Chapter 1

I was momentarily at a loss when Dylan Lewis, the hospital director, asked me why I wanted to become an intern.

The sound of cannonfire and the cries of patients on the battlefield abruptly rang in my ears.

"I wanted a break from wielding the scalpel," I replied. "During my time here, I'll make sure that all surgeries in the hospital are carried out safely. In exchange, you have to help me keep my identity under wraps."

Dylan's eyes lit up. He shook my hand and conveyed his joyful, enthusiastic agreement.

After he left, I turned to go buy some coffee, only for someone to bump into me.

Medical charts scattered across the floor. I was about to bend down and pick them up when a sharp female voice pierced my ears.

"Are you blind?"

I frowned and straightened up to see a female doctor glaring coldly at me with her arms crossed. She was wearing a white coat and had put on exquisite makeup.

The assistant next to her pointed an accusing finger at me. "Watch where you're going! Can you even afford the compensation for scalding Dr. Chase's hands?"

I sneered and retorted, "If my eyes served me right, she was the one who wasn't paying attention and bumped into me. Dr. Chase, was it? You may be able to get away with not paying attention while walking, but definitely not when performing a surgery."

The assistant was furious. She was about to step forward when Dr. Chase stopped her.

She glanced down at my name tag before smiling scornfully.

"A new intern? I'm about to perform a surgery on a renowned diplomat named Roland Garcia."

She lifted her hand to indicate her wristwatch, then pointed at the scattered charts on the floor.

"You have three seconds left to pick up the charts," she snapped, furrowing her brow.

All the nurses and doctors passing through the hallway slowed down to watch us.

"Isn't that Dr. Sylvia Chase, our hospital's lead surgeon and neurology specialist? She's a superstar doctor who has countless celebrities clamoring to have her lead their surgeries!"

"This intern might very well end up vanishing from the medical world for offending her!"

The assistant threw me a smug look, clearly expecting the onlookers' words to scare me into apologizing.

I simply sneered again and looked straight into Sylvia's eyes. "Instead of apologizing for bumping into me, you're asking me to pick up your medical charts for you?"

Everyone fell silent instantly. Their eyes went wide, as if I'd said something unbelievable.

Sylvia's gaze turned cold. "What did you say?"

I replied slowly and clearly, "I'm not picking them up."

To my surprise, Sylvia sneered. "Not bad. You men have certainly upgraded your tactic. It's just a pity that they don't work on me."

I frowned. "What do you mean?"

The assistant, whose name was Zoe Quinn, laughed mockingly. "Oh, drop the act! Everyone knows that Dr. Chase is renowned for her beauty in the medical industry. Countless men wish to pursue her affections!

"You bumped into her on purpose and then made a show of defying her just to get her attention, didn't you?"

The male doctors gathered around also scoffed and added their own two cents.

"So, he turned out to be yet another one of Dr. Chase's admirers!"

"These newbies are getting more and more shameless with their moves."

Sylvia stepped forward and poked at my name tag with the tip of a pen. She sneered. "Xavier Russell, an intern who just started here today. I suggest you give up, because I won't spare a loser like you even a single glance."

I laughed in disbelief. I'd met plenty of beautiful and professional female doctors, but this was my first time encountering someone as mediocre yet narcissistic as her.

Sylvia looked arrogantly at me. "Stop trying to get my attention. Pick up those medical charts, or I'll call the hospital director and get him to fire you!"

I stuck a hand into my pants pocket. "Call him, then," I said casually. "I'd certainly like to see who Dylan will fire—you or me."

"You even have the nerve to address Dr. Lewis by name!" Sylvia exclaimed, looking somewhat enraged.

She took out her phone and shouted threateningly at me, "You'd better not regret this!"

In less than 20 minutes after Stanley ended the call, the door to the medical committee boardroom swung open. He quickly walked in and immediately spotted me. "It's good to see you again, Dr. Russell!"He bowed his head slightly toward me in utter deference. "I never would've thought you were staying under the radar at this hospital this entire time."Having the president of the Medical Association bow to me proved beyond a doubt that my title, "God's Hand," was well earned. Sylvia panicked, biting her lower lip so hard it bled. Michael and Zoe, who were standing beside her, went stiff, lacking the courage to even look up. Their arrogance, schemes, and false accusations proved utterly pathetic when stacked against true skill and status.Stanley reached out and took my hand in a steady grip.I tried to pull away a few times but couldn't. "You can let go now, Stanley.""I'm just worried that if I let go, you'll disappear on me again, Dr. Russell," he said, cracking a joke.Layla

"W-What did you just say?" Sylvia stood frozen on the spot, looking completely stunned.Stanley's mention of "God's Hand" echoed clearly across the entire boardroom, instantly shattering the dead silence. Every single committee member and staff member stood in absolute shock, turning to stare at me all at once."G-God's Hand? Does he mean the legendary doctor who performed open-field surgeries with minimal equipment on the front lines and saved hundreds of lives?""You've got to be kidding me! How could someone like that be at our hospital? Isn't Xavier just an intern?"Several senior committee members shot to their feet."He's God's Hand? You're telling me the world-famous, top doctor in the entire country is actually Xavier Russell?""I had no idea he was so young—and handsome, too!""It's no wonder he spotted Dr. Chase's misdiagnosis instantly! It turns out a high-profile figure was undercover as an intern this whole time!" There were surprised whispers erupting among the c

"Stop the recording!" Sylvia reached for my phone, trying to knock it away.I sidestepped effortlessly, stepped back, and slipped the phone into my pocket.Sylvia missed completely, stumbling into the podium. She clung to the edge with both hands to steady herself, leaned into the microphone, and frantically denied it. "That recording was taken out of context and edited! I did panic and asked for the people in the observation area for help when the emergency happened yesterday, but I was calling for Dr. Farrow!"She shot me a look of pure disgust and continued, "You're just an intern without a medical license! Why on earth would I ever ask you for help?"Michael froze for a moment, then took the opportunity to jump in. "That's right! Dr. Chase came to me for help first when the emergency broke out in the operating room. "Xavier, who was under my supervision, ignored my orders and insisted on rushing in himself. I tried repeatedly to stop him, but he wouldn't listen. Thankfully,

Standing at the podium, Sylvia's expression was cold as she said in an unyielding tone, "I was the lead surgeon throughout yesterday's operation, following all standard protocols. "It was just a routine bleed during the operation, but Xavier barged into the operating room without authorization, and without any permission, he forced his way into the surgical field and performed emergency intracranial hemostasis on his own!" She looked around the room and deliberately raised her voice. "Surgery is an art of precision and planning! You're an intern who hasn't even finished training, yet you were arrogant enough to change the emergency plan on your own! "You're lucky that nothing went wrong in the operating room. Otherwise, Mr. Garcia would have died. It would have humiliated the whole hospital and ruined the ceasefire agreement! Do you really think you can bear responsibility for that?"Before I could even respond, Zoe exclaimed indignantly, backing Sylvia up, "That's right! Mr. Ga

The smell of blood hadn't completely faded from the operating room yet.Sylvia was drenched in cold sweat, looking like someone who'd just been rescued from drowning.Seeing that I hadn't answered her question, she walked over and continued asking persistently, "Who exactly are you? I'm asking you a question! Do you not hear me?"Empty vessels made the most noise.I took off my blood-stained surgical gloves and walked away without so much as glancing at her.Furious at being completely ignored, Sylvia shouted after me, "Xavier Russell! Hold it right there!"The operating room door slid open soundlessly, and Layla walked quickly up to me, her eyes shining with admiration."Thank you so much for stepping in to save the operation just now!"I didn't expect Layla to be the one to express the gratitude that should have come from Sylvia. As I walked forward, I replied indifferently, "You helped me out too."Layla smiled at me with genuine appreciation. "Even experienced doctors woul

The heart rate monitor beeped wildly, and the entire monitoring screen's view of the surgery was wholly taken up by the sight of blood spurting from the patient's artery. It was complete chaos in the observation room as everyone rushed to the windows.Michael's face was deathly pale. He yelled fearfully, "Why did the patient suddenly start hemorrhaging? Didn't Dr. Chase say that the surgery was guaranteed to succeed?"Sylvia's hand trembled uncontrollably around the scalpel. It looked as if she was questioning her own judgment for the first time.Zoe scrambled to hand her a neurosurgical patty and hemostatic dressings. But even with the suction device turned to its maximum setting, the gushing of blood could not be stopped.I frowned. If they carried on like this, the patient was sure to die.I stared fixedly at the screen, silently working out a clear emergency response plan."Systolic blood pressure is dropping below 70! Heart rate is 142!" the anesthesiologist called out urge
