Chapter Four: Mouse

Rhea's POV

All I could think about was the way he had looked at me after the water washed the foundation off my face. How did he know I had foundation on?

I rolled onto my side and pulled the blanket tighter around myself. I barely slept that night. Every time I closed my eyes I saw his face.

By morning, I already felt exhausted. Funny enough, I didn't have that dream overnight, just my mind disturbed by what happened the previous day.

When I arrived at school, the stares and whispers started. Which was expected because of what happened yesterday.

I tried not to let it get to me. When I got to my locker and opened it, a folded piece of paper fell out.

I caught it before it hit the floor. There was nothing written on the outside. I stood there for a second, my heart turned uncomfortable instantly and then I opened it.

Class 14. Free period. Don't be late. —J

I stared at the words, my heart skipping.

He wants to see me? Why? Did he have questions?

His expression didn't reveal much yesterday, and deeply, I had been truly curious about what he thinks of my real face.

I sat through two classes without hearing a single word, just anticipating meeting him. Even though the circumstances was somewhat unfortunate, I was hugely glad that I was meeting him one-on-one again.

And maybe, I could apologize properly today. When lunch hour came, I folded the note into my pocket and went.

Class 14 was near the back of the building. Nobody went there unless they had a reason.

The door was slightly open.

I pushed it and stepped inside. The chairs were up on some of the desks. The door clicked shut behind me.

My eyes found his at the far end of the room. My heart flipped. I fidgeted immediately, already nervous under the weight of his eyes.

He was sitting with one ankle over his knee, blazer on, completely unhurried. I looked somewhere else for about two seconds and then looked back at him because I couldn't help it.

He stood up.

I kept myself rooted even though everything in me wanted to step back. He didn't come toward me. He stayed where he was, hands in his pockets, and looked at me with that same expression.

"You pissed me off. That makes you indebted to me. Actions have consequences." he said directly.

My heart sank at the realization of why he had called me here. I gulped and tried to explain but he beat me at it.

"Your punishment is simple. When I need something done, you do it. Something fetched. Something carried. Somewhere I need a person without it being me. You become that person."

I stared.

What registered in my brain was that I was going to be around him regularly. For years, he had never once looked in my direction and now, he wasn't just looking, he was arranging for me to be nearby on a regular basis and I had to stand here and keep my face completely neutral about it.

"F-For how long." I managed.

"Until I say otherwise."

My stomach turned over. Maybe I need to explain a little bit.

I opened my mouth, "N-Naomi threatened me, you know that right? And I had no choice but to…"

He raised one hand.

That was enough to make me shut up.

"You had the chance to say no. Giving in to her lame threats is now going to cost you more than throwing that egg did."

My brows shot up slightly behind my glasses. Does he think being around him is going to be a hassle for me?

The fact that I was standing here, exchanging words with him, was making my chest flutter in ways it hadn't in fifteen years of my life.

The room was quiet. He spoke up again;

"You're good at being invisible. That's the only reason you're useful."

As much as it should have sting, it didn't much since it was coming from him. But then, I looked at the floor and pressed my lips together. I don't want him to see me less.

Then my brows twitched… wait he saw my face yesterday. Why isn't he making any comment about it?

I raised my head up to meet his eyes. "Can I ask you a question?"

He stared at me, as if debating the right answer before he finally said, "No."

My eyes widened. "You didn't even…"

"Go back to your class, mouse. I will call you when I need you."

I blinked.

Mouse?

"My name is Rhea."

His expression didn't change when I said that. "You don't tell me what to call you. Leave now." his voice sharpened just enough to make me move.

Rhea's POV"I can't believe he's making you do this." Elz fell into step beside me as we moved through the hall after class. "Now I support the saying never judge a book by its cover. From afar, he's so hot, but deep down he's a jerk."I swallowed without saying anything. His words had been ringing in my head through every single class that day, tangled up with what Cleo had said to me yesterday. I had told Elz I had another errand to run, and she hadn't been able to hide how annoyed that made her."Ricky's the big jerk. Jiles is more cool than him." I found myself saying, finding some strange type of relief saying it out.If he hadn't opened his mouth to talk to me at all, Jiles would have had no reason to speak to me the way he had. Maybe we would even had talked properly. Maybe he would have taken the tea without all of that."No. I think Ricky is more cool."I turned to look at her properly with my eyebrows halfway up, genuinely thrown that she had said that. Ricky's reputation wa

Rhea's POVI walked into school that morning with my mind already anticipating seeing him again before I had even made it through the gates. I headed straight for the senior wing to drop off his things, the bag swinging against my hip when a hand tapped my shoulder from behind.I startled and spun around, finding Ricky there, arms crossed, watching me with that same bored disdain he always seemed to carry around.Out of everyone in Jiles' group, Ricky was the one I liked least. He was the guy who had a different girl on his arm every other week and something about him always made my skin crawl in a way none of the others did.I lowered my gaze and stepped aside, assuming he just wanted to get past but he didn't move. I glanced up briefly, then away again, and started walking when his voice stopped me."Now I see how you got tagged as the mute."I turned back around and found him looking at me with something close to disgust.I didn't say anything. I just turned to leave, deciding I wo

Rhea's POVThe automatic doors slid open and I stepped inside, already feeling the cold blast of air conditioning hit me through the hoodie. A woman behind the counter glanced up, did a visible double take at the shades and the cap and the way I had my hoodie strings pulled tight under my chin, and I pretended not to notice."Hi." I kept my voice steady. "I'm here to collect an order. Jiles asked me to pick it up.""Jiles?" She tilted her head, already reaching for a clipboard. "We don't have any order under that name.""Jiles Ashford," I added quickly."You're here to collect Mr. Ashford's goods?"The voice came from behind me and I turned to find a man in a store uniform walking toward us, already pulling a phone out of his back pocket."Yes." I nodded."Right, good, you're here." He glanced at his screen. "He just sent the order through, but a few of the items he wanted aren't actually in stock."My stomach dropped slightly. "What happens now?""You will have to wait a moment." He

Rhea's POV When I arrived at the orphanage, I could hear the kids arguing with each other. I opened the door and their eyes turned to me. “Rhea is back!” Tobi cheered and I laughed, doing a small wave with my hands. “Oh, yes, babies. I'm back.” I sing-songed, chuckling. “Look. I did the whole thing and I didn't go outside the lines.” Mikey said, holding his coloring book for me to see. “Wow. That's so good.” "No, it's not. He went outside the lines," Ada argued, without even looking up from her coloring book. “No, I didn't.” “You did.” "Let me see." I stepped forward and crouched down next to Mikey, studying the page. "I think you did great. The dragon looks fierce." "See." He stuck his tongue out at Ada. I chuckled, watching them argue over the drawings before going to the pantry to grab something to eat before dinner then went to my room. I dropped my bag by the door, freshen up, dropped onto my bed, and pulled my books out to actually get some studying done. I had barel

Rhea's POVMy notebook stayed open in front of me, my pen stayed in my hand, but none of it actually went anywhere. I was trying to decide if I should feel insulted or just confused at the word.On the other hand, there's this inner part of me that felt giddy and excited to finally get a real chance to speak to him after two years. That fact didn't leave my head.By the time the final bell rang, I figured I would have to study properly once I get home. I was packing my books when Elz dropped into the seat beside mine."Hey." She said and I looked up.My lips curved into a smile, “Hey, hi.”“I didn't see you at lunch.”I pressed my lips together, “I got caught up with something that's why.”Her eyes narrowed and I immediately shook my head. “It's not what you think at all. And I never got a chance to say a real thank you for yesterday.” I paused, “Thank you so much for helping. It means a lot to me.”She smiled. “Don't mention. So… d-does that mean we're friends now?" She asked with li
