PROLOGUE

Amber Desiree’s POV

What am I supposed to do?

Tears streamed down my face as my hands trembled, clutching the pregnancy test so tightly I thought it might break. I bought three of them just to be sure. But the results were all the same.

Two red lines.

My heart pounded so hard it hurt. I covered my mouth, trying to silence the sob that fought to escape.

“AD? Are you okay in there? What’s the result?” Leila’s worried voice came from the other side of the door.

I stepped out of the bathroom, tears already spilling down my cheeks. The moment I saw her, I collapsed into her arms, crying uncontrollably.

“Lei... I don’t know what to do,” I sobbed, my voice breaking.

She wrapped her arms around me and gently rubbed my back, saying nothing and just letting me cry. She already knew the answer without me saying a word.

I’m pregnant.

That night changed everything—the night Leila brought home her drunk brother, and we ended up sleeping together. I still can’t believe it happened. I can’t even begin to process it. Yes, bearing a child for him was part of our agreement, but still... I never thought it would happen like this.

Minutes passed before I finally calmed down. I wiped my tears with the back of my hand before speaking again.

“Lei, what should I do?” I whispered, my voice trembling. “Lorenzo doesn’t even remember what happened between us.”

Leila let out an exasperated sigh. “Ugh, my brother is unbelievable! He acts all proper and in control, but he can’t even handle himself! And then he sleeps with you and had the nerve to forget it?! God! Seriously!” She threw her hands up, fuming. “And you! You knew he was drunk, but you still spread your legs for him! Even if you’re married, that’s not okay! Look what happened—he can’t even remember popping your cherry, and he literally shot his load inside you!”

I looked down, ashamed. She sighed again after seeing me fall silent. For all her harsh words, I knew deep down she was just worried about me.

“But hey, look at the bright side,” she said softly after a moment. “You’re finally carrying my brother’s child. Dad’s going to be thrilled when he hears the news.”

I looked up weakly. “I guess…”

Leila took my hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “And you know, our family has good genes! You’re not exactly losing here! Who knows, the baby might even look like my handsome brother, right? Tan skin, green eyes, that soft brown hair with those little curls—”

“Lei, please.” I sighed, trying to stop her. “I know you’re just trying to cheer me up, but this isn’t the time. I don’t care who the baby takes after. I’m more worried about Lorenzo’s reaction. Your dad might be happy, but Lorenzo…” I swallowed hard. “He’s different.”

She sighed again, and I could see the concern flicker in her eyes. She may not say it, but I could feel she was genuinely worried about me. Then her expression turned serious.

“Listen, AD,” she began softly. “I know you and my brother aren’t exactly on good terms. I know it’s an arranged marriage, but maybe… you could give him a chance. I’m sure he’ll be happy once he finds out. After all, this is his child we’re talking about. Who knows? Maybe this baby could be the bridge that brings you two closer and helps make your marriage work.”

I wanted to believe her. I really did. But the fear inside me was stronger.

I wanted to tell Lorenzo about my pregnancy, but at the same time, I was terrified. I couldn’t bring myself to tell him yet. I needed time, especially after everything he’s done. He doesn’t care about me. And even if this baby is his flesh and blood... will he really love it? Will he even care that it exists?

What if he doesn’t? I don’t think I could handle that.

“Lei…” I looked at her desperately. “Please. Don’t tell anyone about my pregnancy yet. Not even your dad. I just... I need time to process this. Please, Lei.”

Leila hesitated for a moment, studying my face. Then she finally nodded. I let out a sigh of relief. At least I could count on her.

“My brother has the right to know,” she said carefully. “But I’ll respect your decision for now. Just remember, though—no secret lasts forever in this family. Sooner or later, they’ll find out, especially Dad. You know how much he expects from this marriage. It might be better if you tell them soon.”

I nodded, grateful for her understanding.

I’ll tell them… just not yet.
