Sinclair POV

Isaiah heard more than he should have at the end of my conversation with Kaia. Now he is asking me about the trackers I found in my car.

“Honestly, I have it handled, Isaiah.” I said.

“Listen, Kaia and you are close, right?” Isaiah asked.

I raised an eyebrow, “Yeah. Best friends. She would even say we are soul sisters.”

“What kind of mate would I be if I didn’t look out for her sister then?” he replied.

I smiled, “I am going to love seeing how your relationship with her unfolds.”

He is already thinking about the people who are most important to her. I am one of the very few and I feel honored that I am. She is important to me too; just like a sister would be for most people.

Isaiah smirked, “I’m sure it will be like oil and vinegar. In any event, you are also a pack member. We look out for our own. So, tell me about the trackers.”

I chuckled, “Oil and vinegar make for a great salad dressing. It can complement one another under the right circumstances, Isaiah. As far as the trackers, I found five in my car.”

“Five?” Isaiah’s eyes darkened. “Who the fuck puts five trackers in a person’s car?”

“That’s what I’m going to find out. I pulled them all out and disabled them. Then I took a picture of each one for the make and serial number. I am going to hack into the database and figure out who got them and then go from there.”

“You think you are doing this by yourself?” Isaiah asked incredulously.

“Um, yeah.” I said with a sarcastic face. “Isaiah, I know you are going into protector mode, but honestly, before you were in my life or even Kaia’s life, we were handling things on our own.”

Isaiah sat back, “How long have you both been doing this type of work?”

“Since we turned eighteen. Three years now.” I said.

“In three years, you have been able to do all these things? Hack systems, improve security and defenses, find digital threats and train to fight and kill?”

“Why does that sound impossible to you?”

“It’s not, but it sure as hell wouldn’t be easy to do in three years, Sinclair.” Isaiah said.

“It’s only impossible when you have other options in your life, Isaiah. I certainly didn’t have other options. I learned on my own. Kaia had options but no one cared to hear what she wanted. So, she made do with what she could do without getting anyone else’s buy-in.” I said.

“Tell me about her husband. Do you know him?” He asked.

“No. Kaia has always kept that part of her life private.” I said and then added. “She did confess that she had hoped to make it work with him in the beginning, but he always looked down on her and insulted her.”

I see Isaiah’s eyes turn dark. He clearly doesn’t like hearing that Kaia is being mistreated. I approve of his behavior towards her so far.

“He doesn’t abuse her, does he?” He asked and his voice was tight. I feel bad that I have to keep him in the dark.

“Aside from the emotional and mental, no. According to Kaia, he has never touched her.” I said.

Isaiah sighed and nodded. “Okay. Promise me that if you find out she is being abused, you will tell me. I will protect her.”

I laughed softly, “Kaia will wipe the floor with any person who tries to hurt her, Isaiah. If anything, you’d have to pull her off someone, not the other way around.”

Isaiah smiles and I think there is a glint of pride in his eyes. That’s good. All this conversation is good for assessing him. I want him to be good to my friend. She is important to me, and I want to see her happy.

As we are wrapping up our conversation, Rodrigo comes over. “Hey. I didn’t want to interrupt your conversation, but I thought I would come over and say hi.” He said.

I smiled, “Sure. Sit. How are things with the laptop? Any alerts?”

Rodrigo smiled widely. It kind of reminds me of Thalia’s smile. You can tell they are related. “Not a peep. Everything you did is working. It was really impressive.” He said.

“Good. If you get an alert, let me know. I will have fun playing my own version of ‘Battleship’.” I said with a little laugh.

“Will do.” He said.

I looked at both Isaiah and Rodrigo. “As much as I would love to continue talking, I need to work on my car. I have quite a few things to go over.” I stood up and got ready to leave, but my phone buzzed.

When I saw the caller ID, I pressed the decline button and put my phone away.

“Who just called to make your eyes darken like that?” Rodrigo asked. When I look up, both he and Isaiah are looking at me.

“No one important.” I said. “I’m going outside now. Later.”

As I am making my way outside, my phone once again started ringing. I see the caller ID and I ignore it again. After a few moments, my phone buzzed. This time a text message came through.

[Chad: Dad wants you home. Now.]

[Sinclair: I said I was leaving permanently. I meant it.]

[Chad: Dad said that if you want to know about your birth parents, you need to come back. Now.]

I stopped and read that again. He has had information on my parents all this time and never told me? I could have looked for my parents. I feel anger rising inside of me and my hands start shaking. I feel tears threatening to fall too.

“Sinclair?” I heard Isaiah behind me. When I turned and looked at him his expression went from curious to concerned very quickly. “What’s wrong? What happened?” He said rushing over to me.

“I need to leave for a while. I have something important to do.” I said.

“Sinclair, what is going on?”

“Nothing. Business that I thought was finished isn’t finished yet. I’m going to get an overnight bad ready. I need to leave.”

Jonah walks up, “Hey Sinclair!” He says cheerfully, until he sees my face and then his expression darkens. “What happened?”

I take a deep breath, “Nothing. I need to leave for a couple of days. I will be back.” I said.

I walked past both Isaiah and Jonah and I can feel their eyes on me as I walk away. I looked down at my phone and reply to my asshole foster brother. That’s not even an accurate description of who he is to me. He is just an asshole.

[Sinclair: I’m not exactly close by. I’ll be there in a couple of days.]

[Chad: That’s my Sinner. See you then.]

“Sinclair?”

I turned around and I saw Isaiah. I sighed, “Yeah?”

“How about we take the jet? I will go with you, and we can be back this evening. I don’t think you should go alone.” He said.

I guess this is what belonging feels like. Someone actually caring about what happens to you. It warms my heart to be a part of this pack.

I smiled gently at Isaiah. “Okay.”

  • His Clever Mate (Book 3: The 'His' Series)   Chapter 147: Uh-oh

Kaia POVYesterday was the funeral. Everyone was sad. It’s expected. It seemed split, though. It seems there was some sadness over Amber’s death, but most of it was over Adrian. We all know what he suffered during his time with Amber.Isaiah told me what he and Adrian talked about. It’s understandable why he was so heartbroken. He said some kind words about Amber, and as the funeral was ending, her aunt showed up.Apparently, Isaiah helped Adrian locate her. Her eyes were swollen from crying, but she was quiet. Later, she and Adrian went to talk. When they came back, she looked somber. Adrian must have told her everything, and she must feel bad about her niece’s actions. We put her in a room in the pack house until we can hear from Sinclair. Once she confirms his location, she will update us. It seems strange that it is taking this long, though. I would have thought she would have had information by early afternoon.I’m walking towards Isaiah’s office to see if he has heard from Sincl

  • His Clever Mate (Book 3: The 'His' Series)   Chapter 146: Kid Gloves

Isaiah POVI’m talking to Aiden in my office when Kaia walks in. She is wearing black stretch pants and a black maternity dress shirt. She is ready for the funeral as well. She also has her phone in her hand."Guys, I updated Sinclair. She said she is closing in on Ronan. She needs predictive software. He's bouncing between three different locations, and she wants to understand the pattern.”Aiden answered before me. “Done. Tell her to get it, and I will reimburse the cost.”She sent the message, and within a minute, Sinclair responded. Kaia smiled at the message.“What did she say?” I asked.“She said that she will hopefully have something by tomorrow.”“That fast?” Aiden asked, surprised.“Once she figured out the best way to track that bastard, it became easy for her. We will get him.”From behind us, we heard Adrian. “Sinclair found him?”Kaia answered. “Almost. Hopefully by tomorrow.”“Then I’m not leaving until we know for sure,” he said determinedly.Aiden stood up. “Adrian, yo

  • His Clever Mate (Book 3: The 'His' Series)   Chapter 145: Closing In

Sinclair POVI’m in the woods, letting Mali run. We are feeling the air whip through our fur. I’m smiling. I feel carefree. I feel…content.I see a pond. It looks serene. Honeysuckle vines are climbing up trees, and bushes are everywhere, releasing a sweet smell. The pond looks like glass, and I can see the clouds reflected in the sky above it. It looks almost too perfect.I hear rustling behind one of the trees. Mali takes a defensive stance.‘What is it, Mali?’‘I don’t know. Something doesn’t feel right. This whole place doesn’t feel right.’The rustling continues, and in the distance, a man appears. He looks pained…hurt. I stay still. He comes towards me. But then, there is another person with him. A woman. She has a black ring around her neck. What the hell is this? They don’t seem to notice me. I don’t want them to notice me either.‘Mali, let’s go.’But Mali doesn’t move. She tilts her head, looking at the man and woman in the distance. She is very interested in the scene unfol

  • His Clever Mate (Book 3: The 'His' Series)   Chapter 144: Revenge

Isaiah POVWhen I got the text from Adrian, I knew something was terribly wrong. Kaia saw, rather felt, my anxiety.“What’s wrong?” she asked.“Adrian said the mate bond snapped with Amber and that her wolf was gone. Doctors and nurses were in her room, treating her.”She sucked in a breath. “She’s gone, isn’t she?”“I think so, but Adrian hasn’t confirmed. I told him to call Aiden.”“You should call Aiden. Adrian isn’t thinking straight.”She’s right, so I called Aiden.“Hey, bro. What’s up?”“Adrian needs us. Can you get to Ironclaw?”“What happened?” Aiden asked seriously.I told him about the text messages and what Kaia and I are thinking. He growled low. “Son of a bitch. I’m on my way. Is Sinclair still searching for Ronan?”“Yeah. She opted to stay behind to continue her search. We are going back next week to bring her back,” I replied.“Okay. I’ll call her and tell her I want daily status updates on Ronan. That bastard is going to pay.”“Damn right he is,” I said. “I’ll meet yo

  • His Clever Mate (Book 3: The 'His' Series)   Chapter 143: Gone?

Adrian POVI stood there, trying to understand what he just said. “What do you mean, gone? She was doing better. How is she now gone?”He took a deep breath and started explaining. “Her vitals went into cardiac distress and oxygen deprivation from one moment to the next. That’s usually an indicator of a blood clot. Ultimately, she suffered a cardiac arrest. We were trying to locate the clot in time, but we were too late. I’m so sorry for your loss, Alpha.”My world just stopped. She’s gone. Not gone like, moved away, and it’s for the best, gone. No. She is GONE. Dead. I will never see her again. Even if I didn’t want to see her again, there would never be an option for that to happen later.I feel the room around me spin. My legs are going weak. I haphazardly make out the doctor grabbing me and guiding me to a chair. My body feels dead inside. Thor is whimpering in my head.“I hate that I loved you.”Those were my last words to her. Oh, Goddess! That’s the last memory either of us had

  • His Clever Mate (Book 3: The 'His' Series)   Chapter 142: That’s not possible

Adrian POVI didn’t go back to the hospital after my last conversation with Amber. I just couldn’t keep pretending. I couldn’t keep sitting there and talking to her while my very soul felt like it was being crushed.I feel bad for being harsh with her, though. I don’t hate her, but I no longer love her either. I hate the things she did that led to all of this. It’s been two days since I last saw her, and I decided that today, I would apologize to her for my harsh words. I will tell her that I do not love her, but I don’t hate her either. I just don’t have the energy to care anymore. The rejection will need to be clean and swift. I am contemplating calling her aunt. She was the only person in her family who was nice to Amber. I can at least make the arrangements for her aunt to come get her and take her away to heal after the rejection.‘You’re kinder than most, just doing that for her,’ Thor said.‘It’s the only kindness I can give, Thor. Her cruelty far outshines mine.’‘Agreed.’I g

Sinclair POV Chad scoffed as he went to grab my arm. I moved and shoved my palm right in his nose.
