She had waited for him for so long, when she finally moved on he decided to come back into her life. “Why now? It took me so long to get over hm. Now when I finally found someone new, he waltzes back into my life expecting me to what, take him back?” Amaya managed to get the words out between sobs. The memories started flooding her mind.
TWELVE YEARS AGO… “This carnival is amazing!” She looked over at Mia. She was excited because this was a special carnival and she wanted to go on all the rides. She and Mia had bought tickets for the different rides. “Let’s start over there.” She pointed to the roller coaster ride. They went to stand in the line. Later in the evening they went to the school dance. They were dancing and having fun, laughing and enjoying themselves. She suddenly looked over to the door. There in the door was this hunk of a guy, towering over everyone around him. She felt like time stood still as she could no longer hear the music playing. Everyone around her started fading away and all she could see was this handsome guy. Her heart started beating loudly and she felt an electric shock through her body. He looked at her and smiled, she smiled back. He started moving towards her. She was transfixed by him. “Maya! Maya!” She jumped back into reality. It was Mia calling her as she saw her friend lost in thought. She was still looking at him as he was walking her way. The girls all fawning over him, guys greeting him. She wanted to know who he was. “Who is that?” She uttered. “That’s Alex.” Mia responded. He was inching closer. This man was handsome, so handsome looking at him hurt. He was getting closer and closer. She couldn’t breathe… There he was right in front of her, his eyes locking in on her. Those smouldering sea green eyes. He smiled. “Hi, I’m Alex.” He reached out a hand at her. She looked at his hand and slowly reached out to shake his hand. She felt like she was moving in slow motion. “Hi, I… I’m Amaya.” He smiled again, making his dimples appear. This man was way too handsome and he carried himself in a way that made it known he knows how good looking he was. A blush crept up on her face, she smiled back at him. “Would you like to dance?” He asked. “Yes.” She responded. He took her hand in his, moved them over to the dance floor. Pulled her closer towards him until there was no space between the two of them. He whispered in her ear. “You took my breath away and I would like it back.” His breath tingled against her ear and her knees started getting weaker beneath her. “Oh, how original.” she retorted. He chuckled and pulled her closer, she could feel the vibrations throughout her body. Her head was against his chest, she could hear his heart beating, it was loud and fast. She wondered if she had the same effect on him that he had on her. He was tall, caramel skin coloured, broad shoulders with an amazing body. One could tell he was a sportsman. “Do you have a boyfriend?” His voice vibrated through his chest. “No.” She replied. “How about letting me be your boyfriend?” She looked up at him, he was watching her, waiting for a response. She broke free from him and took a step back. “We just met. I don’t know what type of person you are. He took her hand and led her outside to a quiet place where there was no one around. “I saw the way you were looking at me. I know you like me and you know I like you. What more do we need? As long as we both have an attraction to each other, the rest we can build slowly.” He bend down until he was face to face with her. “We can start by spending more time together, that way we will get to know each other better. Don’t you agree?” The more she thought about it the more she thought he was right. She liked him and she wanted to spend more time with him. “Okay.” She finally uttered. They both smiled He pulled her into his arms and held her tight. When he finally released her he took her hand and they headed back to the rides. They went on the different rides together, talking and laughing, enjoying themselves. They played games, he won her a teddy bear in a shooting game. They took photos together, exchanged BBM pins and made plans to see each other again the following weekend as they attended different schools and wouldn’t have time to see each other during the week. They BBM’ed each other everyday making plans for the weekends. They had a tumultuous relationship. When it was good it was great but when it was bad it would get real dark. They would fight every other day, both were passionate beings and both as stubborn as mules, which made it difficult to reach common ground but they were crazy about each other. They would also drive each other crazy. They were each other’s firsts of everything. First serious relationship, first kiss, first love, first times. They were each other’s worlds but also the one’s who could hurt each other the most. They shared every part of their lives. Their families adorned them and approved of the relationship and everyone thought they would end up getting married. They were each other’s matricball partners. They promised each other “forever”, they promised to always be together no matter what happened in life. They would always be there for each other and they were for two years until they matriculated. She was staring out at the beautiful ocean, taking in the beautiful view. The cool breeze, the sound of the waves reaching the shore. She and Alex had spent the day together. It had been the most perfect day. “Maya!” She looked back, it was Alex with their ice cream. He rushed over and handed her her ice cream cone. They stood looking over the ocean, listening to the waves. “I have something to tell you.” His voice was somber. She shivered at his tone. She turned to look at him. “Maya, I can’t be with you anymore.” It took her a while to process what he had said. Tears started welling up as she was totally blindsided and felt like someone had just knocked the wind out of her. “Why?” Was all she could get out. “I feel this is the best decision for both of us.” Tears started streaming down her face. “Take me home please.” Her voice broke. They walked back to the car, every step she took felt like she was walking on knives. Her body hurt, her eyes hurt and worst of all her heart felt like it was breaking more and more with each step.. She could no longer enjoy the ice cream so she threw it in the closest bin. Her mind was racing, she was trying to think where she went wrong, what could she have done to deserve this. She loved him so much it hurt and now she lost him and still had to be in his presence. She was trying to be strong but she just couldn’t. He tried talking to her on the ride home but she couldn’t pay attention, she was too hurt. The car stopped, they were in front of her house. She unbuckled the seatbelt, he took her hand in his. “Maya, please let me explain.” “Alex, I have nothing to say to you, not right now.” She turned to open the door, he got out on his side and jogged over to her side as she was getting out of the car. He stopped in front of her. “Maya?” He tried touching her, he stoped when he saw her flinch. “Goodbye Alex.” She walked past him and went into her house.SHE WENT INTO THE KITCHEN AND PUT ON THE KETTLE, SHE DECIDED TO MAKE SOME TEA TO CALM HER NERVES. SHE TOOK OUT A CUP AND TEASPOON, ADDED THREE SUGARS TO HER CUP AND TOOK OUT A JOKO TEABAG. SHE POURED IN THE BOILING WATER ADDED MILK AND STIRRED. PERFECT! JUST THE WAY SHE LIKED IT. SHE TOOK HER CUP AND WENT TO THE BALCONY. THE BALCONY HAD A COMFY SOFA SEAT, FAKE POT PLANTS AS SHE DID NOT HAVE GREEN FINGERS AT ALL. THERE WAS A SMALL COFFEE TABLE WITH BOOKS FOR HER TO READ. HER OTHER SAFE SPACE. THE WEATHER WAS LOVELY, NOT TO HOT AND NOT TOO COLD JUST RIGHT. IT ALWAYS AMAZES HER HOW CAPE TOWN WEATHER CAN CHANGE IN AN INSTANT. ONE MOMENT IT IS RAINING THE NEXT MOMENT THE SUN IS SHINING, SOME PEOPLE SAY CAPE TOWN WEATHER IS LIKE A WOMAN'S MOOD, ALWAYS CHANGING. SHE WENT TO SIT DOWN AND PLACED HER CUP ON A COASTER ON THE COFFEE TABLE. SHE TOOK A DEEP BREATH IN AND SLOWLY BREATHED IT OUT AGAIN. SHE WANTED TO CLEAR HER THOUGHTS. SHE NEEDED TO DECIDE WHAT SHE WAS GOING TO DO. SHE COULDN'T KEEP
"I HAVE NOT BEEN FEELING WELL LATELY, SO MY MIND HAS NOT BEEN FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. SORRY BABES, PROMISE WILL DO BETTER IN THE FUTURE." SHE RESPONDED. SHE WAS HOPING THAT WAS ENOUGH TO FOOL HIM FOR NOW. SHE WAS THANKFUL HE WAS AWAY. SHE WAS SCARED HER FACE WOULD HAVE GIVEN HER AWAY. SHE HAD NEVER BEEN GOOD AT HIDING HER EMOTIONS ESPECIALLY FROM HIM. HE WAS VERY GOOD AT READING PEOPLE AND THAT HAS LEAD TO HIS SUCCESS IN THE BUSINESS WORLD. HE KNEW HOW TO CONNECT WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE AND COULD ALWAYS READ THEIR EXPRESSIONS TO KNOW IF HE WAS BEING LIED TO. "I'M SORRY TO HEAR THAT BABE, I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE YOU. TO HOLD YOU IN MY ARMS AND TO KISS YOU. I REALLY MISS YOU." HE SAID. "I MISS YOU, TOO." SHE RESPONDED. SHE DID MISS HIM. SHE WISHED SHE COULD BE HELD IN HIS BIG STRONG ARMS LIKE SHE ALWAYS DID WHEN SHE NEEDED COMFORTING. HE WAS HER SAFE SPACE. HE WAS HER ROCK, HER SAFETY NET. TEARS STARTED ROLLING DOWN HER FACE. SHE DID NOT WANT TO LOSE HIM. WHAT WOULD SHE DO WITHOUT HIM? WHAT W
"MY LOVE, WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG TO ANSWER THE PHONE?" JAMES ASKED ON THE OTHER END OF THE LINE. SHE WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HIS MOOD. SHE HAD HOPED THAT HE WAS CALLING HER JUST BECAUSE HE MISSED HER AND NOT FOR WHAT HAD JUST HAPPENED. SHE KNEW IF HE KNEW HE WOULD GO BERSERK. SHE HAD SEEN HIM ANGRY BEFORE, HE RARELY GOT ANGRY BUT WHEN HE DID IT WAS SOMETHING TO FEAR. ONE TIME HE HAD FOUND THAT SOMEONE CLOSE TO HIM HAD BETRAYED HIS TRUST AND SOLD COMPANY SECRETS TO A RIVAL COMPANY. HE WAS SO UPSET AND STARTED DESTROYING EVERYTHING IN THE SURROUNDING. HE HAD SPECIAL CONNECTIONS WITH THE UNDERWORLD; HOW SPECIAL SHE HAD NO IDEA BUT WHAT SHE DID KNOW. WHAT SHE DID KNOW WAS THAT THAT PARTICULAR PERSON WHO HAD BETRAYED HIM WENT MISSING ALONG WITH HIS FAMILY. SHE HAD TRIED PROBING HIM ABOUT IT BUT SHE NEVER GOT A STRAIGHT ANSWER OUT OF HIM. SINCE THEN SHE HAD ALWAYS BEEN VERY CAREFUL AROUND HIM TRYING TO ENSURE HE NEVER GOT TO THAT STATE AGAIN. ALAS HERE SHE WAS FRESH WITH BETRAYAL AND HE
HE LOOKED AT HER LIKE HE HAD NO IDEA HOW TO RESPOND. SHE WAITED, SHE WANTED AN ANSWER."MAYA, I'M SO SORRY. I REALLY AM. YOU KNOW THAT I REALLY LOVE YOU, I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED YOU. BREAKING UP WITH YOU BACK THEN WAS A MISTAKE, IT BROKE ME MORE THAN YOU COULD REALIZE. BUT I WAS THINKING OF YOU WHEN I MADE THAT CHOICE. I WANTED YOU TO HAVE A HAPPY LIFE AND DID NOT WANT YOU BURDENED BY MY ILLNESS. I HAD NO GUARANTEE THAT I WAS GOING TO SURVIVE I WOULD RATHER YOU BE UPSET WITH ME OVER A BREAKUP THAN SPEND YOUR LIFE MOURNING ME. I THOUGHT WHAT I DID WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE AT THE TIME AND I AM TRULY SORRY FOR THE HURT THAT I CAUSED YOU."HE STEPPED FORWARD, TOOK HER HAND IN HIS. HE LEANED DOWN AND KISSED HER HAND GENTLY. HE THEN TOOK HER FACE IN HIS HANDS AND PULLED HER IN FOR A KISS. HE KISSED HER WITH ALL HIS MIGHT. HE KISSED HER LIKE HE HAD A HUNGER THAT ONLY SHE COULD FILL. HE PULLED HER CLOSER TO HIM THEIR KISS GREW INTENSE. SHE GAVE IN AND KISSED HIM BACK. SHE OPENED HER MOUTH SLIGHTLY AN
SHE WAS TRYING HER HARDEST TO TRY TO THINK OF A SUITABLE SOLUTION AS SHE KNEW SHE COULD NOT HAVE BOTH BUT IT WAS HARD GIVING UP HER FIRST LOVE. SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO. HOW WAS IT POSSIBLE TO LOVE TWO PEOPLE AT THE SAME TIME? SHE REALIZED SHE STILL LOVED ALEX A LOT AND WAS NOT SURE SHE WAS WILLING TO GIVE HIM UP BUT SHE ALSO KNEW SHE COULD NOT GIVE UP JAMES. THE MORE SHE THOUGHT ABOUT IT THE WORSE THINGS SEEMED TO GET AS SHE WAS TURNING OUT TO BE SOMEONE SHE NEVER THOUGHT SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN. THEY BOTH HAVE THEIR STRENGTHS BUT IT WAS SO HARD BECAUSE NOW THAT ALEX HAD EXPLAINED TO HER WHY HE BROKE UP WITH HER. SHE SEEMED TO LOVE HIM EVEN MORE THAN SHE HAD BEFORE. SHE NEEDED TO FIGURE THINGS OUT BUT SHE ALSO NEEDED TO SEE JAMES, MAYBE IF SHE SAW HIM SHE WOULD STOP THINKING ABOUT ALEX. "I NEED TO GO HOME. WE WILL TALK ONCE I HAVE CALMED DOWN AND HAVE THOUGHT THINGS THROUGH" SHE TOLD ALEX. HE LOOKED LIKE A DEAR CAUGHT IN HEADLIGHTS. "MAYA, CAN WE NOT TALK THIS OUT BEFORE
She tried her best to calm down but she couldn't control her emotions. Everything was getting too much for her. She needed fresh air, she couldn't breathe anymore, she felt like she was getting a panic attack. She stood up and headed for the door, he followed her. Once she was outside she could feel the fresh breeze hit her face, it was a stark contrast to the heat that was filling her up inside. She started heaving as she was crying, she was totally out of control, her breathing was unsteady. She was bent over from being out of control and crying. He tried comforting her but she pushed him away, she needed space and he was not giving it to her. "Please, leave me alone. I need space right now." She tried normalizing her breathing but it was difficult to regain control of her emotions. She tried comforting herself by hugging herself and telling herself it was all okay. Everything was over, she was in a safe space. Finally after a few minutes she managed to calm down. Once she regained
