Five years later, Hera lives a quiet, nomadic life with her daughter Mila, a bright, spirited child battling diabetes. Constantly on the move to evade Mateo’s relentless pursuit, Hera works as a waitress in a sleepy town, keeping her past hidden and her daughter safe. She’s a survivor, hardened by military training and sharpened by heartbreak. Mateo Delacruz is as ruthless as he is determined. Now, with two Delacruz women to protect, Mateo will stop at nothing to reclaim his family. But the mafia doesn’t forgive easily. View MoreI grabbed Mila's gloved hand before leaving the diner I worked in. It had become dark outside, and the streets were quiet, cold, and covered in snow. The streetlights were dim and weary as they fought hard against the cold.
"Mommy, I'm cold," Mila whined and I worriedly looked around me as we walked over to my car. "I know, baby. We're almost at the car." I cooed at her as we quietly continued our walk down the sidewalk. I wouldn't usually have Mila out in the cold this late but I can't trust her with a nanny or a daycare. Now she spends her afternoons with me at the diner. Mila suddenly stopped in her tracks before bending down to pick something up. "My bracelet!" She yelled out in panic so I bent down to help her look for it. "Did it fall over here?" I asked her in a gentle tone and she nodded at me in response. "There!" She excitedly yelled out before running over to her bracelet lying in the snow. "Mila watch out for the cars!" I yelled out before running after her. Luckily there were no cars on the road. She grabbed the bracelet before she came running back to me. "Mommy, who's that?" She asked while staring at the space behind me. I spun around, my eyes wide with fear, and found a tall shadowy figure standing in the middle of the road staring at us. He didn't move, he was just standing there like a statue. I grabbed Mila's hand before running over to my car in fear. There's a strong possibility that this man is working for Mateo. I unlocked the car doors before helping Mila into the backseat. I buckled her seatbelt and ran over to my side of the car. I opened my door before looking over to the man from earlier and found him walking over to us at a steady pace. I jumped into my car before locking all the doors and putting the key into the ignition. "Mila, put your headphones on and close your eyes," I told her in panic, and she calmly grabbed her iPad and headphones from her backpack. She followed my instructions while I struggled to start the car. Sudden continuous banging against my car window shook me to my core. I looked up and found a masked man harshly banging against my car window. I finally managed to start the car and sped out of the small parking lot behind the diner. I drove home as fast as I could in the snow. The roads were dangerous during this time of the year, but so were Mateo and his men. After a few more minutes of driving, we reached our house. I parked my car in the garage before switching the engine off. I jumped out of the car before getting Mila from the backseat. She sleepily rested her head on my shoulder. I carried her into the house before closing the door behind us. "Mommy, I'm hungry," Mila mumbled against my shoulder, so I gently placed her on the ground. "What do you want to eat?" I asked her and she lightly tapped her chin. "Pizza!" She excitedly yelled and I tried my best to keep a smile on my face. "I don't think there's any tomato sauce left," I told her and she dramatically dropped her shoulders. "We ate pizza twice this week, remember?" I reminded her and she tilted her head to the side. "Enchiladas Mami!" She uttered in the same tone of excitement. "Enchiladas!" I clapped my hands at her before placing a kiss on her cheek. I have some left in the freezer so I'll just warm them up for us. "We definitely enchiladas," I uttered while taking them out of the freezer. I placed the container inside the microwave before turning around to face Mila. "You should get another job, Mommy." Mila softly told me while looking at me as if she felt sorry for me. "And what's wrong with this job?" I smiled down at her and she shrugged at me. "We never have money and you never do fun stuff with me. We're always at the house." She uttered in frustration. "We do fun stuff together. Like when I take you to the park on the weekends or when we watch the Grinch together, or when you help me bake cookies." I told her and she let out a soft sigh. "But we haven't baked cookies in a long time." She whined. "Mila, Mommy has a lot of things to take care of at the moment. Your insulin is really expensive, and then there's the mortgage on the house and a bunch of other grown-up stuff that you don't have to worry about. But it won't always be like this. I promise you, this is temporary, my love." I said before placing a kiss on her forehead but she just sadly stared at the ground. "Fine, I'll get a new job," I uttered in defeat. I don't know where I'm going to find a better job than at the diner, but Mila's right, we're barely getting by on my current paycheck. The microwave finally stopped, so I took the container out before placing it on the countertop. Mila opened the lid before she helped herself to an enchilada and I just quietly watched her as she ate. Mila is the only reason why I'm still alive. If it weren't for her, I would've let him kill me. I wouldn't have run all those years ago. But when I found out that I was pregnant with her, I had no other choice but to run from him. And there was a rumor- that Mateo killed my father. So, I took all his money and all the guns from his safe before fleeing. If Mateo ever finds us, if he ever finds out about Mila- I don't even want to imagine what he'll do to me. I've been hiding from him for six years now and I've been living here in Hollowfalls for a year now because I know that this is the last place he'll come looking for me. A sudden knock on the door snapped me out of my thoughts. I went over to the front door before peeping through the hole, and my breath got stuck in my throat. I placed my hand on my mouth to stop myself from gasping when I saw Mateo’s righthand man standing on my doorstep. This means that-- Mateo knows where we are. After dinner I stood on wobbly legs. I hastily made my way out of the restaurant and Mateo followed me outside."Be a good girl and drive home as fast as you can." Mateo told me before hitting my ass. I bit into my bottom lip and watched him confidently walking back to his car. I grabbed my keys from the valet before climbing into my car. I drove ahead of him and made my way home deciding that I was tired of being so deliciously tortured by him. That I needed him inside of me.Once I parked my car in it's usual spot in the mansion parking lot I jumped out of the vehicle. Mateo had his car parked next to mine, he placed a passionate kiss on my lips once I reached him. We made our way into the house, I ran upstairs and Mateo hit my ass while following me to our room. I opened the door and froze in my spot when I found Mila asleep in our bed."Cold shower." I told Mateo and he nodded at me. "Definitely." He uttered and we sneaked into the room and grabbed our bath essentials. We took
WARNING: SEXUAL CONTENT!I stepped out of the elevator and made my way to Mateo's office. Every employee I passed kindly greeted me. I took my sunglasses off and placed them into my bag. I reached to knock on the door but it swung open before I could do so. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Cara walking out of Mateo's office, she fixed her lipgloss then her hair before smirking at me. I rolled my eyes at her and made my way into Mateo's office. I slammed the door in her face before going over to Mateo."Mateo, what the hell was that woman doing in your office?" I angrily asked him. "She came to hand in her resignation." Her calmly stated. "I already fired her, Mateo! Did you let her work here after I fired her as Mila's babysitter?" I wildly asked him and his eyes slowly ran over me as if he just noticed that I was wearing his favorite color. "I did." He blankly uttered so I walked over to where he was sitting. I angrily glared down at him before pointing my index finger at him.
I walked into the Salvador mansion with Mila by my side. I could already feel the shift that was about to happen. Mila ran upstairs to go put her backpack in her room so I decided to wait for her inside the living room and found Lola sitting on a couch, she put her phone aside and placed all her focus on me."Hera? Where have you been?" Lola curiously asked me as soon as I entered the living room. "I was in town- doing some shopping-- but I couldn't find anything I liked so I decided to come back home." I lied to her through my teeth and Lola just nodded at me. "And have you calmed down yet, since this morning?" She asked me. "Yes, Lola. I'm not leaving my husband, if that's what you're asking." I uttered in annoyance and she smiled at me. "That's good," she told me and a document lying on the table caught my eye. I narrowed my eyes to read what it said and found that it was the results of a paternity test. "The results came back positive." She told me and I faked shock. "Wow wh
I sat in a dark basement, scared of what might happen next. The door suddenly opened and I sat upright before backing into the wall behind me."Hera, follow me," I heard a familiar voice. I slapped myself as I got up from the ground. I followed the person outside since I couldn't get a good look at them in the dark. Once we got outside an old man stood in front of me, his back facing me. His hair was grey and his hands were behind back. He was wearing a black ring on his ring finger with the crest of the Salvador mafia carved into it. But how?"Leonardo?" I uttered in disbelief. "Yes, child." He uttered before turning around to face me and my mouth went agape. He seemed much older now, he had wrinkles around his eyes, they were still as blue as ever.I took his face into my hands to check if he was real and he was- real. Alive. I wordlessly watched him and he showed no emotions on his face. "Yes. I'm alive, Hera." He assured me before opening his arms for me. I skeptically watched
The next morning everyone sat at the breakfast table, quiet and unmoving. Not even Mila had something to say and she's usually the most talkative person in the mornings.Mateo looked around the table before frowning at me so I shrugged at him in response. Uncle Charlie and Aunt Maya just quietly ate their breakfast and kept to themselves."Did something happen that I should know about?" Mateo asked and Lola frowned over at him. "Is something wrong, son?" Martín asked Mateo. "I'm not your son, Martín." Mateo tiredly told him and my eyes slightly widened at his words. "Lola wants me to fix things between you and Dario." I blurted the words out and Lola angrily glared over at me. "Because you're the one who screwed them up in the first place." She angrily told me. "How? By telling my husband that his brother was doing dealings with his enemies behind his back?" I asked Lola and she set her fork down on the table, trying her best not to lose her temper. "And then he tried to kill me
I pulled the black beanie I was wearing over my ears and quietly walked through the gates of the Salvador mansion. I was escorted by a guard, we sneaked around the back of the house and I entered the house through the backdoor.Lola frowned at me when she saw me. "Hera, where the hell have you been? One of the kids just called asking if we were expecting guests." She told me. "Who exactly called you?" I curiously wanted to know. "Carlos, he stands guard at the gate.""Have you informed Mateo about this, yet? I didn't get the chance to." I asked and followed her into the living room. "Yes, he says he's not far from the house, that he'll be here in five minutes." Lola answered before sitting down on a sofa. "You're sitting down?" I asked her in disbelief and she frowned at me. "I'm not doing anything until my son gets here. I'll wait for his orders." She blankly stated. "You do realize who's standing in front of your house right now, don't you?" I asked her and she nodded at me.
