The brightness of the weather was cool and foggy; the sky had a greyish turquoise tint, like the silt in the buckwheat straw of a wagon. Snow had fallen during the night, and its warm damp was now sticking to the seams of the sea. Not a breath of wind stirred the quiet air. It was very still, but a draft would blow across the street and make a little flurry of feet on the sidewalk.
Completely forgetting about the people who brought me to the beach, I slowly walked around the dense pine trees on the western side of the street, taking stock of the quiet street, my gaze still fixed on him, until I saw him sitting alone, across the narrow gap of a building, with a newspaper spread on his laps. Walking closer to him, I made sure my gaze was planted on his face, hoping not to miss a single moment of him.
As I walked closer, he pulled up his shirttail to get some of the air out of his shirt. I had a hunch. His head did not look at me, not even for a few seconds. But suddenly, he got up and went inside the building, at the entrance to the alleyway, with his face set and his arms folded over his chest. And in a flash, without looking, he left the alleyway, strolling through, in-between like a king going for battle. And in a blink, he came back, a blanket in his hands, and swiftly, he sat out, wrapping himself with it.
"What could be going on with him?" I paused, as I observed him silently. My mind still running on the thought that he was actually not looking stable at all. But not a single sign of a crazy thought crossed my mind. My gaze was still firmly fixed on him, but I don't think I ever expected a clear answer to my question.
His piercing eyes met mine with a silent exchange of emotions. And for the next few minutes, he watched me from inside the blankets as I walked to him.
"Hey, Joey! Is this you..? I never knew I was going to meet you in person. I thought all that was just a dream!" I said, excitedly, grabbing the blanket as I unwrapped him gently.
"W- what's, w-who's that ?" He asked, hastily, as he tried to slide out of his blanket with a confused look on his face as he was looking at my face.
I was incredulous, trying to push the thoughts aside, taking a deep breath as I looked at him, taking a small breath in, and he took a few deep breaths too. Shocking as it was, It was an adorable little boy to behold.
"Oh my God! Please, I'm so so sorry... I didn't know it was you! Please, I'm so sorry...!" I squealed in fright, holding my chest feeling so embarrassed. I looked down, still feeling weak from my heart attack, not knowing what to say. "How come I didn't see it wasn't Joey? What was I even thinking?" I looked down at him in disappointment, bringing my chin down to my chest as I wiggled my fingers in an attempt to help him cover up again. And suddenly, he was gone, and so was my guilt and shame.
And in a twinkle, I found myself feeling a soft hand on my shoulder that wasn't a hand. I became so shocked when I looked up to find Melinda's warm, reassuring eyes as she touched me on the shoulder with a soft cup, catching my breath as the flash of that simple touch brought back my memories of how I felt just seconds ago. I stood up straight and turned to her. She handed me a cup of warm popcorn and her eyes looked so concerned.
"What's wrong, hon? What's wrong with you? I asked myself, pinching my cheek.
"You look like you just saw a ghost or something. Is everything alright with you, Cilia?" She asked, her voice filled with concern in her looks. "Come on girl... I and Sanny have been worried about you. You left with the hope of returning in a short while, but ended up taking too much time." She paused as she looked down and then slowly back up to me, pleading with me to talk. I reached out and put my hand on her shoulder and pulled her close.
"Melinda.. I don't know what's happening... Everything has been a mess for me these past few days, and I just haven't been able to find my footing to return back to normal." Tears trickled down my cheeks, but I continued. "Everything is just starting to get so blurry to me right now. Don't let anything bother you, okay?"
"Come on Cilia... Your pain is my pain girl! Please calm down and relax your nerves; there's nothing wrong with you girl.. You're doing just fine!" Her words reassured me, yet, I didn't want to believe it. "You know what dear friend, you have to take a break; go out some more and be happy with your life for once! Jayson left you, doesn't mean your entire world is destroyed completely. You surely will find love again. Move on dear best friend..!"
Melinda didn't seem to understand my plight from her statement. Well...
"I know... But it's not about Jason"
"Then who, Cilia?"
"I-I-I I thought-" I couldn't complete my statement for I felt no urge to say how I was feeling.
"I understand Cilia, please, calm down for me, okay..?"
Ultimately, I hoped that better days would come for me according to her words. A day that I would find true love and a happy life filled with other better things. A life with no worries. Melinda's soothing words gave warmth to my soul, and I couldn't help but smile at her warmly.
"You know you look more better when you smile, right?" Sanny said from behind me. When I heard the words of his soft voice, I lost control of my body, and broke down in tears. He walked over to me and planted a soft kiss on my forehead. Shivers ran down my spine instantly, just the same way I usually felt when Joey was doing the same to me in my dreams.
Melinda left Sanny and me to go get some snacks, just for reasons best known to her, because we already had enough to take. Staring at the cup of popcorn in my hand, Sanny shoved his hand into his pocket and brought out a face towel. He gently wiped my tears and I thanked him, exchanging a few warm smiles. He handed me back the moistened towel with a wink once he started eating my snack. At that point, I felt so relaxed with his presence, and smiled. With a stop to get more popcorn, for he had already almost finished mine, he engaged me in a quick round of conversation. I was blown away by the fact that he didn't just know how to ask me questions, but actually seemed to know a lot about me. All thanks to Melinda. "Alright guys, time to go home!" Melinda returned with some bags of packaged goods for our lunch.
"I mean, you're Joey..?" I froze. The heavy electric guitar riff began as a continuation of the last track in my head like the sound of distant thunder. There were a few moments of silence when it sounded like a tune was escaping from the speakers, but finally, the guitar turned into lyrics, and there were no more thoughts to accompany the band. I iced, breathing so heavily with my hands right by my sides, feeling like they were paralized. My entire body trembled from within, and as he saw me so rigidly with my lips slightly parted."Hey, what's wrong? Did I say anything wrong?" He held me as I was gradually slipping to the ground. Nothing I could answer.Nothing anyone I could say. He pulled me up, back to my feet. He didn't make me stand. He just grabbed my arm and p
It was a very long and cold night, one of many over the years that make up the story of Rocky and Bea. I'm not entirely sure how to make it any shorter. I woke up quite late, stretching myself out on my bed, trying to reach out to Joey, for I needed his warmth but I was surprised that he wasn't there at my reach."I could remember we slept here together on this bed; where could he have gone to this early in the morning?" I thought to myself, glanced around with my eyes partly open. Then, I got out of bed to take a look around the house as I walked down the stairs, I felt a strange electricity in my body. I paused and looked downwards, in-between my thighs as I felt this hot liquid coming out of me. I pulled my legs apart, and took my time to look at my womanhood. "Oh my God!" I gasped at the sight, and as I touched the liquid,
"Joey.. Joey... Please come fast please! I'm in trouble. I've got to get to you, right now. Help me, please. I can't help the situation here as I don't understand what's going on in my house!""Hold on Cilia, what's the matter? What's happening?""I don't even know! I can't seem to explain anything right now..!. Everything seems to be turning upside down right before my very eyes... Please come over and help me out... Please just come! Please...!!!""Alright, alright, Cilia! Hold on.. hold on please, take a deep breath... Get some fresh air, and I'll be there in a jiffy! Okay girl?I just could not seem to respond after his last words to me, as words failed me completely. My mind could only imagine what
Words failed me as I felt my entire body iced. Oh yeah, it was like I was completely out of this world, entirely! I could see tears welled up in his eyes. Then he brought his head down to the side and said to me in a whisper, "what if I asked you to help me avenge my death, Cilia?""Jeeezzz… Huh? Death...? I don't get it Joey. What do you mean by 'death'?""You won't understand.""Then make me to, because you're scaring me right now!""I know Cilia, and I'm sorry about that. But, you don't have to be scared!" He screamed and paused. The room became extremely cold. I saw tears like blood dripping from his eyes, running down his cheeks, but none was touching the ground.&nb
Within a matter of days, something had happened. Something more than just a simple rebound. Something to create a whole new level of self awareness. As luck would have it, my life had been conditioned over time to expect such events. Of course, I never asked myself if it was really a gift from God, but I was grateful for it, nonetheless. But it didn't mean I wasn't still feeling the effects, but one thing was certain, that it would pass, and not get any worse.I opened my eyes to a new day, and to the beauty of the world. Everything was still, quiet, and warm. Perfectly still, with just the tiniest hint of summer breeze. As I glanced up, I had a near panic attack. Immediately, I closed them back again as the effect of the sun rays pierced my eyes through the window. Slowly, I opened them again to see a totally different environment. Everything looked completely different. Confused as I
"What's the matter Cilia?" Melinda came in from the kitchen, with a stream of oatcake on a piece of toast. You could never have too much oat cake. I love eating them.I flinched as I replied, "oh, nothing!""You sure...?""Y-yeah, y-yes yes, I'm okay!""Cilia... You're stuttering""Huh? Stu-, um, am I..? I'm not Melinda, I'm fine.""Hmmmm okay. But I heard you talking to someone, who was that?""Of course not! I'm not. I mean, I wasn't talking to anyone. I was just talking to myself."
I opened my eyes to vernal sunlight, filtered through the dead leaves. The grassy field was just a few feets away from the riverbank. The sun was warm on my face and the insects hummed around me. With a yawn, I looked up and saw small fluffy clouds of dust dancing across the sky. And then I realized that I was not dreaming, that I was really, truly alive. I woke up to a beautiful sun setting on a blue starry sky. And with a gasp, I saw that I was naked when I looked down to my thighs. Screaming to grab my clothes, I realized that I had been tied to a tree. For a moment I stood in total shock. Then panic began to set in as I struggled to get untied.Realizing I was alone, and that no one would hear me through the dense forest of tall dead trees, I turned around and frantically scanned the landscape for someone, anyone who could help. I turned to the west and for the next several minutes, as I
