I'm naked and spread-eagled on the bed.

My hands are anchored above my head to the heavy wooden headboard, my legs parted and vulnerable to the cool penthouse air.

And I am aching.

A deep, desperate, hollow throb is pulsing right between my thighs, so intense it makes my entire body tremble against the black Egyptian cotton sheets. My pussy clenches over nothing, slick and humming around the tiny, relentless bullet vibrator buried deep inside me.

Every nerve ending is on fire, begging for the one thing—the one man—who's currently seated on a chair, holding a sleek black remote in one hand, nursing a glass of scotch in the other, and watching me squirm like I'm his favorite show.

He is raw, masculine perfection.

Fully shirtless, his broad shoulders taper into a dangerously narrow waist, his chest and abs carved with hard, visible muscle that glistens under the low amber lights filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind him.

Lower down, a pair of loose, black lounge pants ride sinfully low on his hip bones, exposing the razor-sharp V-lines of his lower abdomen—and the dark, intricate ink of a tattoo that stretches like a shadow from his lower ribs, curving all the way around his torso and up his broad back. The discipline required to have a body like that is mind-boggling.

And then there’s the contrast that drives me completely out of my mind: sitting perched on the bridge of his nose is a pair of thin, silver wire-frame glasses.

The sharp, intellectual frames are a wicked contradiction to the sheer strength of his body. They give him the look of a ruthless, calculating strategist who could cold-bloodedly strip a company of its assets in a boardroom—right before he pins you to a mattress and makes you forget your own name.

Rowan depresses his thumb on the remote, bumping the vibration up a single, agonizing notch. A muffled gasp tears from my throat as the sharp buzz sends a wave of liquid heat straight up my spine. He takes a slow, unhurried sip of his scotch, his dark eyes, magnified behind those delicate lenses, tracking every single twitch of my thighs, every frantic heave of my chest, the clamps around my nipples. My hands pull at the restraints around my wrists.

"Still fighting the ties, sweetheart?"

His deep voice is as smooth as velvet. Calm. Disciplined. Completely in control.

I stop moving. "No," I rasp. My toes curl tightly against the relentless pressure in my core.

"No?" A slow, dark smirk curves his lips. He sets the scotch glass down on the side table with a quiet clink. "Because from where I'm sitting, it looks like you're still trying to dictate the terms."

He turns up the pressure by a dial. I throw my head back and cry out as sparks dance behind my eyelids.

"Look at me, sweetheart," he orders. I force my eyes open in obedience. "Remember, you do not come until I allow it," he reminds me.

"Please, Rowan. I'm burning up," I whimper, arching my back, my hips tilting upward in an embarrassingly needy plea for relief. "T-turn it off."

He tsks and slowly rises to his feet, all six-foot-five-inches of him towering over the bed. "Still trying to dictate the terms,” he insists. “What am I going to do with you, sweetheart?"

He steps toward the bed with the deliberate, predatory grace of a man who already owns every inch of the territory.

When he climbs onto the bed, crawling over me until his broad frame traps me against the sheets, the cool air vanishes, replaced instantly by the overwhelming heat of his bare skin and the rich scent of cedarwood and mint. The soft fabric of his low-slung pants rides against the bare skin of my inner thighs, teasingly close to where I'm dripping for him.

His calloused hand moves up my ribcage, slow and heavy, his fingers brush teasingly against my clamped nipples before his long fingers wrap firmly around my throat. He exerts enough pressure to make me feel lightheaded.

"You have no idea what you stepped into, Joanna," he rumbles, leaning down until his lips brush the hypersensitive shell of my ear. The cool metallic rim of his wire-frame glasses brushes my cheekbone, sending a violent shiver straight down my spine. "You think this is just a quick thrill. But it's going to be so much fun turning you into my obedient sub... stripping away every last bit of control you think you have until you're begging me for rules."

A sharp gasp escapes my throat, my pulse hammering wildly against his palm at the dark promise in his voice.

"Starting with how you address me in this bed," he adds smoothly, his thumb tracing the swollen line of my lower lip. "You don't call me Rowan when you're tied to my headboard. Is that clear?”

“Y-yes…,” I whisper.

He stares down at me, his whiskey eyes sparkling with challenge and dark amusement. Then I hear another click of the controller. The vibration between my legs kicks up another notch.

Rowan lets out a low, dark chuckle that vibrates right through my chest as I let out a broken moan. My vision becomes hazy and hooded.

I bite my lower lip, steeling myself against the orgasm that’s threatening to rip through me.

His fingers tighten around my jaw, tilting my head back to force my eyes to lock onto his behind those sharp lenses.

"Look at me," he commands softly, the absolute authority in his voice leaving zero room for resistance. "No hiding. No second-guessing. No coming until I tell you to. Tonight, your mind belongs to you, but this sweet, aching body is my prisoner."

His dark gaze burns into mine with a promise of complete, breathtaking surrender.

"Tell me who owns you tonight, sweetheart. And say it properly."

"Y-you do," I pant, my heart racing a mile a minute. "You do... Sir."

"Good girl," he purrs against my lips, just before his mouth slams onto mine.

  • His Darkest Obsession (Haunted Kings #1)   Chapter 8: CLARK KENT!

JOANNA I take another sip of my champagne and immediately remember why I don’t drink champagne. It tastes like sparkling disappointment. Then again, maybe my taste buds just aren’t rich enough. Around me, Icarus gleams. Everything about the club screams obscene wealth. The ceiling disappears into darkness broken by cascading crystal lights. Marble floors reflect designer heels and polished Italian leather shoes. Every other person I glance at looks like they either owns a private jet, models for Vogue, or has inherited enough money to casually buy a small country. Women glide past in dresses that undoubtedly cost more than my entire wardrobe combined. One of them is wearing what looks suspiciously like actual diamonds sewn into her dress. I stare for an extra second. Yep. Definitely diamonds. Meanwhile, I’m silently praying nobody spills some expensive thing on my dress. It’s a direct result of a last-minute shopping splurge. And by splurge, I mean a literal financi

  • His Darkest Obsession (Haunted Kings #1)   Chapter 7: WHERE ARE YOU GOING, THORNE?

ROWAN Wealth attracts exactly three kinds of people. Those born into it, those who built it, and those desperately trying to be photographed beside it. Icarus has managed to gather all three under one roof tonight. From our glass-walled mezzanine in the VIP section, the entire spectacle looks less like a high-profile launch party and more like a beautifully curated zoo. Downstairs, a world-famous DJ is currently committing crimes against music, blasting bass so loud it vibrates through the leather of our booth. Influencers pose in front of the marble staircase as though they’d personally commissioned the architecture, nepo babies loudly discuss "investments" funded entirely by their parents' trust accounts, and models drift between tables wearing dresses worth more than the average Manhattan mortgage. Luca calls it networking. I call it overpopulation. “If you stare any harder at that railing, Thorne, you're going to burn a hole through the steel," a voice drawls in a

  • His Darkest Obsession (Haunted Kings #1)   Chapter 6: ABSOLUTE TRAITORS

JOANNA[One month later...] There are exactly three things I’ve learned over the last month. One: heartbreak is apparently not a straight line. Two: blocking your ex means absolutely nothing if you’re the idiot who keeps unblocking him at two in the morning just to see if he looks miserable. Three: Kenneth looks annoyingly well-rested in selfies. I block him again. Hopefully for the last time. “…And blocked,” I mutter triumphantly, tossing my phone onto the nearest chair before temptation can strike again. Ria, who’s currently stealing fries off my plate from across the kitchen island, raises an unimpressed eyebrow. “That’s what you said last Thursday, and the Tuesday before that, and the Sunday before that.” I glare at her and she blinks at me innocently. “Well, I mean it this time.” She pops another fry into her mouth. “I’ll believe it when your thumb develops self-control.” “…Rude.” She grins. The annoying thing is…She’s right. Recovery hasn’t been some dramatic movie

  • His Darkest Obsession (Haunted Kings #1)   Chapter 5: JOANNA, GET A GRIP

JOANNA “Ria, wait—" My voice comes out as a pathetic, dry rasp, completely lacking the strength to cut through the sudden spike of adrenaline in the air. Ria doesn't hear me. She steps directly into the stranger’s space, her small frame vibrating with a terrifying, protective fury. Her midnight-black hair practically crackles as she glares up at him, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. Her shoulders squared like she’s ready to commit a felony on my behalf. God, I love her. “I said, what the fuck are you doing, stranger?” she demands. Only then does he take a step back. The movement creates space between us I’d barely realized he’d invaded. I suck in a steadier breath. He doesn’t look offended. Or intimidated. He simply turns to face Ria, one slow movement at a time, until I fully appreciate just how unfairly tall he is. Good Lord. He has at least half a foot on her. He raises both hands, palms open. A universal gesture of surrender. "I'm not touc

  • His Darkest Obsession (Haunted Kings #1)   Chapter 4: WHO TF ARE YOU?

ROWAN Numbers are clean, logical, and entirely devoid of emotion. That is why I like them. Algorithmic forecasting models don’t have a fragile ego. They certainly don’t call you at midnight to remind you that your older brother has just successfully resected a glioblastoma while you are merely "playing with spreadsheets." I push my glasses up the bridge of my nose, ignoring the faint vibration of my phone in my breast pocket. It's my mother. Again. Calling, I'm sure, to remind me about Julian’s celebratory dinner. A dinner I plan on skipping because a room full of arrogant neurosurgeons is a special kind of hell I lack the patience for. I just haven't gotten around to telling her that I won't be there. It'll break her heart, for sure, but she'll be the only one to miss me there. I sit on my barstool in the dim, leather-scented quiet of the financial district’s most discreet lounge, nursing a scotch as I go through the stock market charts on my tablet. After the shitt

  • His Darkest Obsession (Haunted Kings #1)   Chapter 3: I'M GOING TO THROW UP

JOANNAFor two full weeks, I exist in a liminal space of heavy, dreamless sleep and waking numbness. I exist entirely in oversized sweatpants, watching the shadows shift across my bedroom ceiling while playing the last year of my life on a torturous loop. I try as much as I can to block out the world. I try not to look at social media, but I can’t help stalking Paula's Ins.tag.ram. I feel bitter envy as I scroll through the pretty selfies she’s posted, and I am very analytical in comparing her looks with mine. Maybe if I was thinner and had clearer skin, Ken wouldn’t have thought twice before setting those boundaries with her. I’m also ashamed to say this (and I can’t even let Ria know about it), but I unblocked him sometime ago, desperate to hear from him. He’s called and texted, but I haven’t picked up any calls or replied any of his texts. Am I crazy for unblocking my emotional cheater ex so I can feel better about myself whenever his name lights up my phone screen? Yeah, I
