Chapter 1

At my graduation ceremony, I finally gathered the courage to confess my feelings to my longtime crush, Kurt Wilder.

Across the street, Kurt stood in his sleek black gown, posing for photos with the effortless poise that always made him seem untouchable. My heart raced. Unable to contain my excitement, I dashed toward him—completely oblivious to the red light at the crosswalk.

There was a deafening bang. All I felt was pain, then darkness swallowed me awhole.

When I opened my eyes again, the first thing I saw was a stark white ceiling. I was in a hospital bed. And standing beside me—was Kurt.

He looked as impossibly handsome as ever. Maybe this was the closest we'd ever been in our years of one-sided admiration. His gaze shifted from the IV drip above me to my face.

Then, by chance, my eyes caught the glint of a ring on his left hand. On his ring finger.

The realization struck me like another blow. After all this time, had he already belonged to someone else?

I swallowed my disappointment, forcing a smile. "Kurt… why are you here?"

I tried to sit up, only to notice thick layers of gauze wrapped around my arm. Before I could process it, Kurt pulled a chair close and sat down.

"Emma, you've gotten so creative. To force a divorce, you'd even risk your life."

I stared at him, completely bewildered.

Divorce? What on earth was he talking about? I wasn't even married yet—how could divorce have anything to do with me?

Just then, a nurse entered with a tray of medical supplies.

"Dr. Wilder, you're still here? Young lady, you have no idea how lucky you are. You were hit by a car, but fortunately, Dr. Wilder happened to be passing by and gave you emergency treatment right away. Otherwise, you'd be dealing with far more than just a fractured arm."

The nurse bent over my arm, disinfecting the wound with practiced care. She placed my hand gently to the side, and that's when I noticed something that made my breath hitch.

On my own left hand—on my ring finger—was a ring.

And it matched Kurt's. A couple's set.

Panic and disbelief surged through me. After the nurse left, I grabbed hold of Kurt's sleeve in desperation.

"You're Kurt Wilder, right? Class of 2018, Roswell School of Medicine?"

He frowned, clearly displeased, and jerked his sleeve free. His expression was icy.

"Since you're awake, let's discuss our divorce."

My mind went blank.

'This is insane,' I thought.

Moments ago, I'd simply been on my way to my graduation ceremony, hit by a car out of sheer bad luck. How had I suddenly become a woman so desperate to divorce Kurt that I'd supposedly staged an accident?

I was certain—either I'd gone mad, or he had.

"Kurt, wait—"

Before I could finish, a small child suddenly appeared in the room, scampering straight into Kurt's arms with unguarded affection.

I froze. 'What the—?'

He was adorable. My heart softened instantly, and I reached out with my uninjured hand to pinch his chubby cheek. But the little one shrank back, burying himself against Kurt as though frightened.

"Sorry, sweetheart," I cooed quickly, "you're just so cute, I couldn't resist."

Kurt's eyes darkened in annoyance, but I pushed forward, realizing I still hadn't clarified anything.

"Kurt, this may sound unbelievable, but I don't remember any of this. The only thing I recall is heading to my graduation ceremony before the accident—"

He cut me off, impatience dripping from his tone. "So what you're trying to say is… you've lost your memory?"

Amnesia. Yes—that was the only explanation. Only memory loss could explain why I remembered nothing of this supposed marriage.

I nodded fervently, sincerely.

But Kurt remained cold. He pulled a document from his bag and tossed it onto my lap.

"This is the divorce agreement. Every clause is exactly as you requested. If you have no objections, sign it."

I opened my mouth, but words failed me. Before I could react, the little boy in Kurt's arms pouted, lips trembling with grievance at his father's harsh tone.

"Kurt, saying things like that in front of the kid isn't good for his emotional well-being," I said softly. "Why don't we… set this matter aside for now?"

Kurt's laugh was sharp, humorless.

"The kid? Emma, this performance of yours is quite convincing. But don't forget—he's our kid."

My mind spun. His words hit me like a thunderclap.

"And when you were having dinner with another man, did it occur to you to consider your kid's emotional well-being then?"

I could hardly absorb his first revelation before the second one shattered me all over again. Our kid?

I stared at the boy, wide-eyed, as though seeing him for the first time.

I was married, with a son...? I had an entire life I had no memory of!

But the little one ignored me completely, pressing his face into Kurt's neck, unwilling even to look at me.

The information overload was too much. My mind froze, my thoughts crashed. For the first time in my life, I truly felt like my brain had short-circuited.

"No, no, no… Kurt, Honey, listen to me. I swear I don't know him. He must be crazy. There's something wrong in his head. He's probably the type who freezes up whenever he sees a pretty woman.""Dasein Film Academy, Class of 2019, Acting Division Three. You're Peter Mason's student, aren't you?"The young chap's tears dried up instantly.I watched on, speechless."H-How did you know?" the young chap asked."Peter is a close friend of mine. Considering your little stunt outside of school, I think it's about time I had a serious talk with him—about you."The young chap snapped to attention, spine stiff as a board, then bent ninety degrees in a deep bow."I'll take my leave, Sir. Goodbye!"In a blink, he bolted faster than a rabbit!Since Kurt knew exactly who he was, did that mean… he also knew I hadn't cheated?"So you already knew this was all just a misunderstanding?""Otherwise, did you really think I'm that easy to fool? Now that this matter's settled, what I do want to ta

Gradually, Kurt and I began to feel more and more like a real married couple. The chunk of my past that was missing seemed not as important as I'd thought. What mattered was that I was happy now.But the closer we grew, the more unsettled I became. I kept worrying that everything I had now would vanish the moment my memory returned. People really are contradictory creatures.True enough, another contradiction arrived in my life sooner than I expected. One day, Kurt and I went shopping to buy Max a birthday present. He went to park the car while I waited at the curb. Not far off, a young man called out to me."Emma!"He looked like a lively student—just a little taller than me—and his smile was pleasant enough. Maybe after getting used to Kurt's jaw-dropping looks, other faces barely registered anymore. The odd thing was I didn't know him, yet he acted like we were old friends."Emma, have you been busy lately? I called you a few times; it kept going to call waiting. What have you

"I was waiting to eat with you," I said.Kurt ruffled my hair, then said nothing more. He simply gave me a small smile and handed me a packet of disinfectant wipes."Sanitize first. Let's eat."Just as I finished setting the lunch boxes on the desk, the office door swung open again."The food smells amazing. You don't mind if I join uninvited, do you?"It was Pamela.Instinctively, I stood up. "Hello, Pamela."She acted as if I were nothing but air. With brazen confidence, she ignored me entirely and seated herself right beside Kurt."There's so much good food, and you didn't even think to call me?"I froze awkwardly at the side, not sure where to place myself."Out."Kurt's tone was flat, yet his words landed like a resounding slap across Pamela's face. She turned sharply toward him, stunned. But Kurt didn't even bother to meet her gaze."Has no one ever taught you the most basic courtesy when entering a room?" he said nonchalantly. Her beautiful mask cracked in an inst

My breath caught, and my entire body froze—like a shrimp thrown into boiling water.Only when Kurt's breathing steadied did I dare lift my gaze.Asleep, Kurt looked nothing like the cold, distant man I knew. Instead, he seemed gentle and princely—so striking it was impossible to look away."Can't sleep?" His low voice startled me. "Or are you hoping to do something else?"I snapped my eyes shut and burrowed back into his arms. "I'm already asleep!"Sleepiness finally crept in, and with his heartbeat steady against my ear, my consciousness drifted into slumber.Strange… in this moment, we didn't look like a couple about to divorce at all.…From that day forward, something between us began to shift.Kurt never mentioned divorce again, as if the agreement had been nothing more than a rash mistake. In fact, he started acting almost… clingy. At seven in the morning, he dragged me out of bed, insisting I make him breakfast."You promised you'd prepare me homemade breakfasts with

On the way back, we took Kurt's car.Max had his own special child seat.I hesitated for a long while. Thinking of what had just happened in the office, I decided to sit in the back.My hand had just touched the door handle when Kurt's voice drifted lazily from the front."Do I look like your driver?"I froze, then quietly released the handle and fumbled for an excuse."No, I just… wanted to see the view from the backseat."He glanced at me, giving me the kind of look reserved for fools. The car hadn't gone far before Max fell asleep. Silence stretched between Kurt and me, thick and awkward, filling the entire car.I couldn't hold back my curiosity any longer. "Kurt… why did you marry me?"He kept his eyes on the road, his tone so calm it sounded as casual as deciding what to eat for dinner."What's the point of asking that now?"He was right. What meaning did it hold anymore? We were already on the brink of divorce. When we arrived home, Kurt went straight into his study.

So, Kurt and Pamela were colleagues now?Kurt's voice cut through the air. "You lack sleep. Just get more rest."Pamela gave a soft, humorless laugh. "Rest? For doctors like us, rest isn't something we get to schedule at will. It's the end of the year—workload's heavy, staff's short. Even if I had twenty-four hours, it still wouldn't be enough."When Kurt didn't respond, her smile faltered. She cleared her throat, then shifted the conversation."By the way, I heard you and Emma are getting divorced. What's going on with you two?"Of course. Gossip. She might have framed it as concern, but her tone carried a flicker of glee, as if she were savoring the spectacle. What a conniving little act.Kurt lifted his brows and glanced at her. "Funny. Since when were you the type to care about gossip?""Come on, Kurt. Your sudden marriage announcement surprised everyone. None of us even knew someone like Emma existed in your life."Her hand, resting on her knee, clenched so tightly her n
