Tamara's POV

“Out of my way!”

I turned just in time to see a coursemate brush past me and Elena on roller skates still yelling as he ran through.

Elena shook her head and adjusted her bag strap.

“Raving mad”

I chuckled and brushed back the strands of hair that were getting into my eyes.

“Whose class do we have this morning?”

Elena asked

“Professor Bondo's”

“On minerals and resources?”

“Mineral resources, specifically granite”, I said with a small laugh.

“Elena…

“Let me be Tamara”.

I looked at her black wavy hair and the black eyeliner that made her eyes stand out.

She blinked, looking all gothic and in black.

“What are you doing after class?”

I smiled shyly, tucking my hair behind my ears. “I have plans”.

******************

I crossed the main quadrangle with my earbuds in, head down, walking in the way I'd learned to move through spaces that weren't really mine. People passed. Nobody looked at me twice. That was the point.

To my left, the hockey rink glowed under floodlights. To my right, Ashford Pack kids sprawled across the steps of the student center, loud and easy, they were in their environment.

I walked between them like a ghost who'd forgotten she wasn't visible or invisible — I don't know, anything could work! English is not my strong suit.

It was safer that way, I told myself. I had been telling myself that for years.

"You're doing it again."

I yanked out an earbud. Paul fell into step beside me, tall and warm, that easy smile already curving his mouth.

"Doing what?"

"Watching everyone like you're not also here."

I snorted. "Profound, Wills."

He bumped my shoulder. "I try."

I chuckled.

We walked together for a minute. It was easy with Paul, it had been since freshman year, when he'd sat next to me in Intro to Geology and asked if I'd done the reading.

Nobody did the reading, I'd said. He'd laughed, and something in my chest had loosened.

I'd warmed up to him instantly and he was a good friend as well as a great quarterback player.

I still looked at him and saw a friend. Warm, steady and familiar. Like furniture you forget you love until someone suggests moving it.

Yeah that feeling.

He was watching me now with an expression I didn't know how to name.

"What?"

"Nothing." He looked away too fast. "You heading to the rink?"

Small errand, I thought. A willing errand I wasn't even comfortable telling my friend about.

I knew how he'd react to it.

"Lucas needs his glove back. Left it in the library."

Paul's jaw shifted. Just slightly. "He could pick it up himself."

"He's at practice."

"He's always at practice."

I didn't answer. I couldn't explain why I wanted to be the one to return it. Why I'd held that glove in my bag all afternoon, fingers brushing the worn leather like it meant something.

Paul stopped at the path fork. "I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yeah."

He hesitated. Then he touched my elbow briefly with a big smile and walked toward the dorms.

I went the other way.

The corridor behind the rink was empty and silent. Exactly the kind of place Lucas had been finding me for months.

Sometimes I thought about the privacy and secrecy and most times I preferred it. Lucas was one of the most popular people on campus. Being with him in public took a lot from the both of us.

And like he always said we were not ready for it. I wasn't ready for it.

I guess he was right.

He was already there, leaning against the wall like he'd been waiting. His hair was damp from the shower. His eyes found mine before I said a word.

"You came."

"You left this." I held out the glove.

He didn't take it. He just looked at me with that private expression nobody else got to see except me, the hot steamy one that made me believe the public distance meant nothing.

"Tamara."

He called my name in this low seductive tone of his that always sent fluid rushing to my thighs.

He stepped forward, hands finding my waist, and the glove slipped from my fingers. It didn't matter. Nothing mattered except the way his thumb traced my hipbone through my jeans.

"I've been thinking about you all day," he said against my ear.

Don't, I thought. Don't believe it.

I don't know why I was suddenly fighting it, I shook my head and melted into him.

I believed it.

He kissed me softly then deeper, until I couldn't remember why I'd ever told myself to be careful. The corridor faded away. The world faded away. There was only Lucas and the way he made me feel chosen.

His hands found their way into my hair, down my face, to my breasts and then have it a gentle squeeze.

A moan escaped my lips.

“Just as you like it”, he said against my lips with a chuckle.

"I have to go," I whispered my entire body melting like gooey chocolate.

"Soon."

He kissed me again his fingers crawling under my skirt. I let him.

*********

I walked home feeling warm and like I was floating. The kind of stupid-happy that made me almost laugh at myself.

I cut through the side path behind the athletics building, it was a shorter route, I took it all the time.

That's when I heard his voice.

He was laughing, low and easy. This private version of him I always saw; unguarded, comfortable, real.

I rounded the corner.

I stopped breathing.

Lucas. His hands were tangled in blonde hair. His mouth on someone else's mouth.

Kissing her like this wasn't his first time or even new to him.

I stood there, my legs shaking slightly and my head spinning with both shock and confusion.

She pulled back just enough to smile.

It was Mara Rivers, sharp and beautiful, the girl who smiled at him and waved at every game.

Mara Rivers, the sassy cocky bitch.

He kissed her again like he'd done it a thousand times.

I stood there in the dark, and something inside me cracked clean in two.

This, I realized. This is also private.

I just wasn't supposed to see it.

A sob escaped my lips and they turned immediately, startled.

  • In love with my Ex’s Rival:The Ice Hockey Rival   Broken Ice

Tamara’s POVHockey practice on Monday was like watching a car crash happen in slow motion.I didn’t mean to go. I told myself I was just walking to the rink to grab a textbook Elena had left there after the game. That was the lie I told myself, and I almost believed it until I found myself standing in the bleachers with my backpack slung over one shoulder, watching them warm up.The moment Garrett saw me, his whole body shifted. Not obviously. Just a tightening of his shoulders, a sharpness that came into his movements like someone had flipped a switch. He skated past the glass and looked directly at me, that small nod that said I see you, and I’m thinking about you.It made my stomach flip. Then Lucas noticed where Garrett was looking.I watched his jaw clench. Watched him deliberately skate toward the boards, toward Garrett, like he was checking his territory. They collided…..hard enough that the other players stopped and stared.

  • In love with my Ex’s Rival:The Ice Hockey Rival   Claiming

Tamara’s POVI didn’t sleep that night.Elena had made me tell her everything……Lucas, the corridor, the courtyard, Garrett’s room, all of it. She’d listened without interrupting, her dark eyes narrowing with each detail, and when I finished, she’d done what Elena always did. She’d pulled me into a hug and said, “You’re an idiot. But you’re my idiot.”Then she’d made me promise not to disappear again, not without telling her, and had fallen asleep on my bed while I stared at the ceiling and watched my life implode in real time.By morning, the screenshots had spread to every pack group chat on campus. I could feel it in the way people looked at me in the dining hall. Whispers that stopped when I walked past. Phones lowered. Eyes that used to slide right past me now tracked my every movement.I was visible now. Just not in the way I’d wanted.Elena had left early for her geology lab, kissing the top of my head and squeezing my shoulder like she was reminding me I still existed. I’d nodd

  • In love with my Ex’s Rival:The Ice Hockey Rival   He looked at her first

Tamara's POV"I am not spending my Friday night watching sweaty men chase a rubber disc."Elena had been saying some version of this for forty-five minutes. We were already in the arena. The cold had seeped through my jeans. The noise was building, that low, rising anticipation that happens right before a game, when everyone's holding their breath without realizing it."You said that," I replied, pulling my hoodie tighter. "Twelve times.""Because you aren't listening.""I'm listening. I just don't care."She glared at me, all dark lips and sharp eyeliner. Her black hair was pulled into two pigtails that somehow made her look more threatening, not less. "You owe me. I covered for you with Professor Bondo when you missed that quiz.""You forged a doctor's note.""A convincing doctor's note." She grabbed my arm and dragged me toward our seats in the mid-section. "Now sit. Cheer. Pretend you understand what offside means."I laughed. It came out before I could stop it, genuine and unexpe

  • In love with my Ex’s Rival:The Ice Hockey Rival   Garrett

Tamara's POVI came back to myself in pieces.First, the ceiling. Grey morning light filtering through blinds I didn't recognize. Then the ache between my thighs, deep and insistent, I couldn't see but felt with every shift of my legs. My head pounded. My mouth was dry. Then the memories arrived like a flood of cold water.Climbing into his lap. Kissing him. Saying Lucas's name. Him going still. And then….My face burned. I sat up too fast, and my head punished me for it. The blanket slid down, and I was naked underneath. His shirt had been draped over me at some point. I hadn't noticed it last night.Garrett. I knew his name now. I'd screamed it.I looked around the room. The floor blanket was gone. The bed was made—he'd made the bed while I was still in it. The windows were cracked open, letting in the cold morning air. And there, leaning against the doorframe like he'd been standing there for a while, was him.He was wearing a T-shirt and short, barefoot. Arms crossed over his broa

  • In love with my Ex’s Rival:The Ice Hockey Rival   The wrong name

Tamara's POVIt wasn't a question. And somehow my dizzy brain couldn't file that as danger, something to be wary of.I shook my head, my voice sounding rather scratchy. "Ashford."Something flickered across his face. Annoyance, maybe. Or amusement. Hard to tell with the lighting and the alcohol in my system."I don't care," I added, because suddenly I was defensive. "I'm not on anyone's territory. I'm just sitting."He didn't respond to that. Just stood there, massive and unmoving, his eyes scanning my face like he was reading a report he didn't particularly enjoy."You can't stay out here alone," he said finally."Watch me.""You're drunk.""Observant."Something that might have been a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. It was gone before I could be sure.He didn't ask what was wrong, didn't try to fix it. He didn't offer me a tissue or a hug or any of the things people usually shove at crying girls. He just said, "Get up.""Why?""Because I'm not carrying you."I stared at him

  • In love with my Ex’s Rival:The Ice Hockey Rival   Never Together

Tamara's POVThe sob escaped before I could stop it.Lucas's head snapped up first. His hands were still in Mara's hair, frozen mid-caress. His eyes found mine across the darkness, and I watched something move through his face, something fast and calculating. Not guilt. It was never guilt.Mara turned slower than he did. Took her time, like she already knew who was standing there. When she saw me, her lips curved into a small, satisfied smile. The kind that said she'd been waiting for this. She knew, I realized. She always knew.I turned and walked away as fast as I could. I didn't run, no I refused to run. My legs shook, my chest burned, my eyes pouring out tears but I kept my spine straight and my steps even. The gravel crunched under my sneakers. Behind me, I heard murmured voices, then footsteps like someone was sprinting after me."Tamara."He called my name using that voice of his, the one that used to make me feel special.I kept walking. He caught up before I reached the main
