“You sent for me ma’am?” Lillian said as she walked into the study room, already having a bad feeling about the meeting and knowing of her great secret with her son, she couldn’t fight the nervous feeling she was having. She stood, fiddling the hem of her apron, her head bent as she studied her black leather sandals which looked old with mere looking at it. Her hair was covering her face, seeming to bury her in her own self.
With one look, one can see she was trembling. The air condition in the room was moderate but she was trembling and definitely not from cold but because of the woman sitting opposite her on a sofa, casually sipping her coffee. Looking at how casual she looked, Lilly doesn’t know if she had found out about her and Shane but she couldn’t control her fear none the less.
Margaret looked as calm and graceful as she could while sipping her coffee, her short blonde hair looking soft by mere look that one will want to touch it. Her transparent gray eyes, just like the ones of the man Lilly loves but only that it doesn’t hold the tenderness he’s holds when they look at her. The few wrinkles on her face doesn’t change how exquisite and beautiful she looks. She was sitting with one leg crossed over the other, dressed in a designer’s top and plain black pants, her shoe’s heels were pointed and looked quite sharp that Lillian fears her heart might be the next place they will pierce. Margaret gently placed her coffee cup on the saucer then place it on the stool beside her. “What are you in my house?” She asked in a voice that sounds gentle but sends chills down Lilly’s back.
“I don’t understand ma’am,” Lillian whispered.
“What are you in my house?” Margaret repeated but with her voice chilling a few degrees.
Lilly trembled, believing then that she must have found out about her and her son, the thought increased her fear and her fingers shook but she still gulped and answered, “A maid ma’am.”
“Good. So you know you are a maid, why do you go after my son?”
At the question, Lilly’s head sprang up, one could see the look of horror on her face, she knew it, she has found out but how? How did she, who told her? But who will tell her, no one knows apart from her and Shane. She opened her mouth to speak but no words came out.
“Lillian, I’m going to say this once and it will be my first and last warning to you. The very day I will see you acting coquettishly near my son, is the day you will take your last breath.”
“But ma’am I...” She tried to protest.
“Let me finish!” Margaret’s voice was law as she clammed up immediately, “I have received complaints about you and God help me Lillian, the day I will see for myself,” she shook her head, “pray, that I show mercy for I won’t.” She looked at her, “do I make myself clear?”
“Yes ma’am,” Lillian nodded, all the while thinking on her words, she had received complaints, which complaints? Who complained? Could it be Diane? But she has never seen me with Shane, or have she?
“Stay away from my son, stay away from Shane. You are a maid and a maid remains a maid. A maid works like a maid, will be paid like a maid and will die as a maid, do you understand?”
No matter how much Lilly rejects her words, she still nodded, “yes ma’am,” her heart was shattering already, this was what she always tell herself, she is a maid, this is not a fairytale where the pauper wins the Prince, but she just can’t get her heart to listen.
“Whatever dreams you have with my son, abolish it. For no son of mine will be together with an imperfect girl. Follow in your family’s footstep. Your mother married my servant, I have many male servants, if you really want to be with a man, I can gift one to you but you will never, not in my house, not in my life, be with my son!” Margaret’s face tightened as she made the last sentence before adding “never.”
Lillian’s eyes welled up but she stifled her sob and nodded, “yes ma’am.”
Margaret stared at her like one will look at an unworthy object in disgust, “get out of my sight,” she shooed her and she curtsied before turning, opening the door and running out of the office. She closed the door after her, her legs grew weak when she was out.
She cupped her hand on her mouth to silence her sobs as the tears came pouring down her cheeks like waterfall. She took a step, then a second one before slumping on the floor, her shoulders shook with her silence sobs and she wondered what kind of life she was born into.
Footsteps sounded on the hallway and she scrambled to her feet immediately, she dabbed at her eyes with the back of her hands, sniffling in the process to clear her nose.
Shane appeared at the end of the hallway, he seemed to just be returning from work as he was still dressed in the black suit and pants he wore to work. One week old stubbles were visible under his jaw and he looked so tired like he had had a stressful day at the office. He froze for a second when he saw Lilly and then was by her side in quick strides. He grabbed her shoulders tenderly, a frown written on his face, “flower, what is it? Why are you crying?” He looked up at the door beside her and understanding dawned on him, “why are you here, what did she say to you?” He whispered.
Lilly sniffed and shook her head softly, she forced a smile his way, “nothing, she just called to ask me a few things” she gulped.
“What did she ask you?”
Lillian took a deep breath and closed her eyes, opening them again, she looked at him, “I’m sorry sir, but if there is nothing else I will do for you, I will like to return to the kitchen.”
Shane was visibly shocked at her words for she has never spoken to him like that before, “Lilly, what do you mean?”
“I’m sorry sir but can I go now?”
“Lilly...” He wanted to say something however the door opened and Margaret stood beside it. He quickly let his hands on Lillian’s shoulders drop on his sides. Margaret looked from him to Lillian, she communicated to her with her eyes which were filled with warnings.
“I’m sorry sir, if there is nothing else, I will leave first,” Lilly looked at her and bowed her head slightly, “ma’am,” then to Shane, she said, “sir,” and walked off immediately, not daring to look back. This is how it was supposed to be after all. This was how she had wanted it to be, do her job, earn her salary then carry on with her dream to go to college and also for her mother’s surgery, but her heart betrayed her, it fell for the one man she can never dream of having in this world, the one man that will never be hers.
“What else has she released now?” Margaret asked.“Actually ma’am, it’s not about you but herself.”“What?”“Here ma’am,” she approached her and showed her the video, Lillian appeared on the broken screen of the tab, in her usual black attire. It was an interview she had taken with a TV host in Georgia. In the interview, she talked about how she was once a maid, her parents being servants to a well known family in New York which she didn’t mention. She also talked about how Robert was her life savior, offering her shelter when she had none, taking care of her, sending her to school and giving her the life of luxury which she never expected to have in her whole life. Not able to watch the video again, Margaret smashed the tablet yet again on the floor and Sheila knew there was no saving it anymore. “How come she is a step ahead?”“I think she already knows we will think about using it against her and released it herself. This is bad ma’am, there is nothing we have against her anymore,”
The next day, the trending news in the internet was Margaret Lockwood and a well known Tycoon business man by the name, Lucian Ramirez. The news about them was the fact that before the contract of building the bridge landed on Lockwood Enterprises and Inc, Margaret was seen coming out of a hotel room with him. Again was that both of them were also seen, checking into a hotel in Spain and also in a small town like Montana.Without further ado, it was understood by people that Margaret Lockwood may have sold her body to win the contract which she had made a nice speech about winning fair and square. The PR of Lockwood Enterprises and Inc tried to take down the news immediately it was released but it was like someone was working in the shadows. No matter the amount they paid the media house, the post can only be gone for one minute at most before it was back on the top of trending news.Comments were flowing in, some people were writing that Margaret is not that kind of a woman and ever
“Yes. I pretended. I pretended to be drunk, why do you think I will do that? Because I was tired, I was tired of missing you, I was tired of wishing you were close when you were. I was tired of being angry, I was tired of acting like we don’t each other, I was tired of every single thing Lillian! I just wanted to hold you close, to let everything be in the past. I weakened myself and I told you my pain, I let you into the things that happened to me when you were gone, how I depended on my hallucinations of you. I let you into my pain. You wanted to explain so many times that night but I didn’t want you to, when you insisted to explain, I pretended to be asleep, because I didn’t want to hear your explanation, I didn’t want to leave in the past anymore, I just wanted us to get over everything,” he heaved a sigh, his gray eyes darker and watery.“I did everything because I was tired. But right after I thought everything was finally good between us, I realized that it wasn’t. I was even l
“Are you talking about your mother?” Margaret smiled, “oh, she was a good maid, she knew her status unlike her daughter who wanted something higher than her. It was a pity she died so soon.”“And it’s going to be a pity that you will die so soon too Margaret, because my motto is: An eye for an eye. Only that I won’t be the one to kill you, let me reveal spoilers for you,” she leaned forward on her desk, like she wanted to tell her something important, “the internet would.”Margaret frowned, “what the hell are you talking about, maid?”“Don’t worry, you will know soon enough, no need being hasty,” Lillian smiled and looked down at the document on the desk, “although, I can sign my shares to you and you won’t even need to spend your money,” seeing the look of confusion on everyone’s face, her smile broadened and she looked straight at Margret with hatred, “you just have to deliver a present to me, your head in the bag.”The two women stared at each other with intensified hatred for each
Climbing down from her car on Monday morning, Lillian sighed, she was happy today, hell, she had been happy since Saturday morning. She couldn’t wait to see him, to see his reaction when he sees her. Although, a part of her told her she should have waited for him to wake up that morning, and Edna had said the same thing, but she didn’t want to overwhelm him when he wakes up to see her in his bed.It would be better should he wake up and let his memories tell him what happened, that way, he could be able to react the way he wants and would be calmed by now that they would be seeing again this morning.“Ma’am, can you look at this now? I will put it on your desk,” Philip was saying as he ran after her to the elevator with some paper works, “Mrs. Lockwood wanted you to be done with it by today and you haven’t even looked at it since Saturday, neither are you doing so now.”Lillian got into the elevator and turned to press her floor button, a smile was playing on her lips and Philip had t
She sighed and asked after a while, “where do you stay now?”“I have a penthouse.”“What’s the address?”He frowned, “I can’t remember,” he shook his head and sighed afterwards, “I have a better idea, why don’t you take me to your home?”“What?” She looked at him, shocked.Shane smiled, “I know, you don’t have a home, you are just my imagination, I tend to forget that sometimes,” he sighed.Lillian said nothing and after some time, she called Philip, “find out Mr. Lockwood’s house address for me.”“Yes ma’am,” he answered and the call ended.***Getting to his building, Lilly had the bellhop help her take him to his penthouse, she put him in the bed and left to close the door after the bellhop. Returning to the living room, she paused when she saw him looking at her, “what?”“You look so real, unlike other times,” he shrugged.“I am real, Shane.”He smiled, “I use to believe that before too. Do you remember the day I went back to Chicago and stayed in the same hotel I stayed with the

Lilly woke up with eye bags in the morning due to lack of sleep, she was tired as well and wants nothing than to lay back down and sleep but Paulina won’t hear of it as she chased her up to carry on with her morning routine. She sluggishly got up from her bed and joined the girls in bathing and pre
When Lilly didn’t hear him say anything again, she knew she has no reason of lingering around anymore but she doesn’t want to go, she hasn’t had her fill of him yet and hoped he would invite her in.As if reading her thought, Shane opened the door wider and said, “come on in, it’s really cold out h
Days turned into weeks as Shane bought the hearts of the board members. But the more he shows how efficient he was, the more work and problems he found on his desk for attendance and solutions. He didn’t mind any way, he tackled the ones he could and the ones he couldn’t, he called for a meeting fo
