Prologue

“The lord of werewolves has brought down and dispelled beliefs of more than half of the packs in the surrounding areas. He will keep doing that to packs that keep disobeying his law and order and acting suspicious.” my father, the head of our pack, slumps in the chair as a frustrated groan escapes his lips.

We were all seated in his office, the one belonging to the Alpha of the pack where important decisions were made, the one which my twin brother is meant to share, but looking at him, I was a hundred percent sure that it might never happen. My father being the alpha of the pack is due to his refusal of letting a woman rule his pack, even if that said woman is his daughter and was born as an alpha.

Crazy right, he said and I quote “it is either your brother grows some balls and step up as the stronger one or i die before you reign as alpha.” mind you, my father can be lovable at times but he can be very biased and shallow minded. So upon hearing this, my twin brother Rahil started undergoing some serious, intensive training to become stronger, as he is on the weaker receiving end of the alpha genes.

I wish he could just trust me and my brother to rule as one, but I guess only a male can rule as an alpha. I just hope my brother can reach his expectations and set him out of his misery, because even though he tries not to show it, this particular issue has been troubling him for quite some time now, making him age quickly as gray hairs are slowly replacing his once shiny black hair.

Exasperated, he continued, “lord knows if he continues like this, many lands will be lost and people will be rendered homeless. This means he is going to gain more people, soldiers and mercenaries, as if being the king over all werewolves was not enough now he wants to own us all.”

My mom goes over to his side to calm him down a bit by patting his back where he is seated, “and why does the fact that he is doing this bothers you so much my love or does he having more of these things trouble you?” she asked, but waiting for no reply she continued,

“Besides it’s not like you are doing anything wrong with the way you are running the pack, is there?” she asked calmly.

I and Rahil turned to look at our father to see how he was going to reply to his mate, because for as long as we have known our old man, if there is one thing he hates doing is not reassuring his mate, our mother and his ego.

“It's not that it bothers me or that he is doing this isn't a good thing, it’s just that as an alpha, I am meant to oversee everything happening in our pack, but sometimes it’s not all that possible. Sometimes I am swamped up with work and all, making it hard. So my mind is in turmoil, it keeps asking "what if he comes and sees things he doesn’t like and decides that we are to face punishment, bringing us to nothing?”

As I looked at my father's face as he spoke out his fears, it was then I understood the gravity of it all. Him saying this means that there are some suspicious acts going on in the pack and we are not aware of it.

You see if my father had just taken my idea, maybe none of this would have been of concern. My brother and I could have helped him in overseeing all of this but I guess it can be helped.

Rahil reached for the glass of water and to a sip from it before speaking.

“Although we have not seen him before, being the king of weres does not give him the right to go around vandalizing and destroying peoples homes without conducting proper research. Besides, what makes him think he can come in here and do as he please?, lord or not, we will stand our ground even if he finds something wrong in the pack system”.

I really wish my brother's words could reassure our parents, but even i isn’t reassured. That man has more power that we haven’t really seen, and within the past months, he has gathered more armies to his ever-growing kingdom by taking over these packs.

Every pack falls at his feet no matter how great their fighting skills are, some even surrender, admitting defeat before a fight can even start in fear of losing. The fact that we haven’t seen him, proves how mysterious this man is.

Growing up, we were told stories about the king of werewolves, how gruesome, greedy, sly and arrogant he could be. Sometimes he was likened to a monster who isn’t to be crossed and now I see why people say that. Whatever it is he is doing or thinking he is trying to achieve, i think of him as a greedy criminal too far gone, ready to do whatever it takes to reach his goal and i am sure he won’t stop till he rules over everyone and shows them that he is king.

“My son, I love the bravery you are putting on, but I doubt it will do us any good at this moment. If we want to protect this pack and our family, we have to admit defeat, because unless we comply with his demands…” his voice cracks and i hand him the glass of water which he gulps, while he reaches to give my mom hand which sits on his shoulder a squeeze of assurance. Following his action, my twin and I shared a look waiting for him to speak again.

“I am afraid many, if not all, will fall. Destroyed and perished like they never existed to begin with.”

“When will he be coming?”

I asked, staring at the picture in his office, our family portrait, which depicts the smile on everyone's faces, but that might not be there anymore with the things occuring now. I had to ask because the way my old man talks sounds like the man is around the corner and with the mixed emotions portrayed on his face could only prove that I asked the right question and he was not expecting it.

“In three days.”

“Three days.” my mom and brother all but echoed.

“That isnt enough to prepare for his coming, or a counter attack in case things go south.” my mom said, panicking.

I agree with her, ideally, we need like a week and some days to prepare for his appearance and armies in case things don’t go smoothly as planned. Now I can see why the old man is stressed, all of this is happening too soon.

After a moment of silence, my mother spoke, “okay if he arrives, what will his negotiations entail, what will it mean for us?, our pack? And our babies?”

“Oh my love; it means alot of things, and I don't know if it will affect us positively or we will be in the negative, but whatever it is we must embrace it if we want our pack to exist. Although i am not entirely sure what it means for us, but for our babies, especially Hela…” he cuts himself off

My father gave a look of pity and I knew whatever he was going to vomit from his mouth was not going to be pleasant. Like come on, his eyes alone held so many emotions, he was anxious, sad, worried and…. Afraid? Trying not to overthink what it would mean, I asked, “What do you mean by that father?”

A sigh left his mouth as he gave my mother’s hand another squeeze, “I can't keep this from you guys anymore. When your mom asked what the negotiations entailed, I left out the part that there will be no negotiations and it has already been decided…”

He took a pause looking at our faces trying to see if we were prepared for his next utterance but we were far from prepared for the words he uttered next left all of us hanging our mouths in shock.

“He is coming here to pick a bride and get married.”

I don't know if you could picture how speechless all of us in the room were, like how could he keep such important information to himself for so long, but if it's going to save us from any attack, then we can at least sacrifice that. I know we can do it, we have to do this! There are families relying on us, a pack to protect.

“And who the fuck is the bride?” my brother asked, perplexed.

“Language son” my mom scolded

Shifting his gaze to me, my father said, “you are.”
