Chapter 43

“Don’t move!”

The command snapped through the corridor, sharp and trained.

Luca kept walking.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Every step controlled despite the pain tearing through his side.

The guard adjusted his stance, finger tightening on the trigger.

“I said”

Damon moved.

Not toward Luca.

Toward the guard.

A shift.

Small.

But enough.

“Careful,” Damon said, voice low, steady. “You shoot him, you lose me.”

Silence.

Immediate.

Tight.

The guard hesitated.

Exactly one second.

That was all Luca needed.

He moved.

Fast.

Too fast for someone in his condition.

A step forward

Hand striking the weapon

Twist

Disarm

The gun clattered to the floor

The second guard lunged

Luca pivoted

Pain flared

But he didn’t stop

A precise hit

A choke

Silence slammed down again.

Both guards dropped.

Alive.

But out.

Damon didn’t waste time.

He stepped forward immediately, grabbing Luca before he could lose balance.

“You’re bleeding worse.”

Luca exhaled sharply.

“I’ve been worse.”

“That’s not reassuring.”

“It’s not supposed to be.”

Damon tightened his grip slightly.

“You’re not dying here.”

Luca met his eyes.

“…not the plan.”

Seraphine rushed forward.

Already checking the corridor.

“We don’t have time,” she said. “More will be coming.”

Damon nodded.

Then looked back at Luca.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

Luca’s lips twitched faintly.

“You weren’t leaving without me.”

Damon didn’t argue.

Because that was true.

And because

He hadn’t wanted to.

“Can you walk?” Damon asked.

Luca nodded once.

“Can you run?”

A pause.

“…we’ll find out.”

Damon almost smiled.

Almost.

They moved.

Fast.

Together this time.

No separation.

No distance.

No more being pulled apart.

“Where’s the exit?” Damon asked.

Seraphine pointed ahead.

“Service ramp. Leads to outer perimeter.”

Luca’s voice came low.

“Too obvious.”

Seraphine didn’t slow.

“Too necessary.”

Damon glanced at Luca.

“She’s right.”

Luca exhaled.

Didn’t argue.

Not this time.

Alarms still echoed.

Louder now.

Closer.

The system tightening.

Hale adjusting.

Always adjusting.

They reached the ramp

And stopped.

A single figure stood at the top.

Waiting.

Still.

Composed.

Hale.

Damon’s jaw tightened.

“Of course.”

Luca stepped slightly in front of him.

Instinct.

Protection.

Even now.

Even injured.

Hale noticed.

A faint, almost amused shift in his expression.

“You came to him,” Hale said.

Luca’s voice dropped.

“You took him.”

Hale tilted his head slightly.

“Same difference.”

Damon stepped forward.

“No.”

A beat.

“It’s not.”

Hale’s gaze flicked between them.

Taking it in.

The way they stood.

The way they moved.

Together.

Not separate.

Not controlled.

Not predictable.

That

Was new.

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be,” Hale said.

Damon huffed.

“You keep saying that.”

“And you keep proving it.”

Luca’s eyes sharpened.

“Then stop trying to control it.”

Hale’s expression didn’t change.

“That’s not how this works.”

Luca took another step forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

“It is now.”

A pause.

Longer this time.

Heavier.

Because something had shifted.

Not in the room.

In the dynamic.

Hale saw it.

Recognized it.

Didn’t like it.

“You destroyed the drive,” Hale said.

Damon nodded.

“Yes.”

“And yet you’re still here.”

Damon met his gaze.

“So are you.”

A beat.

“Which means this isn’t about the data anymore.”

Hale’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“No.”

Damon’s voice dropped.

“It’s about control.”

Silence.

Then

Hale smiled faintly.

“Finally.”

The air tightened.

This wasn’t negotiation anymore.

This was the end of it.

One way or another.

“You don’t walk out of here,” Hale said.

Not a threat.

A statement.

Damon didn’t flinch.

“Watch me.”

Hale moved first.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

Just

Decisive.

His hand slipped inside his jacket.

Weapon.

Of course.

Luca reacted instantly.

He stepped forward

Putting himself between Hale and Damon

Gun raised

Steady despite the tremor in his arm

“Don’t.”

The word came out low.

Deadly.

Final.

Everything froze.

Hale’s hand paused.

Halfway to the weapon.

His eyes locked onto Luca.

Measuring.

Calculating.

“You won’t shoot,” Hale said quietly.

Luca didn’t blink.

“Yes.”

“No,” Hale said. “You won’t.”

A beat.

“You’ve already chosen not to be that man.”

The words landed.

Precise.

Targeted.

Because Hale understood something dangerous

Luca’s change.

His restraint.

His choice.

Damon’s pulse spiked.

“Luca”

Luca didn’t look at him.

Didn’t move.

Didn’t lower the gun.

“You think I won’t?” Luca said.

Hale’s gaze didn’t waver.

“I think you don’t want to.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Because that

Was true.

And everyone in the room knew it.

Luca’s grip tightened.

Finger resting against the trigger.

Not pulling.

Not yet.

Hale’s voice lowered.

“You shoot me, you prove me right.”

A pause.

“You become exactly what you’re trying not to be.”

Damon stepped forward slightly.

“Luca.”

Not a command.

Not pressure.

Just

There.

With him.

Luca’s breathing slowed.

Focused.

Controlled.

The world narrowed.

To this moment.

This choice.

This line.

Kill

And win.

Or don’t

And risk everything.

Luca’s eyes didn’t leave Hale.

“…you’re wrong.”

Hale tilted his head slightly.

“Am I?”

Luca’s voice dropped.

Quiet.

Certain.

“I don’t need to kill you.”

A beat.

“To end this.”

And then

He lowered the gun.

Just slightly.

Not surrender.

Not weakness.

Choice.

Damon exhaled.

Slow.

Relief mixing with tension.

Because this wasn’t over.

Not yet.

Hale watched.

Studied.

Then

Smiled.

But this time

It wasn’t controlled.

It wasn’t calm.

It was something else.

Something sharper.

More dangerous.

“Then you’ve already lost,” Hale said.

Behind them

Multiple weapons clicked into place.

Luca didn’t turn.

But he knew.

They were surrounded.
