Chapter 18: Scapegoats and Shields

"Quiet," Thalen hissed, his fingers frantically working the iron latch of the academy’s heavy side postern door while the cold pre-dawn wind whipped through his sodden cloak. "If we are caught by the warden's inspection detail, I am telling them you forced me into a life of petty maritime smuggling."

"Feel free," Zeyric panted, throwing his full shoulder against the warped oak until it groaned and clicked open with a rusted shriek. "I'm sure Headmaster Vance will be deeply moved by your aristocratically injured dignity while we're both scrubbing out the lower stables with toothbrushes."

The door gave way with a sudden, jarring thud, spilling them both into the damp, shadowed stone courtyard of the academy's inner ward. The silence of the predawn grounds felt heavy, almost suffocating, broken only by the distant, rhythmic tolling of the bell tower signaling the fourth hour.

"Quiet," Thalen whispered again, grabbing the back of Zeyric’s tunic and yanking him flat against the damp ivy-covered brickwork of the dormitory wall as a heavy patrol of iron-shod boots echoed sharply across the paved quadrangle.

"I am quiet," Zeyric hissed back, pressing his face so hard against the rough stone that a scraping of dried mortar dusted his eyelashes. "You're the one breathing like a broken steam-valve."

"That is because your anxiety is leaking through the bond again, you absolute idiot," Thalen shot back under his breath, his fingers curling instinctively into the damp wool of Zeyric’s sleeve. "Lower your heart rate. If Vance's ward-hounds catch the signature of our auras bouncing like frantic crickets, we won't even make it to the stairs."

"My heart rate is entirely reasonable under the circumstances," Zeyric muttered, though he forced his shoulders to drop, matching his breathing to the slow, measured cadence Thalen dragged through their shared mental pipeline. "Did you actually hide your family signet ring in my boot?"

"Yes. Now shut up. The patrols are turning the corner."

They slipped past the main dormitories just as the sun began to bleed a sickly, bruised violet over the jagged slate rooftops. But the expected sanctuary of their shared guest room did not wait for them. Instead, a cluster of university enforcers clad in brass-plated breastplates blocked the corridor, their arms crossed over heavy suppression staves.

"Thalen of House Vane. Zeyric Althaus," the lead enforcer barked, his voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceilings with grim finality. "Headmaster Vance summons you to the Grand Tribunal immediately. Do not attempt to cast, do not attempt to speak, and surrender all foci."

"On what grounds?" Thalen demanded, stepping forward with an instinctive flash of aristocratic arrogance, though his shoulders locked tight against the sudden, sharp spike of panic radiating from Zeyric’s half of the bond.

"On the grounds of unauthorized campus departure, suspected black-market trafficking, and the severe desecration of academy ward boundaries," the enforcer replied, stepping aside to reveal the heavy double doors of the tribunal hall standing wide open. "Move."

They were marched down the long, drafty corridor flanked by guards whose heavy boots hammered in synchronized cruelty against the marble flagstones. Every step felt like a march toward a scaffold. When the heavy oak doors swung inward, the sheer scale of the tribunal hit them like a physical blow. The grand hall was packed to the absolute rafters. Hundreds of upper-year apprentices stood shoulder-to-shoulder in tense, whispering rows along the tiered galleries, their faces stark and pale under the flickering light of floating magical lanterns.

At the far end of the hall, elevated on a dais of black basalt, sat Headmaster Vance. His robes were stiff with gold embroidery, and his face was carved from the same cold, unyielding stone as his seat. Flanking him were three senior faculty members, whispering among themselves with grim, closed expressions.

"Bring them forward," Vance commanded, his voice ringing through the cavernous room and instantly silencing the murmurs of the student body.

Thalen and Zeyric were shoved roughly to a halt in the center of the mosaic floor. The air in the room was thick with tension, smelling of ozone, old parchment, and the underlying metallic tang of fear.

"Thalen Vane," Vance began, leaning forward over the high mahogany desk, his pale eyes narrowing as they locked onto Thalen’s face. "And Zeyric Althaus. For weeks, the academy has suffered an unprecedented infiltration of dark, volatile magic. Wards have been shattered. Catacombs breached. And last night, our perimeter sensors registered a massive, illicit extraction of subterranean mana matching the exact signature of forbidden soul-tethering techniques."

"We were investigating an internal security breach that the faculty failed to address," Thalen interrupted, his voice cutting cleanly through the quiet hall. A collective gasp rippled through the student galleries.

"Silence, boy!" Vance slammed a heavy, ring-bearing fist onto the desk, sending a shockwave of mana that rattled the brass inkwells. "You are in no position to lecture this tribunal on security. You and your... unfortunate companion have demonstrated a blatant, reckless disregard for academy law. But the crimes do not stop at mere trespassing."

Vance gestured sharply to a pair of guards standing near the side alcove. "Bring out the primary suspect."

The heavy iron gate of the side holding cell dragged open with a horrific screech. Two guards hauled a figure forward into the harsh light of the central dais. It was Veyron.

A collective murmur of horror swept through the crowd. Veyron’s eyes were no longer human; they were pools of swirling, opaque violet, completely devoid of thought or focus. His skin had the grey, waxy pallor of a corpse, and his limbs twitched erratically as the guards forced him to his knees on the cold stones. He was utterly catatonic, unable to speak, blink, or defend himself.

"Look at him," Vance said, his voice dripping with theatrical disgust. "Driven to complete psychological ruin. His mind hollowed out, his life force siphoned away to fuel a parasitic soul-tether. And witnesses place you two in his company the very night he was infected."

"We didn't infect him!" Zeyric shouted, stepping half a pace forward before a heavy hand from an enforcer shoved him back between the shoulder blades. "He was already cursed when he broke into Thalen's suite! Someone inside this administration is driving him—and if you looked at the actual wards instead of staging a kangaroo court, you'd see it!"

"Insolence!" Vance's face flushed a dark, mottled crimson. "You dare accuse the administration of complicity while standing knee-deep in the very filth you manufactured?"

"He's not lying, Headmaster," a sharp, clear voice rang out from the side gallery.

The entire hall turned as Professor Starwyn pushed her way through the murmuring rows of students, her emerald robes rustling sharply. She strode down the steps and stopped just short of the basalt dais, her expression a mask of cold, uncompromising fury.

"Professor Starwyn," Vance hissed, his eyes narrowing into thin slits. "This tribunal is closed to uninvited faculty."

"Not when the prosecution is relying on fabricated timelines and suppressed evidence," Starwyn snapped, pulling a thick roll of parchment from her sleeve and slapping it onto the edge of the Headmaster’s desk. "I am invoking Section Twelve of the Academic Charter. As the legal proxy and academic advisor to these two apprentices, I formally object to these proceedings."

Vance stared down at the parchment, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "Section Twelve applies only in cases of demonstrable administrative error. There is no error here. The evidence of their guilt is standing right over there." He pointed a trembling finger at the catatonic Veyron.

"The evidence is circumstantial at best, and maliciously doctored at worst," Starwyn countered, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "Furthermore, under Section Twelve, a formal defense requires a mandated three-day trial window to collect and present counter-evidence. Denying them this window is a direct violation of academy charter."

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the grand hall. The senior faculty members flanking Vance began to murmur anxiously among themselves, leaning in to whisper warnings into the Headmaster’s ear. Vance glared down at Starwyn, his eyes flashing with suppressed rage, clearly weighing the political cost of openly violating charter law against the convenience of a summary execution of justice.

"Three days," Vance finally rasped, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "You have exactly seventy-two hours, Professor Starwyn. Seventy-two hours to produce a miracle, because the moment the clock strikes the fourth day, this tribunal will reconvene, and no charter in the world will save them."

"That's all we need," Thalen said quietly, his hand finding Zeyric’s in the shadows of their cloaks, their fingers locking together with a steady, unbreakable grip.

"Take them to the restricted holding cells," Vance barked, standing up with a violent sweep of his heavy robes. "And place ward-hounds on their perimeter. Make sure they don't take another step off academy grounds."

The guards lunged forward, grabbing their arms and hauling them backward toward the side doors. But as they were dragged out of the hall, Thalen didn't look down in defeat. He locked his gaze straight onto Vance, his eyes burning with a fierce, quiet promise.

They had seventy-two hours. And Vance had no idea what kind of storm he had just invited inside his walls.

Chapter 45: Panic Room"The hinge is finally shifting, but so is the entire foundation," Zeyric hissed, his boots sliding another inch across the grit-covered floor as the heavy iron grate shrieked against centuries of accumulated grime. "If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight

Chapter 44: Cages of the Past"If that iron gives way another inch, we’re going to drop straight into the foundation’s main sewer line," Zeyric whispered, his boots slipping against the damp, dust-caked flagstones as he threw his upper body weight behind the rusted poker. "And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai

Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck.""My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering.""It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstone

Chapter 42: The Thesis Assignment"Stop moving before you tear your stitches," Thalen said, though his own right hand instinctively rose to press against his bandaged ribs as a sympathetic twinge flared through the bond."I'm not moving, I'm adjusting," Zeyric shot back, his dark eyes flashing with stubborn defiance as he propped himself higher on his elbow. "And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. He let his hand slide upward, intertwining his fingers

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 41: A New Normal

Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. He propped himself up on one elbow, ignoring his own

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 40: Permanent Ink

Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
