Rhea's POV

My notebook stayed open in front of me, my pen stayed in my hand, but none of it actually went anywhere. I was trying to decide if I should feel insulted or just confused at the word.

On the other hand, there's this inner part of me that felt giddy and excited to finally get a real chance to speak to him after two years. That fact didn't leave my head.

By the time the final bell rang, I figured I would have to study properly once I get home. I was packing my books when Elz dropped into the seat beside mine.

"Hey." She said and I looked up.

My lips curved into a smile, “Hey, hi.”

“I didn't see you at lunch.”

I pressed my lips together, “I got caught up with something that's why.”

Her eyes narrowed and I immediately shook my head. “It's not what you think at all. And I never got a chance to say a real thank you for yesterday.” I paused, “Thank you so much for helping. It means a lot to me.”

She smiled. “Don't mention. So… d-does that mean we're friends now?" She asked with light nervousness.

I looked at her for a second, weighing the answer before answering. She had stayed with me in that stall when she had no reason to, and I didn't have a good reason to keep her at arm's length.

"Friends.” I said, and meant it.

“Yay! I'm so glad to be your friend.” she beamed.

I chuckled. “Me too.”

She swung her bag over one shoulder, and we headed for the doors together. I was still half tangled in my own thoughts, when a junior I didn't recognize jogged up alongside us.

"Rhea, Jiles is waiting for you in the lot." She walked away after saying.

Elz's head whipped toward me. "What does he want now?"

My stomach dropped slightly. Is this what being his errand girl actually looks like, him summoning me whenever he pleases?

"I don't know," I admitted. "I'm supposed to be his errand girl now actually. I think this is just how it's going to be."

She paused, confused. “Errand girl?”

I nodded, giving her a brief explanation as we continued walking. But she couldn't help but panic.

“Oh my God, Rhea. That's not a small thing. Getting tangled up with the hockey boys, especially him, that's a whole mess waiting to happen."

"He's not that bad though." I found myself saying. "He's just upset I egged him. I kind of deserved whatever this is."

"It was Naomi who forced that on you. You didn't deserve anything." She said it firmly, like she needed me to actually hear it.

I didn't have a response to that, so I just swallowed and told her I would find her later, and went looking for his car.

He was easy to spot, parked at the far end of the lot. Elz hung back near the entrance, arms crossed, watching. I made myself walk the distance and knocked lightly on his window.

The glass rolled down and I made the mistake of looking at him, noticing how good he looked in the afternoon light. My heart gave an embarrassing little stutter before I managed to speak.

"Hi."

He just stretched one hand out toward me, lazy and expectant. "Your phone."

My brows pulled together. "Uhm. What about it?"

He raised an eyebrow instead of answering, giving me a look that made it clear he wasn't going to repeat himself. I didn't have much choice.

I dug it out of my bag and handed it over, watching his eyes catch on the crack running across the screen.

"I broke it yesterday," I said quickly, before he could ask. "Haven't had time to get it fixed."

He didn't say anything to that. He turned it over once in his hand, thumb moving across the screen, and I stood there watching him do whatever he was doing, too nervous to ask.

A second later his own phone buzzed against the passenger seat, and my eyes widened, realizing exactly what he had just done.

He handed my phone back through the window.

"Easier than sending someone to drag you out of your classroom every single time."

Then he rolled the window up and pulled out of the lot without another word, leaving me standing there, completely frozen.

Elz appeared beside me a minute later, slightly out of breath from jogging over. "Well? What did he say?”

Rhea's POV"I can't believe he's making you do this." Elz fell into step beside me as we moved through the hall after class. "Now I support the saying never judge a book by its cover. From afar, he's so hot, but deep down he's a jerk."I swallowed without saying anything. His words had been ringing in my head through every single class that day, tangled up with what Cleo had said to me yesterday. I had told Elz I had another errand to run, and she hadn't been able to hide how annoyed that made her."Ricky's the big jerk. Jiles is more cool than him." I found myself saying, finding some strange type of relief saying it out.If he hadn't opened his mouth to talk to me at all, Jiles would have had no reason to speak to me the way he had. Maybe we would even had talked properly. Maybe he would have taken the tea without all of that."No. I think Ricky is more cool."I turned to look at her properly with my eyebrows halfway up, genuinely thrown that she had said that. Ricky's reputation wa

Rhea's POVI walked into school that morning with my mind already anticipating seeing him again before I had even made it through the gates. I headed straight for the senior wing to drop off his things, the bag swinging against my hip when a hand tapped my shoulder from behind.I startled and spun around, finding Ricky there, arms crossed, watching me with that same bored disdain he always seemed to carry around.Out of everyone in Jiles' group, Ricky was the one I liked least. He was the guy who had a different girl on his arm every other week and something about him always made my skin crawl in a way none of the others did.I lowered my gaze and stepped aside, assuming he just wanted to get past but he didn't move. I glanced up briefly, then away again, and started walking when his voice stopped me."Now I see how you got tagged as the mute."I turned back around and found him looking at me with something close to disgust.I didn't say anything. I just turned to leave, deciding I wo

Rhea's POVThe automatic doors slid open and I stepped inside, already feeling the cold blast of air conditioning hit me through the hoodie. A woman behind the counter glanced up, did a visible double take at the shades and the cap and the way I had my hoodie strings pulled tight under my chin, and I pretended not to notice."Hi." I kept my voice steady. "I'm here to collect an order. Jiles asked me to pick it up.""Jiles?" She tilted her head, already reaching for a clipboard. "We don't have any order under that name.""Jiles Ashford," I added quickly."You're here to collect Mr. Ashford's goods?"The voice came from behind me and I turned to find a man in a store uniform walking toward us, already pulling a phone out of his back pocket."Yes." I nodded."Right, good, you're here." He glanced at his screen. "He just sent the order through, but a few of the items he wanted aren't actually in stock."My stomach dropped slightly. "What happens now?""You will have to wait a moment." He

Rhea's POV When I arrived at the orphanage, I could hear the kids arguing with each other. I opened the door and their eyes turned to me. “Rhea is back!” Tobi cheered and I laughed, doing a small wave with my hands. “Oh, yes, babies. I'm back.” I sing-songed, chuckling. “Look. I did the whole thing and I didn't go outside the lines.” Mikey said, holding his coloring book for me to see. “Wow. That's so good.” "No, it's not. He went outside the lines," Ada argued, without even looking up from her coloring book. “No, I didn't.” “You did.” "Let me see." I stepped forward and crouched down next to Mikey, studying the page. "I think you did great. The dragon looks fierce." "See." He stuck his tongue out at Ada. I chuckled, watching them argue over the drawings before going to the pantry to grab something to eat before dinner then went to my room. I dropped my bag by the door, freshen up, dropped onto my bed, and pulled my books out to actually get some studying done. I had barel
