Chapter 2

Author: Ashfall
"I'll give you some time. Mr. and Mrs. Cox will personally come to pick you up in three days."

Yvette left, but she kept a photocopy of the billion-dollar property transfer agreement behind.

Who wouldn't want to inherit that much money?

Still, you had to live long enough to enjoy it.

The four of us, who usually spent our days tripping each other up, fell silent. In the end, we sat down together, as if by unspoken agreement, ready to talk things through properly.

They had all seen the birthmark on my lower back. Laurel had even dug the heiress's heirloom necklace out of my suitcase before.

On top of that, there was my face.

Who the heiress was really wasn't up for debate.

That was why they couldn't understand.

"So even after the DNA test confirmed you were related to the Coxes, they still killed you?" Rebecca said.

I snapped back irritably, "Did you forget? You couldn't even tell what was left of me when you went to collect my body! So what are you still unsure about?"

Laurel let out a long sigh. "I remember. You were basically mush. I had nightmares for days after that."

Vita frowned. "We're not doubting whether you were killed. We're just not sure how you still got labeled a fraud when you're the real heiress."

Who the hell knew?

The four of us put our heads together and still couldn't come up with a reasonable explanation.

Laurel started sniffling.

"What do we do now? The only ones whose ages match are the four of us. There aren't any other candidates. With that psycho family, I honestly think if no one reconnects with them in three days, they might just kill all of us."

Obviously, none of us wanted to die.

After thinking hard, I offered a suggestion.

"Mason has records on every kid who's ever been through this orphanage. Maybe we can comb through them carefully and see if something was missed. Like maybe the heiress was actually adopted out already, and me looking like Mrs. Cox is just a coincidence."

With our lives on the line, we decided to go all out and headed to the orphanage director's office.

Laurel was always Mason Lane's favorite. A little sweet talk, and we got permission to look at the files.

We went through every single record, including kids who had been adopted and kids who hadn't. We checked them all.

Unfortunately, the only ones whose ages matched were indeed just the four of us.

Mason also said that when we were left at the orphanage gate, we were only a few months old. There was no way the ages were wrong.

Not only that, Mason revealed something else.

Orson was certain the heiress was in the orphanage because the nanny who had swapped the babies had confessed in person.

I felt a wave of despair. "So the heiress really is one of us!"

Rebecca was quick to distance herself. "More accurately, it's you."

I let out a cold laugh. "You think you can escape?"

Everyone's face went pale.

All four of us had been brutally killed by the Coxes before, for the exact same reason. The other three had been killed almost immediately after going to claim the family.

None of us dared to gamble on whether nothing would happen if no one stepped forward.

I clenched my teeth.

"There's one more option."

Under their puzzled stares, I enunciated, "I'll personally go meet Mr. Cox and see what secrets they're hiding."

The three of them were so moved that they promised they would pray for my soul after I died.

That really wasn't necessary.

I wasn't sacrificing myself for anyone else. I just couldn't accept it. I couldn't understand why I, of all people, was labeled a fraud.

If they didn't want to acknowledge me, they could've pretended nothing ever happened.

Why go through all this trouble, lure me back with a great fortune, and then kill me?

In those fake-heiress stories, no matter how biased the parents were, they never played games this twisted.

Given how ruthless the Coxes were, I really didn't dare walk straight up to their door.

The nanny's family eventually noticed that the Coxes had started to suspect them.So they moved up their plan, kidnapped the real family of three, and took their place. Then, in order to get the billion-dollar estate, they started searching for the heiress. They figured that as long as the heiress was killed as well, the inheritance would belong to them completely. The transfer agreement I signed was fake. It was just a prop to fool everyone into thinking they truly loved the heiress. That way, once the heiress died, they could easily dodge responsibility. They never planned to do a DNA test at all. They felt guilty and only wanted the inheritance as fast as possible. That was why, when they saw me at the restaurant, their first instinct was to take me home and kill me.They just didn't expect me to escape. That also explained why the other three girls from the orphanage were killed the moment they tried to claim the family. The three from the orphanage were completely stunned

The three of them looked conflicted. After a long pause, one of them finally spoke."But deciding all three of them are fake just based on that feels a little shaky, doesn't it?"Seeing my expression darken, they hurried to explain."We're not doubting you. We just need stronger evidence. Otherwise, with what we've done, we could really end up in prison."Rebecca even pointed at my so-called brother, Keith. "He looks a lot like you, too. Just not much like your dad."Laurel muttered quietly, "Are you sure this isn't just a wild guess?"Rebecca kicked her impatiently. "Why are you talking nonsense? Whether they're real or fake, we can just do another DNA test."Vita raised an objection. "Wait, didn't they already do one? It showed they're biologically related. What's the point of doing it again?"Watching the three of them struggle to figure it out, I couldn't help feeling exasperated."Keith could've had plastic surgery, too. So my real parents might not be dead at all. They

Looking at how united the three of them were for the first time ever, I felt a little dazed. The orphanage had limited resources to begin with. We barely scraped by.So from the very start, we fought each other just to fill our stomachs, snatching food from one another.I didn't even remember who threw the first punch anymore. I only remember that every one of us wanted to hoard the other three's food for ourselves.Every now and then, people came to the orphanage looking to adopt. But they could never take everyone. We all wanted to be chosen, so we could finally live a better life.So while desperately trying to show off our good sides, we also sabotaged the other three, making sure they embarrassed themselves so the adopters wouldn't want them. The result was that none of us got adopted. At the end of the day, we were just abandoned kids who still longed for a home and for love.Once we grew up and realized adoption was no longer an option, that desperation turned into fier

Orson screamed in pain, but still refused to change his story."We really are your parents! We already gave you the inheritance! Why would we still want to kill you?""It was honestly just a joke to help you relax!"I let out a cold scoff and turned the voltage up higher."Fine. You don't have to talk. I already know the truth, anyway."All that was missing now was proof. Their bedroom definitely held clues.I grabbed a decorative piece off the table and knocked all three of them unconscious. Then I headed out, planning to search their room.I didn't notice that the moment I stepped out, they had already untied themselves and followed after me.The three of them lunged at me at the same time, pinning me down in the hallway and slapping me hard across the face."You damn little nobody! You really think you're something special now?""You're dead!"Keith stomped on my wrist, making it impossible for me to use the stun gun.One against three, I was at a huge disadvantage.Gil

The noise downstairs gradually faded away. The party must've ended.I heard footsteps outside the door, belonging to three people. They pushed the door open and walked in.It was Orson, Gillian, and my brother, Keith Cox. The moment they saw me, their expressions twisted into rage."You're a fake. How dare you come here and impersonate a Cox!"The three of them shoved me toward the balcony, ready to throw me off."You deserve to die!"My body tilted backward slightly, as if everything was about to replay just like my last life.At the critical moment, I switched on the stun gun I had already been gripping in my hand and jabbed it wildly at all three of them.Their bodies convulsed from the shock, and they loosened their grip on me.I didn't stop right away. I kept shocking them over and over. I only stopped once all three of them had collapsed unconscious.I struggled to drag them together, back to back, then tore the bedsheets into strips and tied them up tight. When they

"It's me."My tone was firm, but there was helplessness in it, too.The three of them were so angry that they nearly hit me."We think it's you, too, but the point is the Coxes will kill you!"They paced around anxiously."They clearly already drafted the billion-dollar inheritance agreement. They're just waiting for the heiress to sign it. So why would they kill you the moment you're confirmed as the heiress?"Rebecca clutched her head."Could it be that they think your DNA test was fake and believe you lied to them?"I shook my head."Whatever the reason is, there's one thing that's certain: I am the heiress."They couldn't figure out what I was planning, and they couldn't stop me. All they could do was agree to adapt and cooperate when the time came.On the third day, Yvette arrived with the Coxes. They also brought the DNA test results. I was indeed the Coxes' biological daughter. The two of them pulled me into their arms, crying with excitement. The three girls from
