Chapter 32: The Accusation

"If you miss a single page of the ledger when you throw them, I am legally allowed to push you into the path of Malakor’s guard dogs," Zeyric muttered, his knuckles whitening around the heavy leather pouch as they marched up the gravel path toward the grand stone steps of the academy courtyard.

"I have practiced throwing heavy objects at arrogant peasants for years, Zeyric; do try to maintain some faith in my aristocratic upbringing," Thalen whispered back, his jaw tight as the massive iron gates creaked shut behind them, sealing off any possibility of a tactical retreat.

The morning mist clung to the polished marble pillars of the portico like a damp shroud, muttering with the nervous murmurs of a hundred student apprentices and faculty members who had been unceremoniously herded into the courtyard by Headmaster Vance’s dawn decree.

At the top of the steps, flanked by four towering enforcers in full plate armor, Vice-Headmaster Malakor stood with his hands folded neatly behind his back, looking every bit the picture of bureaucratic serenity. His silver-rimmed spectacles caught the pale morning light, flashing with a cold, predatory gleam as Thalen and Zeyric came to a dead halt at the base of the staircase.

"Ah, the wandering vagrants return," Malakor called out, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent, tense expanse of the courtyard. "I see the lower slums were unable to finish what Veyron started. A disappointment, but entirely predictable."

"Save the theatrical commentary, Malakor," Thalen shouted, his voice ringing out sharp and clear over the quiet murmur of the crowd. He pulled the forged ledgers from his coat with a swift, practiced motion. "You’ve spent the better part of a decade embezzling academy funds, trading in illegal soul-harvesting reagents, and hiring street thugs to silence anyone who got too close to your little experiments!"

A collective gasp rippled through the assembled students, heads snapping back and forth between the Vice-Headmaster and the two battered, mud-spattered apprentices standing defiantly at the foot of the stairs.

Malakor’s polite smile didn't waver by a single millimeter, though the muscle in his jaw twitched just enough to betray the sudden, sharp spike of irritation beneath his polished exterior. "And I suppose these wild, treasonous accusations are backed by something more substantial than your fevered, over-caffeinated imaginations?"

"They are backed by your own signature, your own financial ledgers, and a comprehensive audit of every coin you paid to the black-market apothecary in the Sunken Market," Zeyric snapped, stepping forward so that he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Thalen. The physical proximity sent a warm, stabilizing hum through their shared soul-bond, drowning out the lingering ache in their ribs. "Try explaining these away to the high council, Malakor."

With a sharp, dismissive flick of his wrist, Thalen hurled the thick leather-bound ledgers directly up the marble steps. The heavy volumes tumbled through the air, hitting the stone floor with a resounding thud right at Malakor’s polished leather boots, scattering loose pages of itemized accounts and forged transaction receipts across the steps.

Headmaster Vance, standing several paces behind Malakor with a face carved from ancient, weathered granite, stepped forward and looked down at the scattered papers. "Malakor. Explain what this is."

For the first time, Malakor’s serene mask slipped, his eyes narrowing into cold, venomous slits as he stared down at the open ledgers. "It is forgery, Headmaster. Planted by desperate students trying to deflect attention from their own unauthorized magical tampering."

"Pick them up, Vance," Thalen demanded, his voice cutting through Malakor’s defense like a razor. "Read page forty-two. Look at the seal of the subterranean apothecary. See the exact date your esteemed Vice-Headmaster ordered the obsidian daggers used to curse Veyron!"

Vance hesitated, his gaze shifting from Thalen’s blazing eyes to Malakor’s tense, rigid posture. Slowly, the Headmaster bent down, his old joints cracking in the morning silence, and scooped up one of the heavy ledgers. He flipped open the cover, scanning the precise columns of numbers and names. The color slowly drained from Vance’s weathered face, leaving him looking remarkably old and tired.

"Malakor... these entries match the private treasury disbursements," Vance whispered, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage as he looked up. "You’ve been siphoning student life-force into the academy’s central power core for years."

"They are fabrications, Vance! Can you really be foolish enough to trust the word of two delinquents who have spent the last week hiding in the criminal gutters of the lower city?" Malakor’s voice rose, losing its calm cadence as panic finally fractured his composure. He raised his hand sharply, snapping his fingers twice in rapid succession. "Guards! Arrest these traitors immediately for vandalism and treason!"

Before the enforcers at the top of the stairs could take a single step forward, Zeyric slammed his palm against the stone courtyard floor, channeling a sharp pulse of raw, unfiltered mana straight through the cobblestones. A crackling wall of white-hot energy erupted around the base of the stairs, sending the armored guards stumbling backward with shocked shouts.

"You're out of time, Malakor!" Zeyric yelled, standing firm as the magic hummed through his veins, perfectly balanced by Thalen’s steady, precise control beside him. "The whole academy knows what you are!"

Malakor’s face twisted into an ugly, mask-like snarl of pure hatred. "If I am going down, you arrogant little parasites are coming with me!"

With a violent wrench of his arm, Malakor drew a massive, rune-etched staff from behind his cloak and slammed its base hard against the marble floor. A blinding wave of violet light exploded outward from the staff, sweeping across the courtyard and snapping shut with a deafening metallic echo that left everyone completely trapped.

Chapter 45: Panic Room"The hinge is finally shifting, but so is the entire foundation," Zeyric hissed, his boots sliding another inch across the grit-covered floor as the heavy iron grate shrieked against centuries of accumulated grime. "If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight

Chapter 44: Cages of the Past"If that iron gives way another inch, we’re going to drop straight into the foundation’s main sewer line," Zeyric whispered, his boots slipping against the damp, dust-caked flagstones as he threw his upper body weight behind the rusted poker. "And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai

Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck.""My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering.""It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstone

Chapter 42: The Thesis Assignment"Stop moving before you tear your stitches," Thalen said, though his own right hand instinctively rose to press against his bandaged ribs as a sympathetic twinge flared through the bond."I'm not moving, I'm adjusting," Zeyric shot back, his dark eyes flashing with stubborn defiance as he propped himself higher on his elbow. "And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. He let his hand slide upward, intertwining his fingers

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 41: A New Normal

Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. He propped himself up on one elbow, ignoring his own

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 40: Permanent Ink

Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
