The ride back from the hospital was quiet. The city lights blurred against the car windows as Ethan drove, his hand gripping the wheel tighter than necessary. Brielle sat in the passenger seat, her gaze fixed outside, the weight of what had happened at the hospital still pressing on her chest. She hadn’t spoken since leaving the hospital, and the silence stretched thick between them.

When they pulled into the driveway of Ethan’s house, he parked but didn’t get out right away. Instead, he turned toward her, his gray eyes softer now, almost hesitant.

“Brielle,” he began, his voice low, “I owe you an apology. I shouldn’t have ambushed you like that. It's your place of work and I know that you worked really hard to get there. I should have been more understanding and looked for a better way to look out for you. I’m really sorry.” He apologized, his eyes holding sincerity.

She turned, surprised at the humility in his tone. He looked different from the man who had stormed into the hospital

They all gathered in the living room, all eyes on Jessica who was sitting stiffly on the couch, her eyes fixed like daggers on Brielle, who stood by the armrest with her arms folded across her chest.Brielle met the glare but didn’t flinch. Jessica had been acting strangely ever since returning from the hospital, her voice shrill, her demeanor theatrical.Brielle wasn’t buying it. Not in the slightest.Vivian, looked between them with confusion. She smoothed the fabric of her simple but elegant blouse and finally spoke. “Jessica, what is the matter? You have been acting weirdly since you came in. Is it the injury? Your head? That must be it.” Her gaze softened with maternal worry. “Did the doctors say you suffered a concussion?”Her eyes shifted to the small white bandage on Jessica’s forehead.Ethan, who had been silent until now, leaned back in his seat, exhaling. “She hit her head earlier,” he explained. “I took her to the hospital and she got treated. According to Dr Lorey, it was

Brielle came down the stairs quietly, her eyes holding a light that had been missing all day. She hurried to where he sat and smiled.“The results are ready,” she said excitedly, a wide smile stretched on her face.Ethan’s breath rushed out in a long sigh. His shoulders, which had been tense all day, loosened. At last. The end of Jessica’s charade was finally in sight. He ran a hand through his hair and allowed himself the smallest of smiles.“This is it,” he muttered. “Finally… an end to all of this.”He reached for his phone immediately, his first thought being of his mother. Vivian had carried the burden of shame and worry alongside him, and she deserved to know first. His thumb hovered over her number, but before he could dial, the device buzzed in his palm. Vivian’s name lit up the screen.“Perfect timing,” Ethan murmured before answering.“Ethan,” Vivian’s firm, commanding voice came through, “I am on my way to your house. I will call Jessica after this to join us. She needs to

Jessica pushed herself upright on the hospital bed, ignoring the dull throb in her head. The faint smell of antiseptic clung to the room, and the steady beeping of a nearby machine reminded her that she was still a patient. She winced as she moved, her body still aching from the fall. Her reflection in the small mirror above the sink showed a pale face, tired eyes, and a bandage wrapped tightly around her small head. She couldn’t stand lying in bed any longer. The whispers outside her door, the sympathetic glances from nurses. Everything annoyed her. She needed to know when she could leave. She couldn’t be bedridden when her life was falling apart.Jessica slipped her feet into her slippers and walked out into the hallway. The cool floor sent a shiver through her as she spotted a nurse coming toward her with a clipboard.“Excuse me,” Jessica said, her tone polite but firm, “can you tell me who’s the doctor in charge of my recovery?”The nurse stopped, glanced at her chart, then nodded

An hour later, Bella entered the hospital building her feet moving quickly as she hurried down the corridor, clutching a small transparent zip bag in her hand. Inside, neatly sealed, was a strand of Ethan’s hair. She knocked once on Dr. Lorey’s office door and slipped inside.Dr. Lorey looked up from her desk, brows lifting. “Bella? Did you get it?”Bella nodded, holding out the bag like it was a priceless treasure. “Yes, ma’am. Just like you asked.”Dr. Lorey took it carefully, her gaze staying on it a little longer than intended. She would be going against her rules by doing this but, deep down she knew it was the right thing to do. Because of the confusion surrounding the pregnancy, Brielle was living in turmoil and discomfort so, she had to do this. Not just for Brielle but for the entire Rayne family.Bella nodded quickly and left, closing the door behind her. Dr. Lorey stood, slipped on her lab coat, and walked toward the patient’s ward.Jessica was still unconscious, her pale f

Brielle and Ethan arrived at the house thirty minutes later like they had been chased from the hospital. Brielle slumped on the sofa in the living room, resting her head on the headrest.“What on earth is going on?” She complained, shaking her head as she remembered the dreadful moment.Ethan was beside her, his phone in hand as he texted Frederick, trying his best to curb the brewing crisis.Brielle sighed heavily and grabbed her phone. Sitting down wasn’t going to help them. She needed to do something. She dialed Dr. Lorey’s number, pressing the phone to her ear.“Dr. Lorey?” Brielle’s voice was low but steady. There was a brief pause before the doctor’s calm tone replied, “Brielle? Is everything alright?”“I… I need a favor,” Brielle said. She took a deep breath, her fingers twisting in the hem of her blouse.“What is the problem, my dear?” Dr Lorey said sounding worried.“It’s about Jessica’s pregnancy. It’s causing us so much unrest as you already know. I need to get this chapter

“Why can’t Jessica just stay out of our lives?” Brielle’s voice trembled with restrained anger. “It’s as if she feeds on the chaos. No matter what happens, she finds a way to crawl back in.”Ethan, who had been leaning against his desk, arms folded, watched her quietly. He had expected anger from Brielle, even bitterness. What he did not expect was the next thing that slipped out of her mouth.“I just…” she sighed, her shoulders slumping as the anger drained out of her. “I wonder how she is doing. How serious is the injury?” She asked in a worried tone, one she didn’t even expect especially since the person in question was Jessica.Ethan’s throat tightened. He was in awe of her, though he would never admit it aloud just yet. After everything Jessica had done, lying about the pregnancy, attempting to trap him, and dragging Brielle’s name through the mud, Brielle still had the heart to worry about whether Jessica was fine. That kindness, that ability to care for others even when they di
