Mag-log in"She's choking!" I heard someone scream.
I coughed violently, my entire body jerking as water forced its way out of my mouth. My lungs burned like someone had set them on fire. “Breathe,” a voice said. “Stay with me.” I sucked in a sharp breath, only to choke again, more water spilling out as I gasped. “Fuck…” I wheezed, clutching at the sand beneath me. I was alive. I blinked rapidly, my vision spinning. Everything started to come into focus. There were people hovering around me… too many faces. Why were there so many people? My head hurts. I covered my face. “Hey, give her some space,” the same voice snapped. A shadow moved in front of me, blocking out most of the faces. “Back up!” he screamed at them. The crowd started to scatter. Good. Because if one more person stared at me like I was some kind of roadside accident, I was going to lose my shit. I coughed again, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. I finally looked up. I swallowed. He was not what I expected. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark hair that looked slightly messy, like he couldn’t be stressed about it. He crouched in front of me as his brown eyes roamed my body. “Are you okay?” I nodded. “Someone you can call?” I almost laughed at that. I couldn’t call Ronan, of course. The only person I had left to call was Maya and yeah, she would have answered if only we weren't quarrelling. We usually had some misunderstandings but this last one? It had been going on for two months. So, I couldn't call her. I didn't know if that decision came from pride or shame. Whatever. I remembered the day we fought just as clearly as daylight. “You are being stupid, Lyra.” “Excuse me?” “I’m serious. That guy is just using you, and you are letting him.” “Using me? Maya, that’s wild,” I had argued. “Just because you’ve been used and dumped your whole life doesn’t mean he would do the same with me.” Yeah, that was our last discussion and she never called me again. “You can leave,” I said after a while. “I’d be fine, really.” How else would I tell him that I had someone and I pushed her away for a man who just… I clenched my jaw. He stood and offered me his hand. “You are stuck with me.” I laughed. “I don’t even know you.” His eyes narrowed, hurt flashing through his eyes for a moment. “I’m Victor….” Wait… I looked at him properly this time. “Oh shit,” I said. “You’re Ronan’s friend?” He smiled. I knew the both of them were entirely separate beings but then a twinge of hurt spread across my chest as it reminded me of Ronan again. Before I could ask anything else because I had lots of them, he gestured toward the packing area. “Let’s go,” he murmured. “You need to get out of these wet clothes before you catch something” “I’m f…” “Don’t dare tell me that you are fine again,” he leaned closer. “Can’t you accept help for once?” I stiffened. Reluctantly, I had to get in his car. I was worried that I would get his car wet but then he told me not to worry about it. His car was as ridiculous as you’d expect. Sleek, expensive, probably worth more than my entire existence. I wasn’t really so close to Victor. Ronan never really introduced me to most of his friends, he only talked about them to me. I didn’t know he was this freaking rich. He drove me home and he allowed me to take a shower and gave me a loose gown that might probably be for his girlfriend or his sister. I didn’t ask because I didn’t want to hear the answer. I quickly put on the dress and went to join him downstairs. He was sitting down at the dining table, I joined him and he pushed a cup of juice to me. I shook my head. “Vodka?” He smiled and went to get it for me. “So,” he said as he took his seat. “You gonna tell me what really happened?” I stared out the window. “I slipped.” “Right.” I rolled my eyes. “What do you want me to say? That I dramatically ran into the ocean because my life is falling apart?” He shrugged. “That would be a start.” Damn him. I sighed. “Fine, I left Ronan’s house.” His hands tightened around the cup like he already knew what happened. “I’m sorry.” “About what?” “C’mon drop the act now,” he said, tilting his head. “He told me yesterday that he was going to propose to Elara. I guess he finally broke the news to you.” I looked away from him. “I knew you loved him.” I froze. “What…” I scoffed. “I…” He walked closer to me and my heart began to beat faster. He stopped in front of me, barely an inch between us now. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ears. “He’s a fool you know.” I frowned. “Ronan,” he said. “He’s a fool for not realizing the gem that he has with him.” My chest tightened as I took another sip of the vodka. I let out a breath. “You can stay here” My jaw dropped. “What?” “I know you need…” I shook my head. “No…I’m not doing that. I’m not relying on anyone again.” “Who said anything about relying?” he asked, his lips curving up. “You’ll pay rent.”It was a good thing our marriage wasn't normal, as I could easily turn this into a business arrangement. He protects my family, and I would be willing to give him a second child as soon as this one arrived. So I put it on the table, but it turned out to offend him.“You still think this is just business?”“Well, I… we didn't talk about titles yet.”“This is real. We are making it work. Now, this woman—who took the DNA results? Are you sure they're not tampered with?”“I only did the DNA test to confirm it, but I recognized her as soon as I met her.”“You know, Ronan once asked me to look into someone. The way he spoke, I figured it was your mother, but I never found anything.”“Yeah, she's good.” I attempted to make a joke.“Lyra, I've done this many times. I work with detectives who can find anyone from any part of the continent with just their first name. If they didn't find her back then, then I don't know.”“Clara, she's my sister. Well, she's adopted, but yes, she's the one who t
I was in shock.I honestly couldn't believe it, that after so many years of being like an orphan, I had finally found my mother.“It's her, Lyra. Carol Smith is your mother,” Ronan said.At that point, my eyes had already filled with tears. I blinked, but more tears just kept forming.I was Lyra Smith.Even though I was very young when I was left on the streets, I was smart enough to know my last name, so I kept using it. And before you ask, yes, I tried everything myself and eventually found my identity papers.“Are you alright?” Ronan asked again. I shook my head. I couldn't lie to him. I was so confused right now.“I don't know what to do. What... what do people with mothers do?”“Spend time with them?” Ronan also didn't know. I mean, he was honestly the wrong person to talk to about this considering he didn't grow up like a normal child. “She took years to find you, Lyra, so you have the right to react however you want. Your feelings are justified.”“I have so many questions for h
Okay, no one needed to explain what was happening. Elara was clearly trying to threaten me, or kill me considering how she had almost done exactly that last time. I didn't take her lightly.“What did I do? I promise I'll fix it,” I blurted out.“Oh no, sweetheart, if you give in so quickly, it's not fun.” She sounded psychotic. “See, I found out you and Ronan used to fuck.”“That's all that happened. He has moved on with you. He proposed to you and...” I swallowed. “I'm married now. I'm pregnant with Victor's baby. Believe me, I have no business with Ronan anymore.”“Then what the fuck is he doing here?”“Oh, that. He... Victor... he came to see his friend,” I thought of that excuse quickly.“So there's nothing going on between the two of you?” She finally looked at me.I was so grateful that she was still by the door. She hadn't tried to get any closer.“Nothing.”“I have a tracker on his car. It was in a suspicious neighborhood today and my instincts tell me he went there with you.”
“You… you think Dad is after Mom?” I asked quickly. “That's why her life is in danger?”“It's not my story to tell. Like I told you, I was adopted. I might be family, but I'm not in the state to tell you this.” She sighed. “Now I'll give Daniel Mom's hair and you can do a DNA test then. But until then, please think about taking Mom out of this place, okay?”“Thank you.” I didn't push it. Plus, there was already a knock on the door and it was Victor with Ronan. Ronan was asking him to calm down, but Victor wasn't listening, and from the way they sounded, if I didn't go out there now, they would just murder each other.“Shut the fuck up, Ronan. She's my wife now. I have more right to her than you.”“All I'm saying is Lyra will come out. No need to knock like that.”Before Victor could clap back, I opened the door. He immediately grabbed me and asked if I was okay and, most importantly, what Ronan was doing here.“Ronan just came to bring me something important,” I spoke softly.“Oh, so
These little moments are what I craved with Ronan, but as we all know, he was too busy pleasing his father to even spare me this type of attention.“I… I was at the beach. I had to change my clothes, that’s… that’s why I put on perfume,” I explained even when he didn’t ask.“It’s driving me insane, dear wife.” I giggled at his words and looked away from the mirror. “Hold on…” He turned me around quickly and faced me. “Is my wife shy?”“What?” I laughed. I wasn’t shy, just this type of attention made me blush.“Yes.”“No, I’m not. I just… we are still, I just…”“It’s alright. So, have you thought of us?” He held both my cheeks, and damn, I had forgotten he asked what we were now, that he expected a response when he was back.“To be fair, I thought you’d return in the evening.” I was so good at excuses.“Fair. Alright, I have our food ready, shall we go and eat?”“Actually, I want us to watch a movie.” Again, Ronan didn’t give me these moments, and now that I seemed to have a chance, wh
Just as Clara almost opened her mouth to speak, Mom stopped her.“All she needs to know is that he is not a good man, that's all.”“She is grown enough, she—”“She’s twenty-one.” Mom cut her off. I could try to force Clara to tell me, but I knew she wouldn’t because she sighed when Mom mentioned my age.“Whatever, but if anything happens to her, it's all on you.” Clara stood up and walked toward the kitchen.“She has been protected by the Lord; she will continue to be.” Mom sounded confident and sure. I wanted to hear more, but now my mind was on Victor. If he was home, then surely he spoke to the guards, and I couldn’t imagine what that meant for me.I also stood up and followed Clara to the kitchen side. Mom asked if I had any other questions, but I told her I was good. I had many questions, yes, but I had to leave.“Did Victor also return home?” I asked Clara, and she looked at me without answering.“How even did you marry him?” she asked after a moment, after she took a sip of her
