LOGIN"She's choking!" I heard someone scream.
I coughed violently, my entire body jerking as water forced its way out of my mouth. My lungs burned like someone had set them on fire. “Breathe,” a voice said. “Stay with me.” I sucked in a sharp breath, only to choke again, more water spilling out as I gasped. “Fuck…” I wheezed, clutching at the sand beneath me. I was alive. I blinked rapidly, my vision spinning. Everything started to come into focus. There were people hovering around me… too many faces. Why were there so many people? My head hurts. I covered my face. “Hey, give her some space,” the same voice snapped. A shadow moved in front of me, blocking out most of the faces. “Back up!” he screamed at them. The crowd started to scatter. Good. Because if one more person stared at me like I was some kind of roadside accident, I was going to lose my shit. I coughed again, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. I finally looked up. I swallowed. He was not what I expected. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark hair that looked slightly messy, like he couldn’t be stressed about it. He crouched in front of me as his brown eyes roamed my body. “Are you okay?” I nodded. “Someone you can call?” I almost laughed at that. I couldn’t call Ronan, of course. The only person I had left to call was Maya and yeah, she would have answered if only we weren't quarrelling. We usually had some misunderstandings but this last one? It had been going on for two months. So, I couldn't call her. I didn't know if that decision came from pride or shame. Whatever. I remembered the day we fought just as clearly as daylight. “You are being stupid, Lyra.” “Excuse me?” “I’m serious. That guy is just using you, and you are letting him.” “Using me? Maya, that’s wild,” I had argued. “Just because you’ve been used and dumped your whole life doesn’t mean he would do the same with me.” Yeah, that was our last discussion and she never called me again. “You can leave,” I said after a while. “I’d be fine, really.” How else would I tell him that I had someone and I pushed her away for a man who just… I clenched my jaw. He stood and offered me his hand. “You are stuck with me.” I laughed. “I don’t even know you.” His eyes narrowed, hurt flashing through his eyes for a moment. “I’m Victor….” Wait… I looked at him properly this time. “Oh shit,” I said. “You’re Ronan’s friend?” He smiled. I knew the both of them were entirely separate beings but then a twinge of hurt spread across my chest as it reminded me of Ronan again. Before I could ask anything else because I had lots of them, he gestured toward the packing area. “Let’s go,” he murmured. “You need to get out of these wet clothes before you catch something” “I’m f…” “Don’t dare tell me that you are fine again,” he leaned closer. “Can’t you accept help for once?” I stiffened. Reluctantly, I had to get in his car. I was worried that I would get his car wet but then he told me not to worry about it. His car was as ridiculous as you’d expect. Sleek, expensive, probably worth more than my entire existence. I wasn’t really so close to Victor. Ronan never really introduced me to most of his friends, he only talked about them to me. I didn’t know he was this freaking rich. He drove me home and he allowed me to take a shower and gave me a loose gown that might probably be for his girlfriend or his sister. I didn’t ask because I didn’t want to hear the answer. I quickly put on the dress and went to join him downstairs. He was sitting down at the dining table, I joined him and he pushed a cup of juice to me. I shook my head. “Vodka?” He smiled and went to get it for me. “So,” he said as he took his seat. “You gonna tell me what really happened?” I stared out the window. “I slipped.” “Right.” I rolled my eyes. “What do you want me to say? That I dramatically ran into the ocean because my life is falling apart?” He shrugged. “That would be a start.” Damn him. I sighed. “Fine, I left Ronan’s house.” His hands tightened around the cup like he already knew what happened. “I’m sorry.” “About what?” “C’mon drop the act now,” he said, tilting his head. “He told me yesterday that he was going to propose to Elara. I guess he finally broke the news to you.” I looked away from him. “I knew you loved him.” I froze. “What…” I scoffed. “I…” He walked closer to me and my heart began to beat faster. He stopped in front of me, barely an inch between us now. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ears. “He’s a fool you know.” I frowned. “Ronan,” he said. “He’s a fool for not realizing the gem that he has with him.” My chest tightened as I took another sip of the vodka. I let out a breath. “You can stay here” My jaw dropped. “What?” “I know you need…” I shook my head. “No…I’m not doing that. I’m not relying on anyone again.” “Who said anything about relying?” he asked, his lips curving up. “You’ll pay rent.”I didn’t think Victor actually meant what he said. That he would help me get back at his friend. It didn’t make sense.I rolled out of bed and dragged myself to the bathroom, brushing my teeth like a zombie before crawling back under the sheets. My phone was in my hand before I even realized it.I was hoping. Still hoping.Maybe an apology… a message… anything from Ronan.Nothing.“Fuck you, Ronan.” The words tasted bitter in my mouth. The ache in my chest only grew heavier as I stood and reached for the bottle of alcohol I had hidden away.Thank God Victor wasn’t here to lecture me about wasting my life when it was the only thing numbing the pain right now.I took a long gulp. Then another.Scrolling through the internet was a mistake. Everywhere I looked, their engagement was trending. Headlines calling it the most romantic proposal Miami had ever seen.Romantic.The audacity of that jerk measuring my finger like that… God. That was the part that hurt the most.My phone rang just as
Maya was right. I just couldn’t take this and I needed to make a plan but before I had even thought of one, I had already drowned four bottles of alcohol and still thinking, ‘yeah, one more might fix this.’Maya had left after she had a call from her current boyfriend. She didn’t stay long enough for me to get his name. My head spun slightly. Even still drunk, I could still see that stupid video playing in my head. The way he looked at her. I took another sip. “Idiot,” I whispered. “You’re such a fucking idiot.”Then the door opened. I didn’t bother looking up but I knew it was Victor who was back from his law firm. “Lyra,” he said, voice barely audible. His eyes scanned the room, the bottles, the glass and me sitting on the floor like I had lost a fight with life. His jaw tightened. He looked at me mortified but I was honestly too tired to care. I lifted the glass slightly. Before it touched my lips, he snatched the cup from my hand. “Hey…” I tried to grab it back but he move
Ring. Ring. Ring.I groaned, dragging the pillow over my head. I waited for the phone to stop ringing but it didn’t. I blindly reached for it and then I saw the name. Maya. “What the hell?” I muttered, sitting up immediately. Maya was calling me?My chest tightened, something must be wrong, like very wrong. I picked it anyway. “Hello?”“Where are you?”I winced, pulling the phone from my ear. “Wow. Good morning to you too.”“Don’t play with me, Lyra,” Maya snapped. “What happened between you and Ronan?”I froze. She hated talking about Ronan. Did everyone know about the fact that I left his house? And even if she heard about it, Maya wouldn’t just call me because of that. “I don’t under…”“What did he do?” she asked again. “Okay I don’t understand. You hated the both of us together and now, you are calling… Why are you even asking me that?”There was a pause. “You seriously don’t know?”“Know what?” I said, my voice rising. “Maya, it’s too early for riddles. Say what you want

Ronan walked out on me, leaving me standing in the room like an idiot. Wow, I should have seen this sooner. My chest hurt like hell, but I forced a laugh anyway. It was the only thing I could do right now. I was in the middle of changing my clothes when I heard someone screaming my name. A frantic knock came on my door. “Lyra!” I froze. The door burst open and one of the maids rushed in, Maria, her face pale. “Miss Lyra, please… Madam is having another episode!”Oh shit! I shoved everything aside as I started moving. I didn’t even bother to zip my top and rushed out of the room. Because no matter what happened between the both of us… his mother needed me and that was the fucked up part. I still cared. Margaret, Ronan’s mother had taken care of me like her own daughter. I felt like I owed her a lot and there was nothing I could do to pay it back. She was gasping when I got there, her weak body trembling against the bed as she clutched her chest. “Mrs. Cole,” I said quickly, mo
Lyra:I was still smelling of sweat and sex. There was this kind of feeling that I usually get when we just finished having sex, but I wasn't feeling it. I mean, me and my best friend Ronan… the way he usually held me after and I knew anyone would think, your best friend? You think you are going to end up together?I never questioned it before. Not until today. He rolled away from the bed while I lay there staring at the ceiling, my chest still rising too fast. “Ronan?” I nudged his arm with my foot. “You’re being weird. What’s wrong?”He didn’t look at me. Just sat up, dragged a hand through his perfectly styled hair, already slipping back into that composed version of himself that he wore most times when he was talking to his father. “This is over,” he said. My breath caught. “We are done,” he repeated like I didn’t hear him the first time.I scoffed. “Done with what?”He finally glanced back at me, like he was annoyed I needed clarification. “This. Us. Whatever you thought
