The night was darker than ever before. Everyone in the pack was sleeping soundly, whereas Kaylynn was excited as it was her eighteenth birthday. All these years, her birthday went just like any normal day. But this year, there was something special about it. It was her eighteenth birthday. There was a high chance of finding her mate today. She sneaked out of her room as she heard the knocking at the window. She knew who it could be, Kade, her best friend since childhood. This window was her best passage to sneak out without being caught by anyone.

"Happy Birthday Kay!! Here is your gift…!!"

Kade gave her a velvety box. Inside, she found a beautiful bracelet.

"Aww, thank you, Kade. I am just glad that you never forget my birthday…"

Suddenly, she heard the sound of cheering and the lights were on. And there she saw her family singing a birthday song for her. More precisely, her dad, Felix Grant.

"Happy Birthday, Kaylynn…!! Did you think we could forget your eighteenth birthday…??" Dad came forward and hugged her while giving her a gift. When she opened it, there was a brand-new pistol along with silver bullets. Wow, Kay was so excited. Ever since Kay started practicing shooting, she wanted to have a pistol of her own. She is the best warrior they have and the future beta of the pack. Her dad knows what could make her happy.

Then it was mom's turn.

"Happy Birthday, Kaylynn…" she gave a formal hug and moved backward. Hm… Kay was used to the odd and distant behavior of her mom. Ever since she could remember, Mom loved her younger sister Ruby more than Kaylynn and always treated Kay like a free servant or a burden. Kay simply smiled at her mom. Then it was Ruby's turn.

"Happy Birthday, Kaylynn…" she said with an evil smile, then whispered,

"I bet you will meet your ugly mate tonight and get out of this pack with him soon… then I can become the next beta…" she smiled so sweetly outside that nobody could understand her evilness inside.

"Thank you, everyone…!! This was truly an amazing start to my birthday. Dad, I wish to go for a run now." Kay turned towards her dad. She knew at this hour he wouldn't permit it, but as today was her birthday, she was hoping to get some exception…!!

"Okay… But you will go along with Kade." He stated. Kay smiled and hugged him tightly with happiness. The best feeling she felt was going for a run in wolf form. Her wolf, Maya, purred inside with happiness. Kay shifted only a few months ago. The first time, it hurt like hell. But as time went by, she found herself becoming more free and happy with shifting… she wanted to enjoy the cold wind while she ran like her paws hardly touched the ground. It gave her a sense of freedom and bonding with nature.

She is the best female warrior of the Blue Moon pack. But females were not allowed to practice with male warriors as they thought females could be weak at a young age. But after eighteen, they can. Kay smiled at the thought of defeating the mighty Kade. He is the future Gamma of the pack.

"Kay, finally you got a chance to enjoy the midnight forest…!!" Kade said while they were running toward the forest.

"Yep, I was so jealous of you guys in these cases. Come on, let's change and shift…"

They went behind different trees, removed their clothing, and were shifted very soon. Kay's wolf was not as big as Kade's wolf. It was medium in size, but Kay knew that its strength and speed were immense. There were some golden streaks on her tail which attracted most of them in their pack, as nobody else had it, even her family.

They moved together deep into the forest. Maya took over completely and was celebrating her shift to the fullest. Maya was faster than Kade's wolf. They had an unsaid agreement about where to halt as Maya was way ahead of him. After reaching the shore, she stopped and waited for Kade. But that was the moment she felt that amazing scent of lemon and sandalwood, and she stood up as she could feel someone was near her. Maya wanted to go after the scent as it felt like euphoria. But that's when Kade reached there.

Maya knew they had to go back, otherwise her dad would come searching for her. They left the shore soon, but Maya was watching her surroundings thoroughly while trying to get a whiff of the amazing scent.

The next day, the future alpha, Gavin Hunter, would be back after completing a course in business management along with physical training. Even though they lived as a pack, they lived among humans. Their pack was doing a clothing business, and they were very wealthy too. After the new alpha takes over the pack and business, Kay would be the beta along with the position to assist the alpha in the business. Kay was excited that on Gavin's 21st birthday, she would be taking over her dream position in the pack. And she was planning to convince Gavin to improve the facilities and training sessions for female warriors at an early age so that they could be just as good as males in physical strength.

In the morning, Kay wore the dress she bought from her savings from doing a part-time job. She looked more beautiful in navy blue jeans along with a white shirt which halted right above her ass; it gave the perfect shape of her assets. Even though she is a little chubby, she was curvaceous. Her sister Ruby never forgot to taunt her about it as she was zero size. Kay was so used to their verbal abuse that it didn't affect her.

It was Kay and Kade's duty to pick up their future alpha. Kade drove his favorite car, which was meant to be used for the higher officials.

"Hey Kay, do you think Gavin must have changed in these three years?? I mean, he was a greedy jerk with a cunning mind. Do you think he could be a good leader??" Kade asked me.

"Hmm… Not so sure, but there must be changes, right? After all, we were all too young at that time. He must have changed…" Kay said with a sigh.

"I heard that he has never found his mate. But he should find her before taking over the position, right? That's the rule…"

"Yep, there are only a few days left. I hope he can find her soon. Then only we will get our positions as well."

"Right… Hmm… who could be that poor soul who is mated to Gavin!! God only knows… I think your sister Ruby would be perfect for him because of the sinister characters they have."

Kay smacked Kade's head playfully with a laugh, and she also thought he was right. Girls throw themselves at Gavin because of his looks and power, so it wasn't only his fault. They reached the airport sooner than they thought. And they were waiting outside. Inside Kay's mind, Maya was restless for some unknown reason...

Then Kay felt the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and butter that made her mouth water… she looked among the people and saw a muscular figure walking like a king. He was six feet tall with broad shoulders and a perfect body. His dirty blond hair was kept neatly, while his face had this manly arrogance that made her swallow hard.

Gavin Hunter!!...

As his eyes connected with hers, Maya was jumping in happiness while saying the most unexpected word, "MATE!!"

Kay saw his eyes widen as if reality struck him hard. She felt like he didn't like her. She was sad but covered it under a small smile. Soon her eyes fell on the beauty next to him, who was holding his hand like they were a couple... Maya was getting frustrated inside as she couldn't control her possessiveness toward her mate, who was holding hands with another girl.

"Oh man, I think he found his mate… Wow, she is beautiful…" Kade commented while watching them, and Kay gave him a death glare. He looked at her in confusion, then thought that she was being formal with the future alpha to welcome him properly.

They reached them in no time. Kay kept a face with no emotions but plastered a smile on it.

"Welcome back, Mr. Gavin Hunter. I am honored to welcome you on behalf of the Blue Moon pack." Kay said formally.

Then the girl next to him said,

"Who is she?? And why didn't your pack send someone more important to receive us? She looks young and unimportant. Don't they know I am also coming…"

That girl said with an ugly expression while eyeing Kay from top to toe. Kay could sense that her scent was different; there was a faint scent of something so strong… but she couldn't pinpoint it.

"Sorry, baby, I told you that I kept you as a surprise for my family and pack. If they know your importance, they would have sent at least the current beta of the pack. By the way, this is Kaylynn Grant, the future beta. And that is Kade Anderson, the future gamma. And guys, this is Amelia, your future LUNA…"

He said it so effortlessly that it made Kaylynn hurt the most. It was like he couldn't feel her as his mate at all. Even without a word of rejection, Kaylynn felt the pain of being rejected. Maya was so angry that she was ready to shift and jump on Amelia. But Kaylynn knew it wasn't worth it if her mate didn't want her. She swallowed the pain inside and cut the connection with Maya for some time, otherwise she would drive her nuts.

As Kaylynn was about to invite them into the car, she heard the annoying voice of Amelia again.

"She is your beta?? Seriously, Gavin. How can you think of a weak girl like her being a beta? It's a very important position…"

Both Kay and Kade looked at each other with an expression of "what a b*tch she is." But both of them kept quiet as they couldn't afford to say something against their future Luna.

Gavin's face showed that he wanted to say something, but he smiled and said,

"We are both tired. Let's talk after a good rest…"

After Amelia degraded her as not fit for the position of beta, Kaylynn was now bothered about her position too… Amelia came into her life only two minutes ago but already had a claim on her mate and was now even threatening her position… Kaylynn was screaming with frustration inside her head. But she smiled politely at them and welcomed them inside as their conversation never affected her. Instead of Kade, Kay took the key and preferred to drive as she wanted some distraction. But she never missed the feel of her mate looking at her often through the rearview mirror. And every time, her heart skipped a beat.

"Who does she think she is?? Kay, I hate her already… how could we tolerate such a person as our Luna… Gavin must have gone crazy… Is she truly his mate??" Kade was mind-linking Kay continuously as he was super frustrated. But Kay was in no mood for talks, so she shut him out immediately, for which Kade glared at her like "what's wrong with you?"

Kay was good with cars, so they reached back to the pack soon. As they stepped out, she heard Amelia say,

"Was she trying to kill us?? I can't believe she did that because I was just talking about her position…"

She started accusing Kay again.

Now Kay confirmed that Amelia is just a drama queen who would like to eat others' heads.

But soon she heard Kade saying,

"She is one of the best we have when it comes to racing cars. Not only that, she is the best female warrior with a great sense of scent. I think Miss Amelia is not used to this speed, that's why she was so scared…"

He said it with ease, but she could sense him mocking her inside indirectly.

"You..!!" She raised her voice at Kade, and Kay felt the urge to stand up for her friend. But Gavin interfered and said Kade was simply joking. He managed to lighten the situation and took her to the mansion.

As they were having dinner with the Alpha and Luna, Kay excused herself, but Kade followed her.

"Ever since this morning, you look complicated. What's the matter, Kay??"

"Nothing… I will tell you later… I need some time alone, please…"

As Kade could feel that something was disturbing her mind, he went away understandingly.

Kay went to the second floor, which was meant for the beta's family, and directly went to her room even after hearing Ruby asking about Gavin.

"Gavin..!! I know she had a crush on him and even dreams of being Luna… But I never dreamed of being Luna. My only dream was to become the best beta of this pack and serve the pack well. But I never expected Gavin to be my mate, not even in my wildest dreams.

Yes, he was a playboy back then. And I never got near him for the same reason. I know in the future, I will have to assist him. For a good relationship in the future, I kept him at bay at that time. Gavin was the most handsome one among the men in our pack. He dated almost every girl, but he never approached me. Maybe he never thought of me as beautiful…" Kay thought and sighed.

That was the moment Kay heard a knock at the window. Kay thought it must be Kade coming to check on her. But she could feel Maya again purring inside… When she opened it, there she saw Gavin instead…!!
