I walked into school that morning with my mind already anticipating seeing him again before I had even made it through the gates. I headed straight for the senior wing to drop off his things, the bag swinging against my hip when a hand tapped my shoulder from behind. I startled and spun around, finding Ricky there, arms crossed, watching me with that same bored disdain he always seemed to carry around. Out of everyone in Jiles' group, Ricky was the one I liked least. He was the guy who had a different girl on his arm every other week and something about him always made my skin crawl in a way none of the others did. I lowered my gaze and stepped aside, assuming he just wanted to get past but he didn't move. I glanced up briefly, then away again, and started walking when his voice stopped me. "Now I see how you got tagged as the mute." I turned back around and found him looking at me with something close to disgust. I didn't say anything. I just turned to leave, deciding I would just text Jiles instead and find out where he actually was. "Come back here." The authority in his voice made me pause despite myself. I turned around and he closed the distance between us. "What are you doing here?" I let the silence stretch deliberately before I answered. "Why?" "You're in my class and you're asking me why? You've really got some nerve." He tilted his head, studying me like I was a puzzle. "Makes me wonder why Jiles didn't do worse to you yesterday. Guy holds grudges over smaller stuff than getting egged in front of the whole school. Most people would've quit and transferred by now." Maybe it's because he's not like you, I wanted to say. But the words stayed stuck somewhere behind my teeth. Silence infuriated most people, I knew that much by now but it was still better than letting them hear my accent and spend the rest of the week mimicking it back at me. "Are you just going to stand there and not talk?" he snapped. "What's going on here?" Jiles' voice cut through before I could decide whether to answer. He stepped out of the classroom, eyes landing on Ricky first. "I found this Humpty Dumpty here." Ricky jerked his chin toward me, all attitude. "The one that egged you. Decided to play mute on me, apparently." "My name is Rhea." I couldn't stop myself from saying it. "Oh, it's Rhea?" His eyebrows shot up, mocking. "Didn't realize that since you're usually too busy being the school's resident mute expert who happens to egg my best friend in front of the entire school. And now here you are again. For what, exactly?" He said it like I had personally wronged him, like he hadn't been the one blocking my path in the first place. Jiles' eyes moved to me then, flicking down to the bag in my hand. I lifted it slightly, an answer without words, and he looked back at Ricky with an expression that was clearly excuse us. Ricky muttered something under his breath and walked off without another word. Jiles turned to me again. "Good morning," I offered, and held the bag out toward him. He took it without a word, leaving me to swallow back whatever else I had planned to say. I watched him sort through the contents, checking each item. Then he looked up, dug into his pocket, and a set of keys came flying at me. I caught them against my chest with both hands. "One Gatorade. Fries and sausage. There's cash in my locker. Third one down. Be here by lunch and take the amount you used to get this.” He turned to walk away. My eyes widened slightly, realizing this was another errand. But something in me refused to just let him walk away like that. “Jiles, wait." He actually turned around, bored expression fully intact. I swallowed down my nervousness. "A-About yesterday. Are you mad at me? Because I rejected the order before going through with it?" I have been thinking about this all night long when he didn't reply to my text. But instead of answering, he just looked away and kept walking. "Please, wait." My voice came out steadier this time. He stopped again. I stood there a second, nerves climbing, before I slid my bag off my shoulder and dug through it until I found the small bottle tucked near the bottom. I held it out to him. "It's a tea," I said, my voice dropping slightly. "I couldn't stop thinking about the medication, and the tea reminded me of what used to help me sleep. I thought maybe you might, I don't know. Want it." "No." He started to turn again. "Try it once." I held it out further. "I promise you will like it." That made him actually stop and turn fully around, a small frown settling across his face. "Now you can talk?" His tone had an edge to it I didn't recognize. "How does it feel, me hearing you talk and then just walking away from it?" My heart started climbing, unsure where exactly he was steering this. "Did I do something?" "I guess that's how Naomi got away with pushing you around.” His voice stayed even. “This whole not wanting to talk attracts exactly this kind of nonsense. Not wanting to be noticed doesn't mean you have to let people walk all over you. I watched you stand there and take whatever Ric was throwing at you without a single word back and that's sickening to watch.” He didn't wait for a response. He turned and walked off, leaving me standing there with the water bottle still stretched out toward nothing, his words landing somewhere raw and already bruised. I swallowed hard against the lump rising in my throat, blinked back the sting building behind my eyes, and forced myself to walk toward my classroom before anyone could see.Rhea's POVI was walking a step behind him after practice, my phone buzzing against my palm. Cleo, again, asking where I was since I was way past my usual time. I typed back quickly, explaining Jiles happened. We reached his car and he pulled the driver's door open, dropping into his seat before reaching back to lower the back window for me. I forced a small smile his way as I slid his notebook onto the back seat, trying not to stare too long at how handsome he looked, sweat clinging to his hairline and exhaustion written all over him in a way that somehow didn't make him any less impossible to look at.Then I handed him the water bottle through the driver's window, still smiling despite myself. "I can make you another one tomorrow."He sighed, hand already on the door handle to pull it shut. "Just text me the name."He said it right as the engine turned over, and my stomach sank slightly. Here we go again."Only the house mistress knows the name. I don't think she will tell me, hones
Rhea's POVI was still halfway lost in the teacher's explanation when a folded piece of paper landed on my desk. I looked up and found Elz two seats over, watching me with her eyebrows raised.I unfolded it under the desk.Where were you at lunch? I looked everywhere.I scribbled back fast. Sorry. Jiles didn't let me go. I will explain after class.I slid it back across when the teacher turned to the board and Elz read it, nodded once, and faced forward again. I didn't have her number yet which was the only reason I hadn't texted her about my movement and some small part of me felt guilty for making her chase paper notes across the classroom to find out where I had disappeared to.I tried to focus throughout rest of the period. But as we approached the closing hours, my mind started drifting to the rink, to him skating, to the fact that I was actually going to be allowed to stand there and watch instead of sneaking in just to catch a few seconds of him on the ice and record him with m
Rhea's POV"I can't believe he's making you do this." Elz fell into step beside me as we moved through the hall after class. "Now I support the saying never judge a book by its cover. From afar, he's so hot, but deep down he's a jerk."I swallowed without saying anything. His words had been ringing in my head through every single class that day, tangled up with what Cleo had said to me yesterday. I had told Elz I had another errand to run, and she hadn't been able to hide how annoyed that made her."Ricky's the big jerk. Jiles is more cool than him." I found myself saying, finding some strange type of relief saying it out.If he hadn't opened his mouth to talk to me at all, Jiles would have had no reason to speak to me the way he had. Maybe we would even had talked properly. Maybe he would have taken the tea without all of that."No. I think Ricky is more cool."I turned to look at her properly with my eyebrows halfway up, genuinely thrown that she had said that. Ricky's reputation wa

Rhea's POVThe automatic doors slid open and I stepped inside, already feeling the cold blast of air conditioning hit me through the hoodie. A woman behind the counter glanced up, did a visible double take at the shades and the cap and the way I had my hoodie strings pulled tight under my chin, and I pretended not to notice."Hi." I kept my voice steady. "I'm here to collect an order. Jiles asked me to pick it up.""Jiles?" She tilted her head, already reaching for a clipboard. "We don't have any order under that name.""Jiles Ashford," I added quickly."You're here to collect Mr. Ashford's goods?"The voice came from behind me and I turned to find a man in a store uniform walking toward us, already pulling a phone out of his back pocket."Yes." I nodded."Right, good, you're here." He glanced at his screen. "He just sent the order through, but a few of the items he wanted aren't actually in stock."My stomach dropped slightly. "What happens now?""You will have to wait a moment." He
Rhea's POV When I arrived at the orphanage, I could hear the kids arguing with each other. I opened the door and their eyes turned to me. “Rhea is back!” Tobi cheered and I laughed, doing a small wave with my hands. “Oh, yes, babies. I'm back.” I sing-songed, chuckling. “Look. I did the whole thing and I didn't go outside the lines.” Mikey said, holding his coloring book for me to see. “Wow. That's so good.” "No, it's not. He went outside the lines," Ada argued, without even looking up from her coloring book. “No, I didn't.” “You did.” "Let me see." I stepped forward and crouched down next to Mikey, studying the page. "I think you did great. The dragon looks fierce." "See." He stuck his tongue out at Ada. I chuckled, watching them argue over the drawings before going to the pantry to grab something to eat before dinner then went to my room. I dropped my bag by the door, freshen up, dropped onto my bed, and pulled my books out to actually get some studying done. I had barel
