Chapter 1

Author: Green Pick
Everyone was toasting each other in the hall when I saw Grayson Chapman hold Monica Bleuthe's hand and take a drink on her behalf. He had told me more than once that his stomach couldn’t handle alcohol. He had never drunk on my behalf in the four years we had been together, not even when I got dead drunk while entertaining clients.

Just as I was about to ask him about it, Grayson threw me a warning glance. "This is just a misunderstanding. I'm only pretending to be Monica's boyfriend. It's no big deal that I'm having a drink." He lowered his voice when explaining it to me.

My knuckles turned white from gripping my wine glass so hard.

Monica was unhappy to see Grayson whispering to me. "Ella, do you know each other?"

A gentle smile appeared on Grayson's face. "There's nothing between us. She's just a subordinate of mine."

Everyone in my family knew that I was gaining work experience at another company, and that included Monica, which was why she said nothing.

Grayson came to Monica's side and looked at me questioningly when he saw me in haute couture. "Do you know each other?"

Monica acted like we were close. "We're cousins, and we have a close relationship."

Close relationship? Monica had always loved comparing herself with me and wanted everything I had. She even tried to get my parents to take her in as their daughter so that she could inherit the fortune that was supposed to be mine. I did not expose her and only sneered quietly.

Grayson looked relieved to hear those words. Even though we were from the same family, there was still a big gap between our families' circumstances. He probably thought that I could come to the party because of Monica, when, in fact, my father was the head of the Bleuthes.

Monica leaned on Grayson's shoulder coquettishly when she saw me staring at Grayson. "Why are you staring at my boyfriend that way, Ella? Do you have a crush on him?"

I almost laughed out loud with anger. "Don't worry. A man like him isn't worth a second glance from me."

Monica got mad when she heard my retort. She was about to say something when Grayson suddenly stepped forward to grab my wrist. "What do you mean by that?"

I slowly took a sip of my drink. "It means exactly what it sounds like, Mr. Grayson. Please have some dignity. You're hurting my wrist."

That was when Grayson realized he had lost his cool in public with so many people watching. He quickly released me.

Monica's mother, who was my aunt, looked unhappy as well. "Why do you need to say things like that, Ella?"

My uncle berated me, "You can't say that about Grayson even if you're jealous of Monica. You should apologize to him!"

I ignored them. They could not do anything to me anyway. After all, they were aware of my real identity.

Monica glared at me and suddenly changed the topic, "Didn't you say you have a boyfriend of four years, Ella? Why didn't you bring him with you? Is it because he's too embarrassing to show in public for being penniless?

"Well, that explains things. That's probably the reason why you keep staring at my boyfriend. You must really want someone like him."

I looked at Grayson. He knew the reason very well. After all, he was the one who told me to keep our relationship a secret. He always refused to take me to meet his family, even going as far as to reject me when I asked him to marry me.

He met my eyes, but did not say anything to stand up for me. Instead, he held up Monica's hand out of spite and announced out loud, "I, Grayson, am Monica's boyfriend, and she's the only woman I'll ever love in this life!"

Everyone turned to look at him when he made the announcement, and they applauded. I bit the corner of my lip as my face turned pale. This was how I was treated for sacrificing so much in four years of our relationship. My boyfriend refused to go public with me, and was even pretending to be a couple with another woman.

"Look at how loving they are, Ella. You shouldn't think about snatching her boyfriend."

"It doesn't matter if your boyfriend is dirt-poor. You should bring him home to meet the family. No one would mind!"

Just as I was about to explain, Monica acted like she suddenly realized something. "Oh, I almost forgot how you always loved having fun. You probably have lots of lovers and must be wondering which one of them to take home."

Everyone started sniggering when she said that.

My aunt looked at me with disdain, "Ella, you should take good care of yourself even if you enjoy going around town like that. It'd be horrible if you contracted some disgusting disease at such a young age."

My uncle started to lecture me sternly as well, "Don't you know that our family would want you to find someone of an equal social status, Ella? How would your parents feel if you end up pregnant with a bastard child?"

They were slandering me in front of so many other influential families and high-ranking individuals. This was no different than insulting me in public. I gripped hard on the stem of my wine glass and looked at Grayson, who was silent throughout.

"Why aren't you saying anything, Grayson? Aren't you the one who knows best what I'm usually like? Why don't you tell them if I'm someone who enjoys fooling around or if my boyfriend is a penniless man?"

When my parents found out about what happened, they were enraged and went straight to my aunt's house to demand an explanation. They made an announcement to freeze all shares my aunt's family had of the company and kicked them out of the family. My aunt and uncle blamed everything on Monica to protect themselves. They even tried to beg for mercy by cutting all ties with her, but it was too late—especially when my parents found out that they tried to throw me into the sea that day. They should count themselves lucky that they were not taken to court for this. After Edwin settled his family's affairs upon his return, he started to launch a commercial attack on Grayson's company. Grayson's company had strived because of my help. Without a core employee like me in the company, it took only half a month for his financial chain to break. He lost his clients, and his company's shares dropped drastically. He had no choice but to file for bankruptcy.Monica was having an even harder time.

"It was wrong of me, Ella. I made a huge mistake. I was always true to you in the past four years, but I was too materialistic. I shouldn't have looked down on you because I thought you were just an ordinary woman. Let's get married, alright?"I looked down at him coldly. "It's too late, Grayson. I'm already married to Edwin.""You're lying!" Grayson said through clenched teeth. "Even if you did grow up with him, you lost contact for four years, and he only just returned from overseas. How could your relationship develop so fast?""But it's the truth. If you don't believe me, you can look into this yourself.""You're supposed to be with me! If you were already married to him, then you cheated on me!"I sighed. "Have you forgotten that I broke up with you earlier today, Grayson? While you and Monica were busy having your fling in bed, Edwin and I went to the city hall. How can you say I cheated?"Edwin did not look surprised when I suggested registering for marriage. He quickly fi

My conversation with Monica was clearly captured on the screen, and the scene of her leaning backward and falling into the water was crystal clear."She jumped in herself!""That's horrible! She risked her life just to frame Ella!"After my aunt watched the footage, she turned to look at Monica crying hysterically and then at everyone staring at them with disdain. She could not take the accusing looks and almost passed out from the stress of it all. My uncle quickly grabbed her with an extremely upset look on his face. He roared at Monica. "Look at what you did! How could you do something like that?"Monica turned pale as she tried to explain, "Mom, Dad, it wasn't on purpose. I just like Grayson so much that I wanted to keep him by my side…"Grayson stared at the footage and ignored the crowd behind him that was discussing this with great interest as he came straight to my side. "I made a mistake, Ella. Please give me another chance. I'll make sure to break it clean with Monica.

Grayson's declaration caused a huge commotion among the crowd. "What?" My aunt was the first to scream as she grabbed him by the collar. "What nonsense is this, Grayson? You're supposed to be my daughter's boyfriend!"Grayson's eyes turned red as his chest heaved violently. He smacked my aunt's hands away and pointed at me while roaring, "I was just pretending to be Monica's boyfriend. The person I've been in a relationship with for the past four years is Ella!"If she hadn't kept her identity a secret and told me she was just an ordinary woman, we would've gotten married long ago!"Monica's face turned pale, and she tugged hard at Grayson's sleeve to beg, "Stop it, Grayson. Stop all of this, I'm begging you! We're supposed to be a couple. You promised me—""That's enough!" Grayson pushed her away forcefully. "If I had known this, I wouldn't have agreed to help you out. Just look at how this turned out. You've destroyed my relationship with Ella. Let's never see each other ever a

Grayson tried to grab me to say something when I saw Edwin walking out to the event hall. I went straight up to him and got into his car in front of Grayson. Grayson was forced to stop following me, but he roared at the car, "If you insist on being unreasonable, don't blame me for taking extreme measures, Ella!"Edwin looked deeply at me through the rearview mirror when I got into the car. "Where do you want to go?"I had no idea where I wanted to go. All I knew was that I wanted to stay away from Grayson, but I was also aware of how unscrupulous Grayson could be. If I wanted to cut all ties with him, I had to use extreme measures too."Let's head to the city hall right now." I blurted without thinking but quickly realized it was not appropriate. "I'm so sorry for making you play along with me, Edwin, but I… Can you help me to the very end with this? Don't worry. We'll get an annulment after some time…"Edwin said nothing. All he did was drive directly toward the city hall. Tha
