INICIAR SESIÓNRhea's POV
I had broken every rule I made for myself in one morning and there was nothing left to do but fall apart in a locked stall and hope no one came in, crying hard into my palms. My head jerked up when I heard approaching footsteps. My pulse went from zero to everything in half a second. I held my breath, watching the gap beneath the stall door. "Hey." I recognized the voice, my chest loosened by the smallest degree. Elzbieta. She was in my class. The plus-sized girl people made fun of. She had seen my real face once by accident. Since then, she had been trying to be my friend but I always ignore her. "Please, go a-way." my voice came out hoarse and rough and wrong. "I can't go away, Rhea." her voice was quiet. "You need to get out. I'm willing to help. We will figure something out together." I didn't answer. But I needed something. Even just a plan for getting through today, or for just the next hour. I sat there for a moment longer, turning it over. Then I stood up and pushed the door open. She looked at me with concern or pity, or both. She handed me paper towels and stood beside me while I took off my glasses and washed my face properly. "Naomi asked you to do this, right?" I bit my lip and nodded slowly. She thought for a moment. "Okay. We can't tell on her, that much is obvious. But what if we find one of Jiles' friends? You go to them, show how sorry you are. It's better than waiting for whatever comes next." Going to Jiles directly was not a thing that existed in any world I was capable of walking into. But his friends were different. At least two of them. "Do you think that will actually work?" I asked in a small voice. "At least let's give it a shot. Classes will start soon. We need to move before the hallways go empty." Empty classrooms and bathrooms were where bullies did their best work. I dried my face, reapplied my foundation and checked the coverage before walking out. The moment we stepped into class, something flew at my head. I flinched. A water bottle missed me by inches and hit the wall behind me. "How fvcking dare you stain our demi-god, you ugly motherfvcking piece of mute shit?" The girl was standing at her desk, her face red with genuine fury like I had done something to her personally. "Just so you know, Jiles won't spare you," another one added. "Your days in this school are numbered." The shiver ran through me before I could stop it. I turned to Elz. She gave me a small, steady nod, and we went to our seats. After classes, we went to the senior's wing. Girls from different classes stopped to say things as we passed, but we were lucky to stopped a female senior who actually looked at us without immediate hostility and asked where Jiles' friends might be. She told us they were at the corner of the rink building. Their usual spot. Elz and I looked at each other. No regular student went to that corner. It wasn't a written rule, just an understood one. Even Elz hesitated. "I will go." I said. She looked at me. "Rhea…" "Wait here." I told her. She stayed back with both our bags, and I walked toward the corner by myself, each step feeling like my heart climbed higher. I was a few steps away from the main corner when Jiles came out from somewhere I hadn't been watching, or at least that was how it felt. I gasped and stumbled back, shock written all over me before I could arrange my face into anything else. He looked at me. His face was blank and cold, the same way it had been in the corridor. Before I could find a word to say, he had raised the water bottle in his hand and emptied the entire water over my face. I went completely rigid, stumbling a step back. The water was cold. It ran down my forehead, into my eyes, down my cheeks and my chin. I did not even think to wipe it off. Then he took the glasses off my face. I flinched but I did not pull back. I do not know if that was bravery or shock. My body just would not move. I stood there and let him look at me, and I didn't like how small and unprotected I felt without them. My lips were pressed together, trembling. I was trying so hard not to cry or say the wrong thing. My eyes were stinging from the water, and I was looking at him with something that was not quite fear but had fear in it. "You shouldn't do that," I said eventually. "Why did you come here?" he almost interrupted me, sternly. I looked up. "B-Because I wanted to apologize for what I did. I shouldn't have done that and I'm sorry." He let the silence sit. It felt heavy and endless. "Saying sorry isn't going to fix things. It just tells me you've realized the mistake," he took one step closer and I felt my eyes widen behind the wet lenses. "But I prefer balance, so your apology? Keep it.” My lips parted and tears were already forming and I could not stop them. "I couldn't say no. I would have..." "That's why I'm going to deal with you in my OWN WAY.” The emphasis was as clear as his intent, making my stomach twisted with despair.Rhea's POV"I can't believe he's making you do this." Elz fell into step beside me as we moved through the hall after class. "Now I support the saying never judge a book by its cover. From afar, he's so hot, but deep down he's a jerk."I swallowed without saying anything. His words had been ringing in my head through every single class that day, tangled up with what Cleo had said to me yesterday. I had told Elz I had another errand to run, and she hadn't been able to hide how annoyed that made her."Ricky's the big jerk. Jiles is more cool than him." I found myself saying, finding some strange type of relief saying it out.If he hadn't opened his mouth to talk to me at all, Jiles would have had no reason to speak to me the way he had. Maybe we would even had talked properly. Maybe he would have taken the tea without all of that."No. I think Ricky is more cool."I turned to look at her properly with my eyebrows halfway up, genuinely thrown that she had said that. Ricky's reputation wa
Rhea's POVI walked into school that morning with my mind already anticipating seeing him again before I had even made it through the gates. I headed straight for the senior wing to drop off his things, the bag swinging against my hip when a hand tapped my shoulder from behind.I startled and spun around, finding Ricky there, arms crossed, watching me with that same bored disdain he always seemed to carry around.Out of everyone in Jiles' group, Ricky was the one I liked least. He was the guy who had a different girl on his arm every other week and something about him always made my skin crawl in a way none of the others did.I lowered my gaze and stepped aside, assuming he just wanted to get past but he didn't move. I glanced up briefly, then away again, and started walking when his voice stopped me."Now I see how you got tagged as the mute."I turned back around and found him looking at me with something close to disgust.I didn't say anything. I just turned to leave, deciding I wo
Rhea's POVThe automatic doors slid open and I stepped inside, already feeling the cold blast of air conditioning hit me through the hoodie. A woman behind the counter glanced up, did a visible double take at the shades and the cap and the way I had my hoodie strings pulled tight under my chin, and I pretended not to notice."Hi." I kept my voice steady. "I'm here to collect an order. Jiles asked me to pick it up.""Jiles?" She tilted her head, already reaching for a clipboard. "We don't have any order under that name.""Jiles Ashford," I added quickly."You're here to collect Mr. Ashford's goods?"The voice came from behind me and I turned to find a man in a store uniform walking toward us, already pulling a phone out of his back pocket."Yes." I nodded."Right, good, you're here." He glanced at his screen. "He just sent the order through, but a few of the items he wanted aren't actually in stock."My stomach dropped slightly. "What happens now?""You will have to wait a moment." He
Rhea's POV When I arrived at the orphanage, I could hear the kids arguing with each other. I opened the door and their eyes turned to me. “Rhea is back!” Tobi cheered and I laughed, doing a small wave with my hands. “Oh, yes, babies. I'm back.” I sing-songed, chuckling. “Look. I did the whole thing and I didn't go outside the lines.” Mikey said, holding his coloring book for me to see. “Wow. That's so good.” "No, it's not. He went outside the lines," Ada argued, without even looking up from her coloring book. “No, I didn't.” “You did.” "Let me see." I stepped forward and crouched down next to Mikey, studying the page. "I think you did great. The dragon looks fierce." "See." He stuck his tongue out at Ada. I chuckled, watching them argue over the drawings before going to the pantry to grab something to eat before dinner then went to my room. I dropped my bag by the door, freshen up, dropped onto my bed, and pulled my books out to actually get some studying done. I had barel
Rhea's POVMy notebook stayed open in front of me, my pen stayed in my hand, but none of it actually went anywhere. I was trying to decide if I should feel insulted or just confused at the word.On the other hand, there's this inner part of me that felt giddy and excited to finally get a real chance to speak to him after two years. That fact didn't leave my head.By the time the final bell rang, I figured I would have to study properly once I get home. I was packing my books when Elz dropped into the seat beside mine."Hey." She said and I looked up.My lips curved into a smile, “Hey, hi.”“I didn't see you at lunch.”I pressed my lips together, “I got caught up with something that's why.”Her eyes narrowed and I immediately shook my head. “It's not what you think at all. And I never got a chance to say a real thank you for yesterday.” I paused, “Thank you so much for helping. It means a lot to me.”She smiled. “Don't mention. So… d-does that mean we're friends now?" She asked with li
Rhea's POVAll I could think about was the way he had looked at me after the water washed the foundation off my face. How did he know I had foundation on?I rolled onto my side and pulled the blanket tighter around myself. I barely slept that night. Every time I closed my eyes I saw his face.By morning, I already felt exhausted. Funny enough, I didn't have that dream overnight, just my mind disturbed by what happened the previous day. When I arrived at school, the stares and whispers started. Which was expected because of what happened yesterday.I tried not to let it get to me. When I got to my locker and opened it, a folded piece of paper fell out.I caught it before it hit the floor. There was nothing written on the outside. I stood there for a second, my heart turned uncomfortable instantly and then I opened it.Class 14. Free period. Don't be late. —JI stared at the words, my heart skipping. He wants to see me? Why? Did he have questions? His expression didn't reveal much yeste
