Before the marking ceremony began, I had just finished changing into my newly tailored dress when Leah came to find me.

Her face was full of resentment, and the look of jealousy and hatred were obvious in her eyes. "Lana, tell me why? Why were you born as the Alpha's daughter, while I'm stuck as an Omega? Even Simon has to bow to your father's pressure and mark you today."

I snorted. "Leah, Obsidian Pack has already shown you more kindness than you deserve. My dad made an exception to take you in and to give you shelter. And what have you done? Instead of being grateful, you've spent all your time bullying me.

"As for Simon, if he really loved you, he would've abandoned everything and run away with you a long time ago. Instead, he's clinging to the position of future Alpha."

My words struck straight at the core of what werewolves valued most, loyalty and capability. Leah staggered back a few steps.

"No, that's not true. Simon said once he inherits the pack, he'll break the mate bond with you and officially mark me."

I snorted again. "Do you really think my dad has ruled this pack for years without seeing something like that coming?"

Leah's expression suddenly darkened. Her gaze turned harsh. "In that case, don't blame me for what happens next."

While speaking, she pulled out a silver dagger from behind her waist. She clenched her jaws, and her face went pale as she drove it into her own arm.

She then let out a shrill scream.

The werewolves outside ran in. All they saw was Leah collapsing weakly and crying in grievance.

"Lana, why would you do this to me with a silver blade?"

Simon smelled the blood and ran in with bloodshot eyes.

The moment he saw us, he lost control. He slapped me hard across the face.

Blood spilled from my mouth. I felt a stinging sensation on my cheek.

The next second, the Beta stormed in and knocked him to the ground with a single blow. "How dare you lay a hand on Lana?"

Simon clenched his fists and reluctantly lowered his head. "I'm sorry, Lana. I acted on impulse."

I ignored him and turned away.

The ceremony was about to begin. I didn't have time to argue with him.

The ritual grounds were packed with werewolves.

My dad led me up to the altar. His voice carried the absolute authority of an Alpha.

"Today, under the witness of the Moon Goddess and guided by Her will, my daughter will choose her mate.

"The mate she has chosen is–"

"Wait!"

Simon stepped forward and cut him off.

My dad's eyes burned with rage.

But Simon showed no fear. There was even a trace of desperation in his voice.

"Alpha, my wolf rejects Lana's scent. Even if you kill me today, I will never mark this vile shewolf!"

The crowd erupted into shocked murmurs.

My dad snorted.

"Who do you think you are? My daughter's choice of mate was never you–"

He paused. His gaze eventually landed on a silent figure in the corner.
