CHAPTER 3

“Also I drew up the papers for the contract, I mailed it to you. And also I brought in the papers you need to sign from our other companies, I mailed you the ones from abroad for approval”

“Thank you Sansa, that’ll be all for now, I think you should take the rest of the day off, you’ve outdone yourself today plus it is your birthday so…….”

she was smiling at this point, Sansa had only worked with me for a year, but somehow she had managed to be the best and has evaded anything that would lead to her being fired. I rummaged through my drawers and found the box. I am really awful at wrapping boxes, but I did try anyway.

“Don’t open it until your outside” I instructed with a straight face and then added a “happy birthday” with a softer smile.

I followed her out to the parking lot and watch from a distance as she opened the box, I could make out a gasping sound from her.

She brought out the keys and pressed the button, my heart almost broke for her as I watched her crumble to the ground in tears, she turned back to look at me as if she knew I was standing there watching.

I watched as she opened her brand new Chevrolet Camaro.

I had been watching her for quite a while, taking the subway very early in the morning just to make sure she gets here before I do, to set my table, for some reason, she always gets me coffee, which by the way, manages to still be hot when I walk into the office. I also remember the one time she was being followed by some odd looking men on her way to the substation, I promptly stopped and offered her a ride home, seeing as she was oblivious to what was happening in her surroundings at the time.

I trudged back inside, knowing the building should’ve been empty by now, well it should’ve unless I felt hands kneading my shoulders as I sat on my chair. I struggled hard to keep my groan of pleasure in. I looked up to see Edward standing there, his suit jacket and tie gone, his shirt buttons loosed to reveal his chest.

“What are you doing here? You aren’t supposed to be here” I muttered but my eyes were closing slowly.

I snapped them back open. “I think I’ll be heading home now” I said, bringing my hand up to the bridge of my nose again, but it was intercepted and a bottle of water was placed it in.

I gulped the entire bottle down in almost one go, I looked at the crumpled and empty bottle in shock, I must have really been thirsty then.

Then I proceeded to eat the burger and fries that Sansa had gotten me, with Edward sitting across from me on the other side of the table.

“You should have been gone by now? Why didn’t you leave?”

I asked yet again.

“Ah, I just wanted you to know that I admired your work ethic?”

“That sounded even more pathetic than, I’m attracted to you and I want us to have sex” I uttered matter-of-factly.

He choked on his spit and was coughing quite badly. But I just stared at him over the rim of my wine glass (don’t ask where the wine came from).

“Inasmuch as I admire your beauty and all, I am not interested in bedding you, my superior would have my head for dinner. In fact, I have a ma…, wife” he drawled.

My eyes were as wide as saucers, and it was my turn to start coughing, “you’re married?! Oh My Word, I’m so sorry, ugh! I can’t believe I just made a move on a married man” I was legit panicking when I saw the expression on his face, he was laughing!

“Really? You find this funny huh?” I said in a calmer voice. “It is fine, when she hears about who it was that hit on me, she’d go crazy with excitement instead of being upset” He said with a genuine smile.

I looked at him, not yet trusting what he just said, “why did you get so close to me on the balcony then, married men don’t move so close to unmarried women like that” I muttered with a frown.

He chuckled, “oh I’m sorry, I was just confirming if I still got it, or you could say, I was ……picking up the glass of wine you left on the balcony, you just happened to interpret it wrongly”

I huffed a breathe and presented another argument, “but…. I could swear I saw you looking at my cleavage, and checking me out!”

“Devonne, the tattoo on your chest and the birthmark on your arm weren’t exactly hidden with the kind of dress you wore, although, I did notice your body reacting to my proximity, but that was secondary” he said again, this time his eyes were pleading for me to believe him. And so I did, thankfully, I had a very short attention span when it came to all things men.

I let out a sigh of relief, “so when do I meet this lucky lady? Hm?”

“Soon enough, we’ll be hosting a ball, to celebrate the success of our business with you in about 5 months, soooooo yeah then” he said while scratching the back of his head

“5 months?! That’s a long time and you aren’t even sure if the business plans will be successful”

“One is allowed to be optimistic, I’ll be leaving you now my lady” he said standing up

I watched as he walked out of the office, damn, why are the good ones always taken? Looking at my history with men, I might’ve just used him for sex anyway. Shaking it off, I walked to the minibar in the lounge connecting to my office, connecting my cell phone to the large home theatre I had in my office, I played some music and poured myself some more wine, swaying to the music a bit while heading back to my office to tackle paperwork.
