to remove his hands from my sister's waist.

I shook my head. I was so much more angry than the pain I was feeling. I focused more on the anger.

"I am asking a question!" I shouted. My eyes flicked to my sister. The same one I had shared a bed with till I was sixteen. The one who I ran to when I had a problem. When did it all change?

“Who are you pregnant for, Ravenna?"

The smile on my sister's face faded slightly. “That is not the conversation we are having here"

I scoffed. Really?

"Then where? Tell me, where do we have this conversation? I… I…” my voice broke but I kept on talking. "Why did I have to walk outside and find you standing outside with my husband and a doctor congratulating the two of you and now, you want to tell me which conversation we are having?”

“Lower…” Thorne shifted closer, his face wrinkling with rage. "Lower your voice, Freya”

I locked my eyes on him. I bit my tongue until I tasted blood. He was looking at me like… like I was an inconvenient thing he could file away.

“Did you know?" I asked, voice barely audible. “When I told you this morning that I was coming here, did you already know?"

He readjusted his stance. Well, that was answer enough.

"How long?” I couldn't stop myself from asking. I wasn't even ready for the answer.

The only thing ringing in my ears was his voice when he had claimed me.

“Come with me, Freya. Be my Luna and I will give you a place where you belong, and no one will ever make you feel like nothing again"

At that moment, I realized I had never been chosen. I had been replaced.

Freya I couldn't sleep.I had tried and God, I had tried.I had gone to bed at a reasonable hour, which felt almost laughable considering everything waiting for me in the morning. I had washed my face, changed into a loose nightdress, climbed beneath the blankets, and closed my eyes with every intention of forcing my body into rest.My body was tired, but my mind was not and the moment I closed my eyes, tomorrow appeared.I saw the council chamber, the raised platform, seven council members watching me, Thorne, the ritual and more importantly, my child.Every possibility seemed to split into another possibility before I could finish thinking about the first.I turned onto my side, then onto my back, then onto my other side, before I pulled the blanket higher.I closed my eyes, opened them again, but nothing worked, and Eliza wasn't helping. She had been restless since I lay down.Usually, when I was exhausted, she quieted with me. Tonight, she prowled slowly through the back of my

Freya I reached for the handle, but Ravenna still didn't move. I opened the door and held it for her, then I looked back at my sister.“I appreciate the warning.” Her expression remained unreadable as I continued. “I'll see you at the ritual.”For several seconds, neither of us moved. Then Ravenna stood. She smoothed the front of her dress with the same effortless elegance she had worn when she arrived. She walked toward me, but when she reached the doorway, she stopped. For one brief moment, we stood close enough that I could remember being sixteen again. Her brushing my hair before a ceremony, her telling me to stand straighter, her whispering that people were always watching, her hand in mine, and her smile. All those years, all those memories, and now I couldn't tell which ones had been real.Ravenna stepped past me without another word. I watched her walk down the corridor until she disappeared around the corner. Then I closed the door.My hand remained on the handle as I lea

Freya “Ravenna… were you ever pregnant?” the words echoed in the room, even after I'd asked. Ravenna’s smile on the other hand, held for one second, or maybe two. It was barely noticeable, but I caught it.I had spent sixteen years learning my sister's expressions so I knew the difference between her genuine smile and the one she wore when she was entertaining someone she didn't particularly like. I knew the slight lift of her left eyebrow when she was annoyed, the way her fingers curled against her palm when she was lying, and right now, Ravenna's smile held for exactly one second too long. Then it changed, not completely, but just enough.“What kind of question is that?” Her eyes sharpened.“A direct one.” I leaned back in my chair, studying her, because now, the room suddenly felt smaller.A moment ago, she had been sitting across from me in that beautiful dress, speaking softly about my health, my pregnancy, and my future. She had looked every inch the concerned older sister.

Freya Ravenna arrived two days later. Nobody had invited her and that was the first thing I noticed. The second was that she had apparently decided that not being invited was only a minor inconvenience. Her message arrived shortly after breakfast.Sera handed it to me while I was sitting near the window, sorting through the papers I'd received from the council."Someone left this at the door."“Oh.” I looked at the folded parchment in her hand."Who?""One of Ravenna's attendants." Sera answered and my fingers stilled.Sera watched my face carefully as I took the message. The handwriting was elegant, but I recognized it immediately.I unfolded the paper, and started reading. Freya,I hope you will forgive me for coming without warning. I have been worried about you since hearing of your disappearance from the capital, and I would very much like to see you.I know there are things between us that have been left unsaid. I don't want another messenger or another person's interpretati

Freya The following morning, I chose the chair facing the door.It wasn't an accident. If Ragnar was going to walk into the room, I wanted to see him coming.I sat with my hands folded loosely in my lap, my back straight against the chair, and my feet planted firmly on the floor. Sera's private sitting room was warm despite the cold morning outside, sunlight filtering through the tall windows in pale strips across the rug.The adjoining door stood open.Sera was exactly where she had promised to be. I couldn't see her from where I sat, but I knew she was there. So did Ragnar.A soft knock sounded against the outer door and my heartbeat gave one hard thud.“He's here.” Eliza immediately lifted her head.I didn't answer her and the door opened. Davan stood outside first, but he stepped aside almost immediately, then Ragnar walked in.For a moment, everything inside me went completely still.I hadn't seen him in person since the day I left the capital. Not across a council chamber, no

Freya The note arrived just after sunset.I was sitting at Sera's kitchen table with a cup of tea between my hands when there was a quiet knock at the front door.Sera looked up from the book she had been pretending to read for the last twenty minutes."Expecting someone?" She turned in my direction. "No." I shook my head. “Why would I?” My question hung in the air as she pushed herself to her feet and disappeared into the hallway. I didn't mean to listen in, but I heard the door open and a man's voice murmured something too low for me to make out, followed by Sera's quieter reply.A moment later, she returned holding a folded piece of paper. She didn't hand it to me immediately .Instead, she looked at it, then at me."It's from Davan." There was a hint to her voice, but I told myself I wasn't going to dwell on it. Not yet. “Oh.” My fingers tightened slightly around my cup. "Why?""He didn't say." Sera crossed the room and placed the note on the table in front of me.A quick s

Freya's pov “Don't marry him," Ravenna, my sister, had said when I told her that I was leaving with Thorne. I was so confused that day. Why wasn't she happy for me? “He chose me," I shot back. "He chose me as his mate.” She wouldn't know what it was like to be chosen for once because, even befor
